Today I had a crash in GroovyMAME while I was playing Progear.
Here's a screen I captured:

Basically what happened is that the game got stuck at the first boss and the screen and audio remained still for ~10 seconds, then the screen turned black as if no signal was send but the game continued playing because I could hear the music going. So I close MAME and the screen I posted is what I got, along with garbage on screen behind the window.
RAM is ok, tested with MemTest86. Same with the hard disk, which I tested with Seagate SeaTools to see if there were broken sectors. I then low level formatted it and installed everything which went smooth.

I've experienced similar issues when the video card is not properly secured to the motherboard, and the cabinet is treated roughly. The problem is not with ram, but with the pci slot being loose. IMHO formatting a hard drive is a huge waste of time 99% of times.

Thanks, I'll make sure it's properly secured!
EDIT: while we're at it... how did you secure your video card in your system? I guess it's not in a case so no screws to keep it nice and stable there.
-
Personally what i did is cut the motherboard frame out of a case and secured that to the game mounting board, and mounted the mobo etc into that area..
-
that sounds like a lot of work! I suppose you used a dremel (or somthing similar) to cut out the base of the case.
I'm actually using just a wood table but I have no clue on how to fix the graphic card in place.
-
No i just used tin snips... the metal isn't really all that hard to cut..

My GFX card is one with a clip at the back that secures it in place. Then I just used a cable tie to secure it at the front.

I'm not 100% sure I understood how you secured it at the front. Can you take a picture of it?

Sure. I have the cable tie looped around one of the plastic board mounts.

That's a clever solution!!! Thanks for the pic, I'll do the same with my setup! :D

No problem. Just don't do the cable tie up too tight, or it'll tend to pull the GFX card out of the clip at the back.
