So my cab uses a 27" Toshiba tube TV, it is hooked up via component video fed by an ati x1800xl all in wonder card. Using xp64, and resolution set too 800x600. Is this the best method, or is there a better setting? I thought the TV would be better for the old school look than LCD, and am happy with it but was just wondering if it can be fine tuned.

Do you mean component or composite? Component has 3 plugs (Red Green Blue - RGB). Composite has one plug (yellow). I took a peek at the card you have and it looks like S-Video in the center.

the card i found for his had a special connector that allows composite or component hook ups. depending on which adapter you use.

If using a TV, component will be the best

Its hooked up via component (red,green,blue cables), the card does have hook ups for s-video and component. I was just curious if I should be running at a certain resolution for games? Its currently set at 800x600, should I be running 640x480 since its closer to the original res?

I think getting some cheap crt tvs is in order soon.

for a TV with component out you should be running at 480i.
it's basically the native res for an SD tube TV.

I ran a tv over s-video for years on both my main setup and my racing cab.
It looked much better at the highest resolution the tv could handle IMO. (IIRC, I had it up to 1024x768)
Much easier to read the gamelists in the front end and such at the higher resolution.
It looked best over component, but I was using Act Labs S-vid guns, so stuck with s-vid.

Yes and no. The native res for 480i (4:3) is 640x480. However, native resolutions for some devices is higher and then after horizontal scaling becomes 480i. The best example of this is if you connect a standard DVD player to a Component TV input: The native DVD resolution is 720 x 480 but when you run it through the TV it scales it down to 640x 480.

The ntsc scaling is what ends up driving you nuts IMO and makes for getting a arcade crt the most sane option..

You were scaling your 1024x768 down to 640x480.
No video card made outputs higher than that over svideo.

I try not to think about that and just use the standard resolutions the video card wants to output to the TV. :)
