Hey guys, I have a bit of a frustrating problem. >:D
I have an older gaming rig computer that I have had for about 10 years now. I got a pretty nasty virus on the machine and it never really worked quite the same (duh) after that. But one thing that really got me confused was the shut down. Basically when I go to start>shutdown the computer will shutdown the operating system but the towers fans and powersupply (again duh) stay running. It's more of an annoyance at this point but I couldn't get the whole system to shut down. I have tried google searching remedies but the responses are all over the place. I just wanted to check with you fine folks since I trust you guys.
So I reinstalled the bios to the motherboard
I did a fresh install of windows 7
And I checked my power settings and still the damn thing doesn't shut off.
I guess I don't mind it too much but I usually use a "smart strip" power strip to power everything up at one time. But now that my computer tower is constantly running it really makes the strip useless.
Is this just a case of a bad motherboard? Or something that could be fixed?
Any help would be appreciated.

Does the CPU fan stay running as well? If you UNPLUG the tower, then plug it back in, do the fans still move? What about when you hold down the power button? Also, what motherboard is it?

yes the CPU fan stays running.
If I unplug the tower and plug it back in all the fans and such turn on. The actual computer doesn't boot until I hit the tower power button.
If I hold down the power button the computer shuts down.. Just not the tower nor the fans. those stay running.
mobo is an asrock 775 dual 880pro

thanks for responding btw. :notworthy:

You reinstalled the BIOS, but did you look at the settings? It sure sounds like a setting in the BIOS to me. Might run malwarebytes just to be safe.

I will confirm that this behavior on this particular MOBO (I have 3 of them) I considered normal if you have installed Win7, Win8 , Win 10. This is the one thing I noticed once I installed WIN7, WIN8,WIn8,1,WIN10. Windows XP however works with no problem.
So your MOBO is NORMAL. I have not seen a BOIS update and probably won't bother with it anymore.

Nah, wouldn't be malware. If he is unplugging it and the fans go back on when he plugs it back in, then that's a hardware issue. Possibly an add-on card? Have you tried unplugging all PCI/AGP/PCI-E etc cards, unplug EVERYTHING and anything that is connected. And then plug it back in and see if it still turns on the fans. Honestly though, it sounds like the board is bad. Best and about the only remedy is swap out the power supply with one that has an on/off switch in the back, and just flip it into the off position when not using it. And another thing to try... speaking of power supplies, is to disconnect the main leads going to the mother board, and then plug it back in and see if those fans spin without a signal from the motherboard.

So the board is an ASROCK 775Dual-880Pro?
Ya know... I recall having a similar problem with an ASRock board on a system I built for someone a couple years ago.. It turned out that what I needed to do, was change the jumper position on the board.
This would have been PS2_USB_PWR1 you'll find it in the upper left corner of the motherboard, or PAGE 12 of the manual shows this if your not seeing what I am talking about
http://66.226.78.22/downloadsite/Manual/775Dual-880Pro.pdf (http://66.226.78.22/downloadsite/Manual/775Dual-880Pro.pdf)
Try switching that and see if it fixes the problem.

I'll give a test to see if it is that ps2_usb pwr1 jumper.
-
confirm that the ps2_usb pwr1 jumper did the truck (defaulted to USB). Now switch to ps2 and system do shutdown (still have the original manual but of course did not bother checking when XP was removed.)
good call, good memory.
wasted 4 minutes booting up the sytem with Win 10 :banghead:

Well this problem did start when I had windows xp. But I think it's just a mobo issue.

Yeah, I have not tried this.... I will try it out see what it does. I assume it's a bad mobo. But it would be a good test to see if it could be something else. Thanks!

Try my jumper suggestion first.

Will do!

Do I just unplug the ps2 jumper? Or switch it to something else?
-
Just switch it.
-
switched the jumper to the other position and It still is doing the same thing.
-
there are 3 pins. defaulted to pins 2-3 (USB). Pull up the plastic plug and put it in pins 1-2 (PS2).

Yeah thanks... I know what he was saying.. It just didn't work for me. :dunno
I mean I am sure I could rig something so It wouldn't be a pain in the but to turn on in an arcade. Or maybe I just spring for an updated mobo.
