Hey, simple question...
Can mame run Hydro-Thunder? For that matter, can MAME run any newer arcade games such as Hydro-Thunder or San Francisco Rush??
-
I doubt it. The developers tend to keep a respectful distance from games that are still making money in the arcade. There is also an issue of the amount of processing power needed to emulate newer games. There are games in MAME already that won't run smoothly without a 4 gigahertz CPU.

I curious how the MAME developers determine which arcade games are "still making money". Is there some finacial data posted online somewhere (something like this site http://www.the-numbers.com (http://www.the-numbers.com), except for arcade games instead of movies)? Or do they just visit the local arcades to see what's there. There are some games in the two arcades in my area that have been "MAMEd", however those games may only make money for the arcade owner, and not the developer of the game.
The reason I ask is that I noticed there more recent games (such as "Gunbird 2"; released 1998) in MAME than "San Francisco Rush" (released 1996). Obviously "Gunbird 2" isn't bringing in the same money that "San Francisco Rush" is. I'm just curious as to how they know that. Anyone know?

Maybe...
Is Gunbird 2 3D, or is it 2D??
Perhaps the developers of MAME simply want to keep the emulation to classic-style 2D games?

No the mame devs don't continue with the purpose of making ANY game playable. It's a documentation project, the fact that some games become playable is a nice side effect for us. Mame devs are only interested in accurate emulation, not fast emulation. The only way 3d games could be rendered fast enough would be with untrue pc hardware acceleration. All 3d rendering for mame is done in software mode to ensure accuracy. For legal reasons and as a matter of respect towards the manufacturer's that make the games they keep out newer games.
All is this is in the mame faq over at mame.net.... I suggest you go read it.
