Title: Happ trackball with ipac-2
Post by: gigido on October 08, 2015, 01:07:49 am
Hi,
I've found some pages on what wires go where when connecting a Happ trackball to an ipac-2 controller, however the one I have doesnt seem to have the same color wires. I was wondering if anyone else has had experience connecting trackballs with the ipac? I was trying to figure out if I cut the end of the USB and splice that to the ipac?

here is the trackball I purchased. TB-ILLBLUE-3-USB  http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=810 (http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=810)

I've heard mix things about the ipac 2 having trackball support, but the one I have says it supports it.

thanks!

i know ultimarcs trackball is compatable with the i-pac, not sure about happ though.

why don't you just plug it directly into the pc via usb?

I originally did that, but am having issues using the trackball with Golden Tee Golf. From what I could find online, it looked like people said to plug it directly into a controller.

one of the other guys with a bit more know how will chime in but to me it sounds like you need to plug the usb directly into the pc, (don't cut it off) and then go into mame settings and enable mouse input.

I did get the trackball to work with the USB connected to the pc, but the problem was whenever I swung, the game didn't register the power of my swing correctly. I read that the USB has trouble register all that movement?

that's a tad unusual. i don't play golden tee that often but have never had that problem.

mine is plugged via usb and works fine, perhaps its your mame settings that's the problem.
hAVE YOU TRIED A Different trackball game in mame? do you have issues with any other games(trackball)

That is a problem with the Happ USB trackball interface as it uses only an 8-bit data packet which can max out. The Happ trackball can be wired to the I-PAC which uses a 16 bit packet and a faster poll rate which wont max out.

Good to know. Would you have any experience wiring the Happ trackball to the ipac? Would I unplug the usb connector and connect a new harness in its spot to the ipac?

The newer model ipac 2 for 2015 has header pins for a spinner or trackball. I have a betson trackball wired into one of these and it works great.

As I recall the USB interface on the Happ trackball is build onto one of the axis boards. This means its going to need some hacking to be able to connect the output of the optical sensor to the outside. I cant say exactly without a board in front of me and I dont have one here.
