Ha HA! I just did two big cap kits in Chuftember. Glad I'm out of those woods.

Oh you meant meat that you eat.

I will be making a custom meat smoker cart.

Helped my friend turn a 4 drawer file cabinet into a smoker.
It's pretty cool.  Burner and chips in bottom drawer, water tray in 2nd drawer, meat in top two drawers.

Sorry, didn't get any pics.
It's a bit underpowered(by a single burner campstove), so it's probably useless since the weather got colder.

Hopefully I'll get something done this weekend to be chuffed about.
I gots to now, so I can have something to post!

I thought cold smoking was when Willie Nelson and/or Snoop Dogg invites you on their tour bus on a cold winter evening.

I started a little cocktail cab 2 years ago. I finished it the other day, and it promptly sold for $350. I was happy to reclaim the real estate.

Looks great guys!

I didn't really do anything Halloweeny this year, too busy and I feel too bad... I put up the bare minimum of decorations and the graveyard.... no tricks or fog machines or anything.  :(

I did sort out some electrical issues with the Camaro..... now if I can only get the frikkin speedometer fixed.  I also thought of a solution to the broken connector tab (for the rear defrost) on my back strut as well.... I still have the old set so I'll just de-solder the tab from the old one and put it on the new one.

That looks legit, but if you wanted portability why didn't you go with propane? (don't get me wrong, I prefer electric smokers)

Title: Re: Chufftober '15!
Post by: Vigo on October 13, 2015, 10:34:26 am
Thanks! A couple things. Half the reason I wanted it on a cart was to simply get it further off the ground. Made more sense to do a cart, especially since I had an old grill rotting next to my house and begging for me to use it's base. I also just went with electric because I am too new to smoking to trust my instincts with propane. Electric seems more foolproof. I bought one of those 12 hour pellet maze trays, so I don't even need to bother filling the wood chip loader for long smokes.

So far, I am pretty happy with my results.

Dunno what it is, but I like that show.
Showing someone sitting next to the cooker all night, drinking a beer and pissing around on their phone resonates with me.
Much better than those cooking shows where it's just someone dumping premeasured ingredients into a bowl, then showing the final product.

My local PBS just started airing Steve Reichlen's back catalog of shows rapid-fire, but I just can't seem to get into them.
They all have different names, but use identical formats down to the sets.

I still don't know how that guy managed to become the face of BBQ but more power to him.  Either he or the dude he's got a blood feud with when he stole all the recipes was working at a place in Bryan, TX years ago and word was getting around about this awesome BBQ coming out of this dump on the edge of town.

So I ride there once and what was the special....

Fried catfish.

Still get a chuckle out of that blown opportunity.  This state has gone full retard on "it's not any good if you don't stand in line for an hour" which is a trend I won't indulge.

Was not aware of a feud.  Googled it.
Most stories were hard to follow.
This song was the best summary I found:
http://brisketman.com/the-tale-of-franklin-mueller-lewis/ (http://brisketman.com/the-tale-of-franklin-mueller-lewis/)

It seems John Lewis has moved shop to Charleston, SC.
I might just have to ride the scooter down there this spring.

Yeah, that song sums it up pretty well.  I think it was cocaine and not booze, though.  It's always cocaine.  San Antonio had a good place where the cokehead dropped dead and his cokehead brother took it over.  Eventually the Chinese people across the street bought it and kept all the cooks.  God bless the weird diversity a visit to that place entailed.

One of my biggest regrets in my time there was not deigning to eat "strip mall BBQ" until right before I moved.  It was $42 for sausage, chicken, brisket, beans, etc and it'd take us a week to eat it.  Or you could stupidly pay $15 a plate for something you could finish in 10 minutes.

I don't really think a restaurant can turn out good BBQ at a price people are truly willing to pay.

Chuffed to be making progress on remodeling my bathroom.  Got most of the reframing and electrical done.  An old galvanized vent needs moved before I can frame for built in shelves.
Still need to install a new exhaust fan and vent in the roof which I'm not looking forward to.  I hate working in the attic.

I'm a bit pissed at myself for using unrelated structural issues as an excuse to put this off.
I could have had this done two months ago.

El Nino... lol.  The 2000 El Nino meant we didn't have a single day below 32 degrees in Billings the entire year.  Last year was somewhat mild, but the two years before had record snowfall and dozens of days below -30F.  We haven't had our first frost yet this year.  I am not sad about it.. I am sick of fighting 2 feet of snow on the roads and having 140+ inches of snowfall throughout the year.  Here's to a green Christmas!

Fun fact:  The old Teddy Ruxpin dolls use one track for audio and another to control the movements.  Put in a Garth Brooks cassette and for whatever reason it'll sync up and the lips will move.

(Yes that's the kind of stuff I did when I was a kid.)

That duck creeped me right the ---fudgesicle--- out.

I also had a flood, and the water all ran directly to the only carpet I have in the house. I caught it quick and saved the day however. Lots of heaters and fans blowing. Hoping to save the carpet... hoping. It's a small piece so not a huge deal if I have to replace but it was very nice red plush carpet.

water flooding from places it shouldn't in a house is one of my nightmares.. Of course, I lived it a couple months ago when a pipe broke in my ceiling in my bathroom... I have that nightmare in one form or another about once a month.  It usually involves a leak in a basement that is coming from somewhere up above that I can't identify that is actually destroying the entire house even though I only see a little damage in one spot.  The last one had me waking up in a sweat and I was all out of sorts for the whole day.  At least Jim's is a rental.. when that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- happens to your home you invested pretty much all your money and time from the past 20 years in, it gets a little more stressful.  It's not even the cost of the repairs, it's having spent hundreds of hours doing drywall work (that you hated doing) and watching it all get ruined in a matter of minutes.  While I could probably afford to pay someone to do it all over again, in this town the good mud guys are booked 12 months in advance...  I can't tolerate paying someone to do something and ending up with a result that is worse than I would have done.  It's all the stuff nightmares are made from...

Nothing like crashing a football game.  And standing in the rain.  But, hey, university of houston is 9-0 so damn.

Before hand, I got into some alumni event (I am not alumni) and was told "it's $10 for unlimited bbq and all the craft beer you can drink."  My response?  "I'll take two!" and paid for the dude behind me.  Still probably the best deal in my life.

Chuffed to have interior doors again.  It will be an exciting week of filling in nail holes and touching up the paint.  Seems like a small job until you realize how much friggin trim there is when doing an entire house.  Or maybe I'm just sick of painting said doors and trim (and baseboard trim).

My wife asked me to paint our bathroom, and considering we've lived here 19 years and have never painted it, I was happy to oblige (oh noes I better get my balls out of her purse....).

Free rusted tool stand found in the alley plus a router table I got for half price at a thrift store for six bucks. Some sanding, primer and, painting, and voila! She's good to go! #CodeNameOperationPBJLives

. . . and we are truly grateful for that minor miracle.   ;D

First, convert your router into a table router.

Chuffed to get this tv stand built & painted quickly.  Gonna make some wedges so the speakers angle up a bit.  TV is still crooked.   ;D

Looks good!  What kind of materials/paint did you use because I need to do something similar.

Well, the thing that makes it look better than my usual work is the legs which are from an old set of end tables.
They originally attached to a metal frame from the top, so the sides were free from any holes or markings.
They are tapered on two sides (tapers originally facing in on the end tables).

Other than that, it's just a sheet of furniture grade oak plywood and $7 worth of moulding to cover the edges of the plywood.
I had the guy at the store rip two 14" strips out of the sheet long ways.  The larger leftover piece was then cut for the top.  I usually use birch or maple plywood, but my floor are red oak and the interior doors I installed have a (fake) red oak grain pattern on them, so I figured I'd give it a try.  Everything but the floor is painted, so it's not going to look like a cabin.
The stand is 21.75" tall and 5ft long.  No other scrap wood I had laying around was used.  One sheet (in addition to the legs and trim) was enough with a little bit to spare.

It was assembled using a kreg jig and kreg screws.  This is one of those tools I wish I'd bought ten years ago.
The bottom shelf is only deep enough to hold the dvd/bluray cases plus the thickness of the moulding.
The big empty area behind there gives the power strip, wall warts, & a 5 port Ethernet switch a place to live.

For the paint, I used Valspar latex enamel in Satin Black.  At Lowe's it's over by the spray paint above the canned rustoleum.
The grain still shows through when the light hits it.  Not sure if going with satin was a good choice or not.  It seems to pick up dust very easily.

I built a low shelving unit a couple years ago that I made a few mistakes on.
First, it was just under 11" deep to get an extra strip out of the sheet, but I never liked how far the plugs in the back of the stereo receiver stuck out.  14" worked out much better.
On that one I used black stain instead of paint because I wanted the woodgrain to show through.  It looked like I'd used cheap watery dollar store spray paint that wouldn't cover.  It didn't look like stain at all, just milky uneven paint.

Well it turned out really nice, or at least it looks that way from the pics.

I'm so jealous of the fact that you have a kreg jig.  I've been drooling over those for a while now.

I need to build something to display all my consoles but I'm not sure where to start.  Originally I wanted to either buy something or mimic the world of Nintendo cabinets, but I'm starting to see that they won't suit my needs.  You see I have the box to some of the consoles and I'd kind of like to display them behind the console itself.  That means the shelves need to be really deep but at the same time I want the whole thing to be open so the consoles can be seen easily.  I've got a bunch.

I have:
NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Wii u, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Sega Genesis, Sega Dreamcast and some misc stuff like a DS and a Game Gear ect.... I'd like to reserve room for expansion as well.  To make things even more complicated I don't have a lot of room.  Any piece I make really needs to be 3 feet wide or less.

well, you've got your width...and you can only go to the ceiling.

Take advantage of lowes or home depot doing free cuts.
If having multiple strips of the same width cut, make sure the guy cuts it from the bottom.
That way he doesn't have to reposition the saw and the cuts will be exactly the same.

I hear you on the Kreg. I've been making patio furniture in anticipation of hosting people for the holidays, and it's been awesome. I'm planning on building a desk/soldering-electronics workstation for our spare bedroom next.

You want to know how I know you live in the southwest....

Anyway, mother in law flying in.  Still no living or dining room, but at least the indoor wading pool is dry.  Thankfully it's a short trip.

In happier news, finally walked into a Pizza Patron the other day.  Cleaner, friendlier, and better in every way than Little Caesar's.  And they have this option:

+1 on the Kreg. I had to put a new support piece in my build to mount the vertical flatscreen. Thought about cleats. Thought about brackets. Remembered the Kreg jig. Took 2 minutes and looks clean.

Goodbye, sunken living room.  It was fun.

If the source of the leak was the foundation there may be bigger issues than a flooded living room. Did they cut out baseboards and drywall to find the source of the leak?

How many before pics does one need exactly?  I posted a damn rubber ducky floating in there.

Anyway, current theory is that the back porch slabs have shifted and now tilt towards the house rather than away from it.  When it rains, the slabs flood and pool up the water under the house.  Water pushes up around bad seals on foundation piers that were added years ago.  Well, that's putting it mildly.  It was like a water fountain gushing up during the last heavy rain.  There are also a couple hairline cracks that have water seepage.  Maintenance guy caulked up all the leaks, they glued down some plastic liner, and filled the room with cement to match the height of the other rooms.  It's a half assed repair but it'll last while we're living there.  Long term solution would involve releveling the back porch and adding gutters to divert the rain into the yard.

But, screw that.  Griping about paying full rent on a house that's been gimped for FIVE MONTHS this year was also rebuked with stony silence.

So the roof edge leading to the back porch that slopes towards the house has no gutters? Your landlord is an idiot.

But I bet you already knew that.

Correct.

Frankly, that back porch is weird.  It wasn't there originally and whoever added it didn't think it through.  The A/C drip pan also drained out on it, so the other side of the porch used to sit under half an inch of water during the summer.  I 'fixed' that by attaching a garden hose to the pipe and diverting the water into the yard.  How nobody noticed this issue five minutes after that slab was poured is beyond me.  (Would have been very easy to tie it into the hot water heater overflow pan and drain it out of the side of the house...)

I'm happy to have some resolution on the living room, though.  Another one of those, "well, it's not like you have kids...." situations where it was okay to screw me because, "that's a big house and you don't need that much space."  Your only recourse in Texas is being let out of your lease without penalty, but that means you've got to pack up and move. :P

Eh, it's an old house.  Stuff happens.  The repairs have been competent but slow in coming.  I've actually had pretty good luck with landlords over the years.

Did have one that started sending all his money to a Russian camwhore, decided to leave his wife and kids for his true love in Moscow, and showed back up a few weeks later with his tail between his legs.  7 months later some Ruskie baby appeared that his girlfriend in Russia swore was his.  Instead of simply blocking her e-mails, he continued to send checks.  His wife put up with it for awhile... but has thankfully divorced and remarried.  I wasn't personally affected by all that, but it certainly took the cake.

For whatever reason, people have treated me as a confession booth most of my life.  My parents' adage of, "if they're acting weird it's either an affair or cocaine" is right 95% of the time, so those revelations have long ceased to get a rise out of me.

More interesting sins, people.  Please.
