Title: Grayhound claw machine audio
Post by: markph on September 16, 2015, 12:04:59 am
Hi all,
just purchased an old Grayhound controlled claw machine.

Although the unit is a bit shabby looking, it operates fine.
I noticed that there is a speaker in the side of the unit but it is not connected.
I don't know if the Grayhound CPU is original to this cabinet as all 3 boards and power supply were very poorly mounted indicating that they may not be original.

Can anyone tell me if this board has sound and if it does, where is it supplied from?
I have attached images of boards.

Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

Relay Board, Cpu Board and Power Supply board. I don't see anything that might produce sound.
Can you find a speaker in there?

Speaker in side of control console, as I said, not sure if grayhound board is original. Thanks for the reply though

My excuses, I missed the speaker part in your first post.
The board in front with the 2 potmeters is perhaps not a power supply board but a sound amplifier board.
There is not really a clear picture of that board. The number off the chip on the heatsink would also be helpfull
to identify the functionallity of that board. Maybe someone knowing those boards can give better answers.

The front board with the pots is the claw control board, the pots adjust the voltage to the magnet coil to adjust tension of jaws

Some of those do produce sound from the CPU board based on the ROM version used. (note the date code 4-7-93 for reference)
It's an attract tune that can be controlled by the dipswitch settings. Yours appears to be "on", so it's a matter of getting the speaker hooked back up to see for sure.

Is there a volume potentiometer mounted somewhere in the cabinet?
Usually mounted separately on a bracket somewhere, not on the cpu or relay pcb.

Right off it appears you are missing that particular section of the harness for the volume and speaker (and prize sensor/meter if equipped).

CPU board--> Relay board--> Volume potentiometer--> Speaker

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for putting so much effort into your reply :)
That is awesome!
I will look into it  and your schematic will definitely help.
It is not that important that i get sound working but would be nice.
I have made modified jaws and it now picks up full cans of beer!
Setting it up for man cave accessory.

Cheers

No problem. I just can't confirm for sure if your ROM version has the added sound or not.
Mine is a 11-21-1993 Candy Crane and it does have it.

Why the harness would be missing like that...who knows. But you have a speaker, so that's a plus.

The sound isn't much really, but cool to have working "just because".
Every minute or few it'll play a little attract tune, and on ours it'll make noise when moving the claw around and will also play a "win" tune when something drops through the whole (hence the photo sensor in the diagram).

The volume potentiometer is a 100 Ohm, just to clarify since the labeling on the drawing is a bit odd.
(on the drawing it looks like 10 O, like 10 Ohm, but it's a 100 Ohm)

The dipswitches for the sound are typically 4, 5, and 7.
Settings should be something like this:

#4
On - Watlz
Off – Sting

#5
On – 3 Minute Interval
Off – 1 Minute Interval
or
#5
On – 3 Minute Interval
Off – 5 Minute Interval (was handwritten on one of my sheets, not sure if correct)

#7
On – Disable Attract Tune
Off – Enable Attract Tune

Post up a picture of your whole cabinet and we might be able to tell if it's an original Grayhound. They didn't make too many styles.

Hehe. That's cool.
I'm stealing your pic, I know some guys that'll appreciate it.  ;D

Your machine is definitely Grayhound-esque in construction. It appears to be a taller version of what I have.
Tall was typical for plush or toy cranes and short was more for the candy cranes it seemed. Don't see too many of the short ones though.

A lot of vendors would put their generic "Treasure Shoppe" or "Treasure Chest" and such on them for their routes.
These companies changed hands a lot too, so sometimes things get all mixed up. I certainly don't know all the details of who did what and when.

Does yours have the LED rope lights in the front corners?

Here's a Candy Shop like mine. You can see they are built pretty much like yours but the bottom is hacked shorter and the control box moved up a bit.

Yep, it did have the rope light in the aluminum extrusions but it didn't work. could not believe that I found one exactly the same at a garage sale a week after I tried to get it going, however not all the colors were flashing so I bought new RGB led strips off ebay and they are so much better and brighter, has a controller to change flashing mode as well, bought 5 meter strip and had enough to do 2 vertical strips each side of mirror inside cabinet as well in the extrusions.

That's a damn good idea. Ours has segments dieing, so it may be time to replace them as well.

They would have to be 4 times as bright as the rope light.
each led module has the 3 colors so you can do some great sequencing on them.
5 metre waterproof strip mini controller, power supply about 20 bucks delivered.
you can cut them every 3 leds and can buy non solder joiners for about $1 ea

I mucked around with wiring yesterday, connected the speaker to the orange and blue wire on the connector where the loom is missing but no sound yet.
there is another socket just beside that one that has 2 wires in it, tried that but still no good, will keep investigating further but if i cant get it going, i wont be too worried.
still a bit of work to go on cabinet, was going to spray paint it and re do all the control labels.
Cheers

The two pin should be for the "Win Meter". Like for when every time a prize falls through the hole it counts, kinda like a coin meter but for prizes won.

Have you let it just sit there and run a while? (the tune is a timed interval)
Or played it a time or two to see if it made any noises?

I really still can't say for certain if yours has the tune option on the ROM.
Might try flipping dipswitches 4, 5, 7 back and forth a time or two just for kicks.

Oh...with machine off, flip dipswitch #8 ON, turn machine on...should go into self-test mode.
Then turn ONLY dipswitch #4 ON, this is the sound test (if you have the sound option of course).

Love your other projects, the contemporary look is a nice touch.
I've wanted to do some barrel projects myself, but more traditional Pong and Donkey Kong an such for those.
