So my XP 64 raid setup has just died for the last time, it was risky but stable so I never messed with it.
So I just ordered a Radeon 4890 and installed a 120GB SSD in my Neo Geo Mame Cab.
I have all the roms and emulators on a 750GB SATA HD.
This is an older Asus mobo 2G ram and a older dual core Athlon X2 but it should be ok. I dont play blitz or anything. Mostly Robotron 2084, TMNT, Sunset Riders and the classics.
Anything to watch out for with GM and Win7 and/or Atom 15 and Radeon 4980 in general.
Just wanted to put it out there and see if anyone had anything in particular to note.
Thank you.

Also I'd like to stick with Hyperspin for the FE but I do understand there is a hard limit for modelines, has this been solved?
TY/!

Yeah, I'm a big fan of using ATOMs, but I don't think Hyperspin is going to work for you, based on experience.

I use a similar setup for HyperSpin (Athlon 4800+/Asus mobo). Works fine under XP. Not sure I would venture to install W7 64-bit on it though because performance will crawl. Not sure I would want to either given that resolutions are more flexible under XP than W7. If you need 64-bit, get XP 64-bit. I found a site (getintopc) that has an ISO. Since I don't need it secure and it is only used for MAME use, I just slipstream SP2, WMP11, .net 2-4, then install it on my machine. The 4890 card on that system though is overkill for the games that can run on that system. Also, considering the 4890 requires a 500w PSU and likely your existing salvaged PC didn't already have one. I would save the 4890 for when the next machine crashes and you repurpose it for arcade use.
Modelines thing is not solved, but you can work around it as detailed here: http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=379#p379 (http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=379#p379)

I've got 2 machines set up with Win 7 x64, both run hyperspin fine. (when you limit the number of modelines, which isn't an issue..)
HD 4850 in 1, HD4350 in the other.
Only issue i can see is the video card is way over powered, and will generate a LOT of heat into the cabinet, so make sure it has LOTS of ventilation!!

The issue with the number of modelines is actually a bug in HS, and it won't probably get fixed.
Another problem with the HD 48xx cards and W7, is that they're plagued with monitor detection issues, so most users end up adding resistors to the RGB lines of the VGA cable in order to workaround this. The HD 4350, on the other hand, seems easier to get going, provided you use the DVI-I output all the time.

I run Hyperspin on W7 64bit with a 4890 and I don't think I've encountered either of these problems unless I'm missing something?
EDIT: Nevermind, I use super resolutions.

TY for the feedback. I slipstreamed SP2 into XP 64bit, thank you for the site.
Which .net installer did you download for .net 3 and .net 4?
Ok I like Attract Mode for a front end, what is everyone else using other than HyperSpin. I feel like years of my life have went into setting up and tweaking Hyperspin.
Based on comments here I am going to take my old media center system with a better AMD X2 and better PSU to use for my Arcade Cab. This Asus Mobo will become the new OpenMediaVault NAS.

So here is the weird thing that I encountered when installing HyperSpin on my XP 64-bit machine. I figured that .net 4 would be all I needed. So I installed that, forgoing the installation of .net 2 & 3.5. Well, RocketLauncher clunks out if you don't have .net 2 installed (wtf?). And once you install .net 4, you can't install .net 2. You have to remove .net 4, then reinstall them all in sequence. Also, I installed the version of .net 2 that comes with the official AMD driver for my 4890 card (it is in packages folder of your driver files). I got .net 3.5 & 4 by using Windows Update Download (WUD). Of course, I don't install the official AMD drivers and install Calamity's.
One other problem was HyperSync hangs when it is validating which version of WMP11 you have installed on your PC. I worked around this by just copying whatever media folder I had on a W7 machine I have going. Perhaps you won't have this problem if you have all the media downloaded from a previous install and can do the same.
You might run into a problem with an error message installing .net with that ISO: "Windows Installer Service cannot be accessed." That is easily fixed with these regsvr commands:
Run %windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /unregister
Run %windir%\syswow64\msiexec.exe /unregister
Run %windir%\system32\msiexec.exe /regserver
Run %windir%\syswow64\msiexec.exe /regserver
Restart the computer
And use WinToFlash to load XP 64-bit on a USB stick to make the install faster (selection option 1 upon first bootup to usb, then option 2). You should be fine from there.

Lucky! What monitor are you using?

Is it only the 48xx series? 47xx series and lower are ok? And is this only a W7 issue, will I encounter this issue in XP or XP 64-bit?

Well I can't say it for sure because I only use entry level gpus for my experiments, so I'm basing on other users experiences. The problem seems to affect cards with two DVI outputs instead of DVI and VGA. But specifically when the connection method is either a JPAC or a direct VGA->arcade-rgb cable (instead of VGA->VGA). This is because in either those cases the rgb lines are not loaded with 75 ohm and thus the video card can't sense the monitor. On the other hand, VGA->SCART TV or arcade monitors with a native VGA connector seem to have the proper impedance in the rgb lines and cause no problems. And those entry level video cards with both VGA and DVI outputs all of them seem to output video by default through the only one DVI output even when no monitor is detected so they're easier to deal with. Regarding W7 I guess the problem is not the os but the driver versions we're using for this os that are more picky regarding detection than the ones used in XP.

Andy sells a video amp that I use, I wonder if it has any impedance on it

You mention is is a W7 related problem (I think?). I actually see this in XP 64-bit. I have a 4350 on the way. I'll test the two and post a separate report post. Just picked up 4 cabs I have get up and running. Best to work through these problems now.

Ok thank you everyone for the feedback.
Operation raid dump was successful and I was able to clone the RAID0 array to a single SATA drive. Got XP64 booting again and I am going to Atom15 the 4890 when it gets here.
I do run VP and Pinball Arcade so it will be nice for that to run liquid smooth.
Power supply and case fans/ cooling has been upgraded.
I have a 120gb SSD but everyone is stating that Xp64 won't jive well and I haven't really tried. I could clone from my single SATA drive (C) partition to the SSD just to see how it performs for fun.. Of course fun time for me is usually at 1:30am when everyone else is asleep.
Groovy Arcade probably would like the 32gb SSD I just got on sale.
Still need to think about creating a 25khz only rom enabled Groovy Arcade USB so that I can run my Nanano arcade crt in 25k and play Tapper, 720, Crackdown, maybe even Daytona USA in native res

the SSD will 'work' fine with Xp64, just won't support automatic TRIM functions etc...
-
If using an SSD and XP, typical computing tasks will ruin the life of your drive because XP doesn't support data write. But you should be fine since you are using these drives for a singular purpose and the data on them will remain static once done.

Flashed the 4890 in-between baby naptime and turkey day adult naptime.
Now it's on to uninstall arcade VGA drivers and install CRT emu 9.3 in winxp 64.

Flashed the 4890 and weird thing is the boot up screens show up still out of sync on the arcade monitor, they don't show up on a PC monitor..
Maybe I made a mistake, I followed the documentation perfectly, which was very good btw!

Did you set it to 15 only?
-
Yeah I had hoped to have both 15 and 25 so that I could boot with GA and play medium res games native but it makes the card boot out of range for 15k
Reflashed only with 15k and it works perfectly.. Limited to 100 modes and HS runs great.
What a big improvement over the arcade vga's 30 modes.
I am loving the 320x224 goodness for TMNT and others at that native resolution. The games look amazing and fit on my monitor even better than before. I'm stunned at the difference even though I'm the only one here who will ever notice. TY Calamity and all other brothers in cade here
