Title: Extra set of wires below JAMMA?
Post by: escapepodgames on October 15, 2015, 10:54:10 am
Hi, Guys

I am working on a cabinet that was such a wiring mess that I am redoing the whole thing with a new JAMMA board and buttons, sticks etc.

I am VERY new to this and very much a Newb.

JDFan was nice enough to provide me with a map of all the hook-ups which I am fairly confident I can install and wire, however I have a bundle of 5 wires that run into a connector just below where the JAMMA board goes (see pic)

Looks like at least a couple of them run up to my buttons but I am not sure why this is here because isn't it all supposed to go straight into the JAMMA?

I have a 6-button/player set up BTW.  Perhaps the sixth button required this layout?

Any help I can get is much appreciated because I want to unhook everything while I wait for the new hardware to arrive but I am being cautious and don't want to get myself in trouble.

Also, while I have your attention, could someone please let me know what exactly the JAMMA plugs into?  I know WHERE it goes, just not if this is the PC motherboard etc.  Like I said, I know nothing about this but I am happy to learn everything as I go forward in my new hobby.

Thanks in advance!  -Steve

It's probably a kick harness.  JAMMA natively  only supports three buttons per player, and can be modified to 4 using unused pins.

If a cab had 6 buttons back in the day they would have an extra harness to connect to the board, separate from the JAMMA connection.

Makes sense.  So if the JAMMA I'm getting has connections for 5 buttons I should just use this kick harness for the 6th?

Thanks!

+1.  It's a kick harness.

There a pretty good explanation of it here:

I was confused in your other thread and I still am.  What are you running in this cabinet?  Mame and a PC with a JPAC or some kind of Jamma multi board?

This is a cabinet I bought from the local arcade game guy about three years ago.  Sold it to the local comic book shop and then got it back from them when they needed their space back.

I'm just trying to get it working again and giving it a complete renovation (new graphics, components, etc) so that I can sell it around the holidays.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what type of build it is, etc.  I know that it is very sloppy and I'm trying to rectify that using my basic understanding of wiring etc and a LOT of help from this forum :)

I am planning to make this into a hobby and and build a low-profile cabinet of my own from the ground up.  I am in the sign industry and have access to all kinds of CNC and graphics equipment.  At that point I plan to put more time into watching videos etc to truly learn what I'm doing and not have to bug you guys as much.

In the meantime please bear with my extreme Newbness and ignorance as I limp my way to getting these controls to work and get this thing out of my garage, lol

Everyone has been awesome so far!
