Anyone have experience with these cheap control kits?

Good, bad, ugly?

None personally, but I have to hear of anyone who's not tired of them after a few days. Sticks tend to lack any real feedback and buttons have a terrible propensity to stick. Controls is one of those things you don't want to skimp on, unless you are only building a cabinet for the fun of it.

the USB encoder isnt bad, but those sticks and buttons look pretty terrible. I'll have to echo te sentiment above, you dont want to skimp on controls.

Seem like they are pretty good if you are craigslisting it and will never see the buyer again.

Well I'm intending to put together a small bartop using parts/left overs from other projects I already have. This would not be sold on so I'm thinking for the sake of £20 I may order a kit, use them to assembly the machine and then if they are junk just replace with better components.

I just bought one of those encoders and so far, so good.
