Title: The Summer 2015 Anti-Chuff Thread
Post by: HaRuMaN on June 17, 2015, 02:30:55 pm
Got anything that really peed in your wheaties?

I didn't, until yesterday.  Went upstairs and it was fairly hot up there, even with the AC going non-stop.  Long story short, gotta replace the upstairs unit, 4 ton capacity.   :banghead:

Not like it was a total surprise.  It is 16 years old, in AZ, and was just a builder unit, not a brand name like York or Trane.  Still sucks, though.   :'(

I work in a hospital with a really stupid scheduling system. Basically, you bid on it and hope you get something. Well, I missed a phone call from the hospital. Can't call back because call display doesn't show the extension number from the caller. So I get the message, listen to it, and call back. It has now been 3 minutes. And in that time, since I missed the phone, I missed 4 months of full time work.

Dude, just from the advertising alone and the brand image I would think George Brazil would be charging more than everyone else. Not to mention the high image the guy has of himself (or had, no disrespect), but with his strapping young image plastered everywhere I bet it's safe to say that old George was doing more than fixing A/C units back in the day.

That being said I've used Ron Brock's Heating and Cooling the past 10 years and they've been pretty great. Every time I've said my A/C was out they have been there same day, even late.

Good luck though. It's been damn hot and looks to continue for the next week. If you've had good luck with them though please let us know. It's always good to have options.

Hahaha! I thought I was the only guy with the impression that ol' George was laying the pipe while doing house calls back in the day.....

Just did some research - the repairman photo on those trucks is a composite drawing of a pair of models and NOT the real George Brazil, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 82.

The image is trademarked.

Ahhhh. Now I feel bad, but they sure made the image look good. Still though - if like to hear back how it all goes. My A/C unit is 10 years old now so I know I'm on borrowed time going forward. Hoping to get another 2-3 out of it.

Edit: for the record though, I wasn't necessarily badmouthing him. I just thought he might have had alternative intentions lol.

While George Brazil probably isn't the cheapest, their service has always been top notch.  We've had the same technician for the last 6 years.  I called him 4:30pm Tuesday, he was at our house about 8:30.  New AC getting installed today.  10 year warranty, parts & labor.

It's not entirely unexpected, but the fact that the main support beam holding up the house I just bought is literally half as strong as it should be is cramping my chuff.
A structural engineer has already hashed out the details.  A qualified contractor (key word qualified) looked at it and said he could get to it in a few weeks, but he hasn't gotten back to me with the price quote yet.
It's not going to be completely budget busting (at least I don't think so), but it's going to delay other parts of the renovation for a few months while I make up the shortfall.

Aside from tens of thousands in medical work so far this year, my right hand being somewhat useless and looking like it won't be back to "normal" for at least a few more months, dozens of painful injections in my back, and the consequential weight gain that comes from being unable to get meaningful exercise,  I have little to complain about.  Well, I could complain about the massive checks I will have to write for my daughter's college education, but while that means about $12k per year less chuff (pretty much 100% of my chuff-get), I have to be thankful that I don't have to borrow it.

Hey, man, we all got stiffed once or twice driving 30 miles outside of town to go look at a game under a pile of crap.

If they can't load it in a truck and won't throw $50 at it, it's conversational junk and not something they actually care about.

I remember when I first got started in this hobby, I was looking for an empty cab to MAME. Some dude on Craigslist had a cab listed (no picture) for $50, so I went to look at it. It was one of those weird cabs where the monitor is somewhat separate, almost like a CRT pedestal. I told him I wanted something more traditional, and he said he had a Nintendo cab on the side of the house. We went to look it it. It was weatherbeaten, faded, rained on, weeds growing up through the bottom of the cab, dogs probably ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- in it... and he offered it to me for MORE than the other cab. I politely declined.

Yeah, so, when I started, I called an operator and said I wanted something, "really cheap" and amazingly never got a call back.

Plenty of, "come take a look and make me an offer on it" types that thought their Robocop was worth "$10,000 when it was new."

Then I posted on a local usenet group in ~2001 about it, and got a phone call from a woman that bought a Tempest out of the arcade she worked at in 1982 and had it in a back bedroom.  As calmly as possible I said I'd take it, but was told, "going to have to do some research on the value and think about how I'm going to move all the furniture and piles of fabric out of the way."  For giggles I'd hand her phone number out occasionally and she was still banging that drum 10 years later.

Then I got the bright idea to saw a cabinet in half so I could fit it into a Mercury Sable.  Drive six hours to a Super Auction.  First machine was a Final Fight conversion of a Jungle Hunt.  $91.  Bought a rechargeable saw at Wal-Mart and got about 2/3s of the way around the cabinet before it ran out of juice.  Used a hammer and a hand saw to finish the job. Got the top half into the backseat.  Couldn't fit the bottom in the trunk.  Stripped everything out, left the cabinet behind, and hauled ass out of there.  Neck on the monitor broke on the first left turn.  :-P  Plus side was there was roughly $70 in quarters in the bottom and I rigged up a 'supergun' out of a monitor stand, keyboard tray, and a Commodore CGA/EGA monitor.  Actually made money on the ordeal when I dumped the board on Ebay.

Just spent all day cramming my fat butt under my Camaro to swap out the speed sensor.... I finally got it off.... RockAuto.com sent me the wrong one.  So I spent another hour or two getting the old one back on so it's driveable.  The sticker expires this month so I thought I would do that at least..... except I can't find the insurance card.  I go to RockAuto.com to return the part... I've missed their return window by 6 days.

Eh but the Radio's ok.

I mowed the yard yesterday evening.  It was going to rain somewhere; very dark, slightly thundering.

I missed a spot in the front yard, large enough that parking a car over it wouldn't cover it.

Apparently spending most of the day crawling around in a hot dark attic that isn't large enough to stand up in while wearing a respirator because the air induces coughing fits will suck the chuff right out of you despite what you've accomplished while up there.

Managed to install a ceiling light and two wall sconces in the living room without damaging the drywall, but I'm just not feeling chuffed so I'm posting in the Anti-Chuff thread.

I don't want to go back up there.  :scared

Won't help with the breathing, but I wired in a bunch of Christmas lights in my attic.  They come on with the single light socket up there.

I will never not have an attic that isn't lit by Christmas lights ever again.

I spent a much of the day yesterday in the crawl space with the dust and cobwebs moving electric for the bath project. not much fun either, but well lit by my sting of construction lights, 10 lights 10' apart, 100w bulbs, hanging semi-permanently in the crawlspace.

Heh, when you live in a place dubbed "the chemical valley" you call it good luck when you aren't born with three eyes.

Eh I'll live... I just didn't think so at the time.  Over the years I've stepped on nails, had my foot sliced open to clean the wound, nearly drilled through my finger, got "the shingles", torn muscles.... yeah I guess that stuff didn't hurt as much as I thought it did.

I was already going to a kidney specialist because my thyroid doctor saw that my creatine levels were off, so it may be related... I'll see him next week.

Sorry to hear about your pain Howard.  I've never had the luxury of kidney stones myself.  I hear they are a real pain in the dick.  I have the pleasure of seizures and migraines.  I got in a car accident when I was 18 and crushed my nose against the steering wheel.  Had to have reconstructive surgery and wear a nose brace for a week.  And now I have to take pills so I dont pass out from flashing lights.  My nuerologist is a cutie so I guess thats a plus.

My weekend sucked ass also.  I got into a big fight with my wife over parenting.  I had to replace the alternator and my battery in my truck in the parking lot of Auto Zone 150 miles away from my house with tools I already had but had to buy at Auto Zone.  And I got there by getting my truck towed twenty miles because my truck puked on the interstate.  So after a two hour fight with the alternator I got my truck started and was pulled over by Ohios finest two hours after that and given a speeding ticket just so I could make it to an empty apartment where Im working in W Virginia to sleep alone and go into work where the project manager I am working under makes all the wrong decisions, gets OSHA called on us and a safety guy who thinks sitting in his office is the best way to make sure my crew is participating in safe work practices.

I lost $5 in a  5c Keno machine.  Took the mechanic 90 mins to come out and fix it.

By the time the dude got there I won $450 (6 out of 6) with my other $5 on the machine to the right.

Went to Macys and bought a bunch of Coco Chanel makeup for the old girl.  Arrived home and got totally chewed out for being late.

Cant win successfully, apparently....

Yeah that one pisses me off as well.  One guy 10 years ago uses the abbreviation in a youtube video or something and now all the noobs think it's a term.

While we are on wordplay, it's "s-n-e-s" not "sneez".  So why is the original Nintendo a "nes"?  Because that doesn't sound utterly retarded.

I'm so busy this summer, I have zero time to invest in my PS4 or arcade games.  I want to be 25 years old again with no responsibilities!  I could get home from work at 4:00 and play games until I went to bed if I wanted to.  Now I'm lucky to get an hour of free time...and if I do, I figure why bother.

Sink leaks suck ass.  I didnt notice mine until the kitchen sink leaked into the basement and when I pulled everything out from underneath the sink my cabinet bottom had begun to warp.  Fun times.

Pex is super simple to work with. Now, the tools are a little unweildy and way overpriced. I generally use the regular crimps but for tight spaces I have been using Waterline pinch clamps. Similar idea but the tools are way smaller and a heck of a lot cheaper.

I went to Lowe's last night because I didn't understand what I was looking at.  I didn't know you could use compression fittings with Pex.  Fortunately a plumber was in the isle and butted in to our conversation.  He walked me through what to buy and how to replace it.   I told my wife that it was too rainy to do plumbing so I haven't started yet.   :lol

My leak is at the red arrow in the attached picture.

Heh... compression fittings are the whole reason to use pex... I'm not sure why anyone would bother with the other methods.  You are going to open that up and find that either the plastic collar the goes inside the pipe is mis-aligned or the little metal washer that goes around the pipe has cut through it.  It's a 5 minute job, tops.

Pex is great.  Like Howard said its usually the fittings that are causing you the problem.

Don't misunderstand me I love Pex.  I ran it all through my basement.  But I borrowed the crimping tool when I did that 7 years ago.  When I first saw the leak I assumed I would need to cut into the Pex and buy a tool so I could crimp a new fitting.  Live and learn.

Had one goal this weekend, change the timing chain on my car. Power outage all weekend from a Friday storm. Not that I needed power to open up a car, but I sure as hell needed light. Apparently, the electrical in my area is pure crap because there were power lines down all over within a 1 mile radius of my house. I had a high voltage line dangling above my driveway. Hot weekend, no AC, and I had to keep the kids outside but somehow manage to keep them away from the dangling death-wire outside my front door. Yeah, I had a hard time focusing on my one task.

I did manage to at least get the engine ripped open to do the job. Had to remove the valve cover, front wheel, part of the fender and main drive pulley to gain access, but I did it, but I had to make a makeshift spring tensioner to remove the drive belt. The timing chain kit I ordered didn't come with replacement bolts, and when I opened up my engine, the bolts holding the chain retaining piece were trashed. They were specialty bolts. Gotta figure out a plan fast, because I have a road trip in a week.

So my anti chuff is the Offroad Thunder I bought stopped booting, no beeps. Pulled the PC out of the cab, took it apart, cleaned everything. Put back together no boot. Replaced power supply, no boot. Replaced RAM, no boot. For giggles I was moving the fan connectors around, turns out the fan header for the CPU fan wasnt giving any juice. New CPU on the way. And by new, I mean a PII 350MHz Slot 1 CPU($23 shipped from feebay) Luckily I have a fan header splitter already. If this new CPU doesnt do the trick the cab's getting MAME'd

If you can't get the OEM ones fast enough, a machine shop can make them for you.
They can test the hardness of the metal and use an appropriate metal.
Of course you'll pay out the ass, but you'll be on the road.

EDIT: also look at local bolt suppliers.  I was surprised to realize there was more than one local business who sold nothing but nuts, screws, & bolts.

Thanks! That is not a bad idea. I did some research on some auto forums and there was a guy who made a reinforced version of the bolt I needed. Surprisingly, he was local. I thought I had it licked. Sadly, the guy passed away 3 months ago.  :( His grandson was taking orders in his place for the last couple months, but never shipping out any product. Who the hell scams people using their departed grandfather?

Come to think of it, there is a Fastenal store just a minute away from my work. I have never paid it a visit. I might start there today.

Where I worked previously, people would send me an email in the middle of the afternoon asking me to take care of some annoying thing that wasn't my responsibility.
Then they'd leave the building right after hitting send so I couldn't argue with them.  I don't like rewarding that kind of behavior, but my sense of responsibility always made a sucker out of me.  I never could just let things go to ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- for the sake of teaching one person a lesson.

Yeah, I recently switch jobs and the old one still won't let go.  Now they want me to interview replacements, which puts me in a weird situation.  Why did I quit?  They were broke and about to lay people off.  I knew they couldn't make payroll.  The twice a month threat to make me part time had escalated to twice a week.

Those interviews ought to be very interesting unless they bring in candidates that are desperate for paycheck and don't ask questions.

All that being said, there are a few individuals that are diverted straight to voice mail or safely tucked away in a dusty mailbox folder.  Being free of their clutches is a big relief.  Highly recommended.

Yes it definitley does suck.  My wife and I had a rescue for a year but had to put her down because of seizures.  It's hard but they way I see it is you gave your dog 13 years that he may not have had if not for you and your family.

I'm also sorry to hear about your father.  It's hard to see someone in your family have to go through that.  I have to spend a lot of time in the hospital due to my wife so I understand.  Stay strong for yourself and those around you.

Thanks for the well wishes!   My dad is home from the hospital and doing better, just some medication changes for now.  He had a quadruple bypass in 2001, so he has a history of heart issues.

I hope your wife is doing ok, hospitals are not fun places.

This is the second dog we lost this year, we had to put our Boston Terrier rescue to sleep in January because of  a brain tumor.

The first thing I remember seeing him in was an independent movie called "The Station Agent".
He was good in it.  I liked the movie, but it may have been just because it was a break from the usual mass market crap movies.

He was also good on the TV show Nip Tuck.

EDIT: after watching the trailer, the station agent was far from an independent film

Elf, Nip/Tuck TV show (awesome show but not because of him), The second Narnia movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past

Not a ton of roles for a 1/2 a man , but his movie career is going better than mine.

Minor thing, but still chuff reducing....

I get home from work and the house smells like it's been hosed down with disinfectant.  Doesn't look like anything has been cleaned.  All windows were closed.  Smell is strong and everywhere.  Can't localize it.  Nothing looks spilled under the sink where cleaning products are kept.  It was disturbing.  Did something bad happen here and get cleaned up before I got home?  Upon a second investigation of the cleaning products I noticed a barely audible hiss.  It stopped when I touched the lysol air deodorizer.  Ugh I hate this smell and it's going to take a while to go away.  Throat kinda burns too.

Yup that Lysol stuff makes me gag.  Seriously even if just a little is sprayed around me I get dizzy and feel like I am going to vomit.  When someone brings a can to work for the crapper I will throw it away.

It's that old world throwback to where some people think the way to get rid of a bad smell is to douse it in perfume.  I assure you it isn't.  Charcoal, baking soda or some other odor absorbing substance is the proper way to do it.  Febreeze does a decent job.... if you don't ruin it by getting a scented bottle.

During winter time you can get Febreeze cranberry frost, it actually smells good.

I literally just watched that movie this week.

I'm also at the end of my rope. Everything seems to like to be a problem at the same time it seems. I can handle a few things but it's been so long since I've had actual conflict in my life that it's harder to deal with than ever.

Today, we have got "the Bobs" at my office. Who knows where I will be in a month.

More bolt related problems. I need to get my family car working by tomorrow morning to drive to a reunion, and it is in a million pieces in my driveway. Yesterday I broke off the main bolt in my camshaft. Up til 2am to extract it. Right after work today I will have to drive my "around town" car 20 miles to get a replacement bolt that took hours to locate. I learned the hard way what a "torque to yield" bolt is, why it should never be reused, and that I can't use a regular bolt to replace it. I swear, modern engines are an entirely different breed than the 80's and earlier engines I grease monkeyed around with in my earlier years.

I'll spare you the rest of my drama, but it heavily stems from not enough time, and too much of the big stuff to worry about.

I had one of those days yesterday.. Power outage followed by a series of failures in hardware complicated by the specialists that I call on when I am stumped either being MIA or retired.  Not good on one of the busiest days of the year (usually do about a million in sales each day this time of year).  The moment I got all the fires put out and things working again at all locations, a meeting I had scheduled with a wifi specialist started, so I missed lunch.  Then more power outage problems cropped up at the end of the day (internet service this time) and system was back down from 6:30 pm to 6:30 am, 3 hours after the maintenance window had ended.  Nothing like being the one responsible for the network and servers being up and being down 18 of 24 hours during the busiest time of year.

Went home desperately needing a beer but I had been sick the day before and still hurt from vomiting all night Monday night and stomach was still a bit too tender for alcohol, so I skipped that.  Upside is I took care of stuff that would have been worse if power had gone out while I was on vacation, and today things are going pretty well, so it isn't all bad.  Nevermind, while composing this I checked on a program to see if the software vendor had it working yet and it crashed the Java server and bumped 130 people out.. awesome.  Now I am restarting the damn server again.  I just gotta stay away from this thread.. so much negative energy, lol.

Well, maybe lame to you... but a lot of people feel like the first few birthdays are more for the parents because the babies won't have any memories other than photographs and whatnot. I think instead of telling them straight up not to come, you could either move the party if it's important to you that they come or let them know how important it is to you that they do show.

Not so sure on that.. Here is my recent history with vehicles:
Son's car: 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse, had 75k miles on it, bought for $3500.
Tires:$750
Battery: $120
Clutch: $600
Clutch master cyl.:$180
Brakes: $400
1000 miles away the timing belt goes on the interstate. Tow home: $800
Top end of motor rebuild (done at home): $1200
Cat converter and rear O2 sensor: $600
Tires get slashed: used tires $100
Kid gets into trouble with drugs, girlfriend ends up driving for 1000 miles without oil.. engine toast.
New Engine: $3400 (after kid is out of jail and on the rehab.. )
injectors all bad: $400
radiator leak after new motor: $250 to fix, overheated and melted tab on motor, goodbye 7 year 100k mile warranty on motor
While kid in jail, stereo stolen: $1000 lost
Also, door is hit by another car.
New door: $360
new center console from breakin: $100
New Tires: $650
car sits for 8 months while kid has no license.  intake gasket dries up and cracks, orings on injectors corrode plus front o2 goes bad: $540
clutch master cyl leaks: warranty (woot)
battery bad (warranty)
So now it has:
new o2 sensors, new cat converter, new clutch, new master&slave cyls, new engine, new battery, new tires, new brakes, body is in decent shape, interior is in decent shape.. car is worth about $3800 book, lol.  Total investment over 3 years: about $14,500

Next, Daughter saves up and I match funds, find a nice 2000 Ford Focus for $2800.  Engine is solid, timing belt had been replaced at 90k, body in great shape, etc.  One day a rad line gets a leak and is spraying coolant on exhaust manifold.  Take it to mechanic friend, he finds a small leak in trans that over time meant low trans fluid, slipped a couple times, burnt up discs in trans.  New trans and coolant line: $2500

Finally, buddy has an old 86 Nissan pickup.  I needed a little pickup and this fit the bill perfectly.. 4wd, trans had been replaced 5 years ago, engine had about 10k miles on new motor about 7 years ago (w/warranty).  Was a $1500 pickup, but buddy who owned it just put new alternator, battery, and tires on it, so offered $2100 and bought it.  One day son is driving (while his car was dead waiting for motor), couple of rad hoses leaked, engine overheated, and starter chooses to go out at that moment.  $800 for 3 hoses, starter, and a couple other minor issues.  Now son gets run off road at a roundabout, engine mounts are old and one breaks, engine comes up and tears wiring, breaks loose exhaust, and wreaks general havoc, including 2 more rad hoses leaking.  $1200 to get all fixed up.  Girlfriend drives for a while after her truck dies, one day won't start.  Tow it to shop, engine is dead (timing chain went from sitting for long periods and so much metal in oil it looks like glitter).  Engine is 4 months out of warranty.  Opt for new engine with warranty again since truck isn't too bad overall and with previous luck on vehicles I figured if I spent $3500 on another used pickup the motor could blow the next week (especially given my luck with motors lately).  So buy new motor with 7 year 100k warranty: $3500.  With trans and transfer case done, tires in decent shape, brakes in decent shape, clutch only 5 years old with maybe 5k miles, truck has 230k miles on it but not much rust and decent truck to begin with, it isn't terrible, just all the other crap got expensive.  Dropped another $150 into front suspension, replaced all bushings and shocks and re-indexed torsion bars, now rides like it's only 10 years old, engine runs well, and while interior is pretty ugly, everything functions.  So my $1500 truck cost me almost $9000.

My daily driver is a company car, so no money spent there, Thank God.
Total spent on vehicles in the past 3 years: about $29,000 for 3 vehicles with total book value of about $8000

Still cheaper than 3 years of being married, lol.

Well I got the Camaro up on ramps AGAIN and somehow managed to squeeze my fat self under the thing AGAIN and replaced the speed sensor AGAIN because rockauto sent me the wrong one last time.  Hook it up AGAIN ........and.... nothing....  So it's not the vss.  So now I'll have to wedge myself under the dash and get the VSS buffer out and try to track one down.  If that's not it then I dunno... that's the limit of my electrical knowledge on the car's gages.

Why does my car have a vss and a buffer again?  You know it was assembled in Canada so I blame the Canadians.

My Camaro doesn't have a speedometer either, Got the trans rebuilt paid the dimwit like 1700.00 and the car came back with no speedometer, Three years later the car still sits out behind the barn and wont even start now cause the gas is so old.

Refrigerator died yesterday.. just went grocery shopping, so I lost around $300 in frozen foods.  Fridge is 15 years old so rather than repair I think it is time to buy new, but I can't seem to find a brand that looks reliable.  Lucky Goldstar (LG) is still a cheap VCR company to me, I always see $35 microwaves and $15 vcrs when I see that brand.  Plus I took a risk with an LG dryer recently and I am less than impressed.  Samsung seems popular, but I can't find a single "top ten" review with a Samsung in it.  I have heard horror stories about Maytag, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire, but you never know if that is just people who had a bum unit and were unlucky or if the brands are truly crap.  When looking to spend $2-3k without the luxury of spending the time to research properly, it really sucks.  I need something soon or what food I have that is still good will be trash.  Unfortunately I can't eat 10 lbs of chicken breasts, 25 hamburger patties, ten lbs of burritos, and 12 lbs of hamburger meat tonight, so my two week stock of frozen meats is mostly going to go to waste.  It is rapidly approaching room temperature and I am pretty sure refreezing it is a bad idea at this point.  I knew the other shoe would drop sooner or later.  At least this time it is only money.

I personally stay away from korean brands when it comes to appliances and electronics. The have a history of using components with a more limited lifespan in order to offer more features for the cost. I would go with them in a heartbeat for an appliance in a house I was planning on moving out of in 5 years, because other than the stunted lifespan, they are good.

+1 to PBJ. Most my food lasted through a 2 & 1/2 day power outage last week, ice chests the second night for anything I was overly worried about, grilled a lot of meat, and even some of the ice cream lived through the outage.

Every single thing I've bought because of it was rated highly by consumer reports has fallen short of expectations.  I rely on amazon reviews almost exclusively now.

I just spent four days at a motorcycle rally sleeping on an air mattress with a slow leak.  Two hours into the four hours of sleep I got each night, some part of my body would be bottoming out and touching the ground.  I felt fine in the morning though.

Slept on my consumer reports #1 rated inner coil spring mattress last night and my back hurt like hell this morning...same as it does every morning.  I should have returned that thing in the 30 return window.

Same experience with trash bags, appliances, etc.

Went with this one:
http://www.whirlpool.com/kitchen-1/refrigeration-2/refrigerators-3/- (http://www.whirlpool.com/kitchen-1/refrigeration-2/refrigerators-3/-)[WRX988SIBM]-1021865/WRX988SIBM/
Got it from Lowes for $2400, added the 5 year warranty (which I normally don't do) for $150, but also got a Lowes credit card that I will cancel next month after paying for this which gave me another 5% off, so that covered $125 of the warranty.  I gotta pick it up though, so it's good that my little pickup runs well, lol.

Warranty:  Normally I avoid in store warranties, but there are so many "horror story" reviews of refrigerators bad out of the box or failing in the first few months that, even with a brand that my buddy who repairs appliances for a living recommended, it made sense to throw that warranty on.  If I didn't, I would end up with a bad compressor in a year and have a $400 bill and a ton of food all thawed out again.  This way I will never end up having an issue (because if you have warranty you almost never need it, lol).

Of course, now I need to replace all my other appliances to match the stainless, lol.  Oh well, microwave is as old as the fridge, and was eyeing a new one anyway.  Ranges aren't that expensive, and it is a good excuse to make the jump to gas.  Dishwasher and sink.. ah hell, I'm a guy, so who cares, right?

And I am having kids move the stuff into the beer fridge this morning.  Milk was cold but getting warm by this morning.. compressor must be out because the fan was working.  Felt like it was blowing cold air last night, but went to a Motley Crue concert and didn't have time to deal with it (was waiting to see if turning the temp down fixed the issue anyway) and by the time I got home everything was still defrosted and most of it worthless already, so I just went to bed.  I can grill up the chicken and burgers, and the rest will keep for a few more days, but mostly I have to trash stuff like burritos, pizzas, etc.  I just stocked up too, which is the part that sucks the most.

Saved me another $238.17, thanks!  Got the fridge moved in, but had to go through the back, and because it is 36" x 34", had to unpack it to get it through the 36" doorways.  Only had me (gimped with right arm and wrist at about 50% strength still) and my son, who is strong, and this thing is frackin heavy.  Going up the back deck stairs, he lost it and had to set it down.  Even though he laid it down gently, it happened to come to rest on the edge of the door and sure as sh!t, it dented the door, right on the corner, which on stainless is super visible.

So it's good I saved all that, I might end up spending twice as much to buy a new door.  I doubt the extended coverage covers damage like that.. of course it had to be the door with the ice/water dispenser, not the easy door with nothing on it.  Also it had to be the door that is most visible in the kitchen.. the other side is practically invisible.. go figure...

Anyway, I am sure I tweaked something in my back, but the fridge is in.  I told the kid to call some friends and haul the other one out and headed back to work, lol.  I am not in the mood to muscle another one out of the house.  I will get it quoted for repair and if it isn't horrible I can use it in the garage as a spare.

Yeah, I just couldn't justify saying that.. A $1500 door makes it tempting, but I couldn't look anyone in the face and try to pull that one off.. I will just have to live with it.  Got a buddy who does paintless dent work, will see if he can at least minimize the ding.. would be easy if it hadn't been on the edge of the door.

If it's not a scratch but instead a dent then it's usually fairly easy to get out.  They make dent pullers for cars that work via suction cups... you can get a kit for 20 bucks at your auto parts store.

+1

If you can remove the metal from the door that should still be fairly easy to fix.

Wouldn't hurt anything to play around with it....

Don't forget the 20% coupon from your Sunday paper, NRA magazine(much longer expiration date), or online.  ;)

I just realized that I haven't been taking the harbor freight coupons from the NRA magazines in the lobby.
Meh, haven't needed anything from there in a long time anyway.

FYI, Barkeeper's friend is the shiznit for stainless.

The fridge that came with the house I just bought had several long lines of pretty nasty rust spots.
As a renter, I'd scrubbed it with scouring pads and steel wool (never do that).
It would look less noticeable for a short time, then the rust would come back.

After buying the place, I was more serious about fixing it so I put more effort into researching the issue.
Barkeeper's friend contains oxalic acid which neutralizes the rust and allows the stainless surface to heal itself (chromium oxidizing IIRC).
I was amazed how easily the fridge cleaned up with it.  It's been months and the rust spots have not returned.

That kit is really nice!  I think it's more for car doors, but it would make short work of the ding in the picture.

CLR is good for rust as well.  Get a plastic scouring pad or aluminum foil, soak the area in CLR and you'd be amazed how well it works.

It would be easy if I could get at it from behind.. but this is a one piece door filled with foam insulation.  The skin is not removable and you can't access the back of it.  The bulge on the front of the door from the dent warps the front, and if I push that in it will only make the dent on the side more pronounced.

I will just have to live with it.  Not a big deal, just sucks.

Here's some annoying news. I was selected for the Golden Tee Mobile beta, and was actually really excited about it. I work a lot of night shifts and what better way to pass the time! So I was supposed to get it yesterday, but never got the download instructions. After a few emails back and forth, I was told the beta was only for US residents.

Noted, but unless I've misread this thread, none of that was on topic for this thread, and once it started to turn unpleasant I just nuked the thread derail entirely, as I do on any other thread that turns unpleasant and is off topic, leaving the original meat of this thread intact.

If you want to complain about moderation, please do it in the forum discussion forum.

Also, I'd be just as happy if you didn't, not because I don't care about your opinions, but because I've heard them enough that additional discussion on it won't add anything. However, if you feel strongly, feel free in the appropriate forum.

I've said and I repeat that I won't close this forum down until the last visitor stops visiting, to the point where I've made arrangements with my wife if something should happen to me, but sometimes folks can make it hard to stick to my guns. Not a threat, just a lament.

You don't won't to buy that one anyway...  Seller "sold" it to at least 4 people on KLOV for $100, taking their money, before throwing it up on eBay for $300.

Interesting quote from an article on Amazon.com's success...

Quote
As the company has grown, Mr. Bezos has become more committed to his original ideas, viewing them in almost moral terms, those who have worked closely with him say. “My main job today: I work hard at helping to maintain the culture,” Mr. Bezos said last year at a conference run by Business Insider, a web publication in which he is an investor.

Of all of his management notions, perhaps the most distinctive is his belief that harmony is often overvalued in the workplace — that it can stifle honest critique and encourage polite praise for flawed ideas. Instead, Amazonians are instructed to “disagree and commit” (No. 13) — to rip into colleagues’ ideas, with feedback that can be blunt to the point of painful, before lining up behind a decision.

“We always want to arrive at the right answer,” said Tony Galbato, vice president for human resources, in an email statement. “It would certainly be much easier and socially cohesive to just compromise and not debate, but that may lead to the wrong decision.”

Timing couldn't be worse with a baby coming, and I am in the middle of an evaluation period for a pending promotion that I will now never see. Almost 10 years with the company, it is just gonna be weird to see everything go down in flames. I hope the buyers are at least good to our restaurants and try to keep enough of them open.

Looks like Cocos Bakery (never heard of it) has been kicked around several times the last few years.  San Antonio must be waiving taxes or something because the current owners sure don't have much of a physical presence there.  Oh well, another one to add to the 'weird companies in San Antonio' list alongside that multinational cult compound.

Eh, it was some odd woman run ostensibly christian thing.  They had an unmarked road going back to their compound that was guarded by an off duty police officer 24/7.  Very secure fencing.  Got around the cop once by cutting through some brush and there was a big locked gate with their logo on it and nothing else.  Couldn't really see much from the gate.

Members were expected to spend at least a week a year at the compound.  They used to house a bunch of African kids there but have since moved that operation to another state.

Who knows... maybe it was some run of the mill 'spread the gospel' thing but it felt very secretive out there.

Yeah, hard to say when they live in a guarded fort. Those "other" groups are out there.

When my wife was a teen, she got roped into some camping trip run by a "Bible study group", it turned out to be pretty culty. The first night around a campfire she was asked to share some of her views. They didn't meet up with their specific views, so the group leader started loudly wailing and crying, between sobs she said she was crying in sorrow because her soul was damned forever for not accepting their groups beliefs. Immediately everyone else in the group stopped being nice, openly shunned her and told she was a horrible person unless joined them and agreed to their "code of virtues".

Why I'm not chuffing along anymore on my renovations:

The contractor that was supposed to replace the main support beam holding up my house has flaked.
Not much has been accomplished in the past month since I can't refinish the floors or hang doors until the beam is done.
And I can't set up furniture or organize rooms until the floors are done.
I know...first world problems, but living in an empty, partially renovated house (indefinitely) sucks.
I've been working with a new contractor, but I get the feeling it's a bit over their head and they might flake too.

The contractors so far keep wanting the structural engineer to allow them to take shortcuts to get the job done faster (using air nailers instead of specialty lag bolts, etc).
Hell I've gone over what needs done so much that I'm fairly confident I could do it myself.  I'd have to lay out the money for a bunch of temporary posts I'd only use once though and then there's the fact that if I mess up and the house implodes, homeowners insurance wouldn't cover it.
Hopefully the people I'm working with now can get it done next month.

Well religion is the opium of the masses.  The only difference between a cult and regular religion is the intensity of their actions.  Just for fun google the Marx quote and you'll find dozens of right wing bloggers trying to re-write history by saying Marx didn't mean it that way.  ;)

I figured anyone not from the northeast would have to.  ;D  I think they did open one in California recently.
They adopted the touchscreen ordering process early, like late 80's early 90's.
You can get just about whatever food you want, customized however you want 24/7...and it's pretty good.

I also buy my gas there and use the ATM there regularly.

Yeah, I guess I forget how small their actual footprint is because they are so friggin' ubiquitous everywhere I've lived  (WV, VA, PA).
Just in the last 6 or 7 years, they've built 3 or 4 new ones where I live now.

They are closing my particular store because it's small, outdated, & there is another one just 2 miles up the road.

Come to Texas and admire our Buc-ee's.  The upscale "truck stop" that doesn't sell diesel or have driveways big enough for an 18 wheeler to navigate.  But, hey, 120 unleaded pumps per location.

They love putting them on the other side of the highway from famous gas stations that have been there for decades.  I'm watching Waller County Line BBQ and Prasek's Hillje Smokehouse slowly wither away....

I actually miss shopping at HEB

I have very, very mixed feelings on HEB.  They pretty much took over the grocery business in San Antonio, which I could forgive, BUT they only open locations on land that they own.  And they never sell their land.  When they decide they want to open a larger one, they just shut down the old one, and move down the road.  They refuse to lease out the old locations to competitors, so they end up empty or with crap like LA Fitness or some crossfit thing.  There are large sections of that city that are blighted food deserts now.

Their slant towards Texas products is a mixed bag, too.  It starts off great, and then they decide to get exclusive contracts with the producers, and then they drop the quality.

I can't buy shrimp off the boat in my family's home town anymore because all the local shrimpers are locked into HEB contracts and get perks for snitching on each other.  In other towns they own and operate their own fleets of boats.  Thanks to BP it's impossible to get a feel on the shrimp market price, but I've got a feeling it's going to march steadily upward soon.

On the other hand, they employ significant numbers of handicapped people and are generally a pleasant shopping experience.

Meh.

In the past 24 months, three of the SHMUP boards I want the most have slipped through my fingers because I've either not had the $ at the time of the sale, or balked at the price too long allowing someone else to swoop in and close the deal...

Add Fighting Hawk to the list of shattered dreams and missed opportunities....

Guess it's true, I'm not good at a one-night stand
But I still need love 'cause I'm just a man
These nights never seem to go to plan
I don't want you to leave, will you hold my hand?

Oh, won't you stay with me?
 'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love, it's clear to see
 But darling, stay with me

 Why am I so emotional?
No, it's not a good look, gain some self-control
And deep down I know this never works
But you can lay with me so it doesn't hurt

Oh, won't you stay with me?
 'Cause you're all I need
This ain't love, it's clear to see

Gonna stand my ground

So, if one were to approach one of your buffets with the intention of ensuring that the establishment lost money - what is the best plan of attack?

I generally avoid beverages, starches, and chicken.  I look for medium or bigger shrimp, and only large pieces of pork or beef that aren't ground.

Pretty much. Any of the meats that are hand cut are spendier. Roast beef, steak, etc and our "featured" entrees like prime rib orbutterfly shrimp. Anything in single serving containers has added cost as well. The easist way to get your money's worth is to get grab what is expensive, eat a couple bites and get a new plate every couple minutes.

You wouldn't believe how many people do that kinda stuff. Worst I ever saw was a dude pull up a chair to the buffet bar with his fork and knife and dig in. Manager kicked him out pretty quickly, but still something I never thought I would see.

I discovered a Chinese buffet in a neighboring town that had crab legs on the buffet on Sundays.
The buffet was all you can eat for $12.
I had cousins carpooling here from 2 hours away for the $12 all you can eat crab legs.
After three or four consecutive weeks of us showing up with a group of 6-10 and eating nothing but crab legs, they stopped putting them out.

Another story from a "country buffet":
Everyone got the buffet, but a guy that we were traveling with ordered a meal because he wanted it prepared fresh.
I watched as the waitress pulled everything for his order off the buffet.  :lol

Worst I've ever seen was two women load up bags full of pizza slices at Cici's.  The manager stopped them at the exit and told them they couldn't leave with the food.  They went back to their table and ate one bite out of each slice and left the pile.  Dozens of slices.

Worst stunt I ever pulled was planted in my head by an alumni who heard I was headed to A&M.  I lined my empty backpack with a thick plastic bookstore bag and went to the buffet at Double Dave's pizza.  Their peproni rolls freeze and reheat exceptionally well.  Good to know when you have to store 72 of them.  That's the one and only time I did something like that.

Dude, I am impressed.  Wow.

St. Louis has a section of excellent Chinese restaurants.  Which is odd given how bland their regional cuisine is (and fattening, jesus.  I crested 300lbs and actually LOST WEIGHT in San Antonio).

Anyway, I went to some $15 buffet and the manager brings out his crispy duck and beams with pride as he admires it on the steam table.  I lift up the edge of the tray and slide the whole thing onto my plate.  I sincerely think that guy was right on the edge of taking a swing at me and he spent the next 20 minutes watching me steadily eat the entire thing.  They didn't bring out any more.  :D

EDIT: And to be clear (after checking out Vigo's link), this was not a chain restaurant affiliated with Vigo's company.  It was an independent place serving "country" style food.
They went out of business a couple years ago.

I figure since the dust is starting to settle, I better give an update of what has been going on at my work. The good news is, we were too big for the buyers to absorb us overnight, and I still have a job. They deal was closed last Wednesday, and a half hour later, they started walking people out the door.  Half my office is gone, and most all of our south Carolina office is gone as well, SC will soon to be eliminated as soon as everything is cross trained. Almost every position of remote power has been eliminated from our company. We also have massive gaps in our infrastructure from layoffs. Most of us are just doing daily tasks while trying to get a grip with what is expected of us. Our stores are doing the same.

My first real job out of college was working at Old Country Buffet corporate office.  That was before they moved to the Eagan location.  I didn't realize they were owned by Ovation as well?  At that time we would get 4 free passes to OCB every payroll (2 weeks).

Hope everything works out for you.

Kathi is still here, and probably only because she knows everything accounting related like the back of her hand. She is too valuable. Jim Bisek is a survivor as well. Ron Johnson and Linda Raw just got let go, I am guessing you remember them.

I come from the payroll dept. When I started, the company had grown quite a bit in size before things got hard. The people here are good, I hate seeing this all happen.

Hmm.. I was born in St. Paul and lived in Eagan for the first 6 years of my life.. I've also eaten at the Old Country Buffet when visiting my father in the Twin Cities.. I was amazed at how big it was, and the guy at the front door in a 3 piece suit who was coordinating seating everyone was impressive (from the standpoint of effectiveness) if not terribly overdressed for the establishment.  I worked at a buffet here in Billings, MT as a teen that was eventually bought by Old Country (or at least that was the name they changed to), but they went out of business about 15 years ago and were replaced by a Golden Corral.

The food here in central PA has to be equally bland.
They have an unseasoned version of everything that's good elsewhere.
I always feel weird when there is a group of people going on about how good something is when it tastes like flavorless matter to me.

I'm not complaining about a lack of spicy food.
Everything across the board lacks seasoning.

I've lived a lot of places and here's what I've noticed on the spicy:

St. Thomas - 1/5 full scotch bonnet hot sauce at every table.

College Station - one bottle of Tabasco that floats from table to table.

St. Louis - no hot sauce.  They might have an unopened expired can of jalapenos in the back.

San Antonio - Tabasco on every table at every restaurant.  No exceptions.  Maybe Cholula if they get enough weirdos from Arizona.

Houston - all the restaurants have Tabasco, Louisiana hot sauce, and Sriracha.  It's not on the table, they won't offer it, you'll have to specifically ask, and 50/50 they actually bring it to you before you give up and go find the cabinet yourself.

Title: Re: Re: The Summer 2015 Anti-Chuff Thread
Post by: dkersten on August 27, 2015, 12:59:28 pm
So here's my anti chuff for the summer.  It's a bit of a long story.

My son was not a good person for a while. He did a lot of things that he never got caught doing, but then he got busted and is paying the price.  He did a good job turning his life around, getting clean from drugs, getting into programs to help, getting a good job and doing so well the owner is promoting him like crazy.  He's been clean for nearly 2 years now, is serving his probation for his drug charges, and doesn't associate with the old crowd that kept him in that lifestyle.  He has been working really hard to get all his debts paid off and so far the charges have cost him over $15,000, of which he has paid off every dime.  He's what you would call a productive member of society who's just trying to get back on his feet so he can move forward with his life.

So about a year ago, he got off work and went to hang out with a friend in a parking lot that is commonly used for the younger crowd to hang out.  They were just sitting in his car and he fell asleep.  A cop saw him and he came up and woke him and then tested him for being drunk.  He hadn't had a drop and blew a zero-point-zero.  The cop was sure he was drunk because why else would someone with tattoos on his arms be asleep in his car at 11:30 pm on a Friday?  So he took him to the jail, tested him again.  0.0   He said since the breathalyzer wasn't working, he had to get transported to the hospital for a blood test.  This takes upwards of 24 hours, usually no less than 12 hours.  He had just started this new job and had to work at 9 am, he knew if he agreed to the blood test he would end up being held up until 3 or 4 pm the next day at the minimum.  So he declined.  They held him for another hour and did a third breath test.  Again a zero.  They then released him (it was 3 am).  His buddy was also charged but accepted the blood test.  He got released the next day at 5 pm.  He tested negative for alcohol.

My son was on a drug patch that will detect ANY drugs in his system, had been for nearly a year for his pending drug charges.  So there is proof he also wasn't on drugs.

So he asked for a public defendant and was assigned one.  At the first hearing in court, a new PD showed up and told him he was reassigned to a new lawyer.  That lawyer asked for a continuance.  It was put off for about 6 weeks.  In that time, my son called a dozen times trying to get a meeting with this new PD.  The guy never returned a call.  At the next hearing, my son spoke up and told the judge he had not met with this lawyer once because he could never get a call back.  The judge gave them another continuance.  For the next 8 weeks, same story, he called every day trying to get a call back and finally got one meeting with the guy.  He explained his side of the story and the lawyer said he would prepare a defense for not guilty.  A few weeks later he called and said he had to postpone again due to a conflict.  About 7 weeks later he finally got to court and the lawyer started telling the judge he would plea guilty.  My son spoke up again and said he wasn't guilty and that he told the PD lawyer he was going to fight this, and the judge got upset and said he would set a trial date and expected them to be ready (after dressing down the lawyer).  They finally met and went over everything and the lawyer said it was all good, easy case, etc.

So a couple months later my son was travelling for work.  He had scheduled this with the lawyer 5 weeks in advance and even told the judge he would be out of town, signed the waiver for the right to a speedy trial, etc.  (it had been some 7 months now already).  While he was out of town, the bail bondsman called and said he had missed his court date and he needed to get back to town and get into court or they would put him back in jail.  He ended his work out of town early and came back to town and went to see the lawyer.  The guy lied and said he just missed the date because he thought it was 2 weeks later.  Turns out he showed up to court and told the judge my son just failed to appear.

So he had a bench trial rescheduled for yesterday.  Last Friday my son got a call from the public defenders office saying he was reassigned a new PD lawyer.  Usually this means months of delays again, but he met with this woman immediately and she went over everything in the file.  There were forms he should have signed along the way that were not done, and the whole story of what the last lawyer was doing came out.  They got their ducks in a row and this lawyer said she could be ready for Wednesday's trial.

So they showed up at 1 pm for the trial yesterday.  The trial ended up starting at 6 pm.  The judge listened to the evidence, then heard testimony from the cop, who was certain that despite the evidence showing my son was sober, he was a professional and just KNEW when someone was drunk.  The judge decided that since the police officer was a professional, he was right and the breathalyzer was wrong and my son was lying.  Since he declined the blood test, he found him guilty.

So, if a cop says you're drunk, you're drunk.  PERIOD.  Doesn't matter if it's been a weeks since you had a drink and the breathalyzer shows a zero.  Doesn't matter that you would lose your job if you were detained for 24 hours while waiting on a blood test.  Either you lose your job and prove you didn't have a drink or you get nailed with a DUI.

My faith in the legal system is gone.  I have a sheriff buddy who told me straight up that some cops take on a personal "mission" to bust as many people for DUI as they can, and they don't care if they were drinking or not.  All they care about is their tally at the end of the month.  It's a competition among some of them.  I'm sure this cop was having a few beers with his fellow officers celebrating another "win" last night.  He really stuck it to this punk kid with tattoos on his arms and a record.

Now, all that being said, my son DID do some stuff that he never got caught for, so you could call this karma or whatever.  But if the whole purpose of the legal system is to reform and "correct" people's behavior, it failed.  He was already doing everything right.  He had already left that life behind and was paying the price.  Now he has another bill to add to the pile, and it will now be several more months (if not years) before he can successfully become debt free and be able to afford to live on his own and remain a productive member of society.  He had spent several weeks in a drug/alcohol program that he completed (at a cost of $3500, only $800 of which was covered by his medical insurance) to get his license back and cover the requirements of his drug charges.  Now he has to do the EXACT program all over again.  He literally just finished the program a couple months ago, and the DUI charge was from almost a year ago.  But that doesn't matter because the judges get a kickback from the program, so it isn't about whether the treatment works, it's about the judge getting paid.

Sadly, if he had known the judge would ignore the evidence and just go with what the cop wanted, he could have plead it out a year ago and been done with it.  Now he lost his license for another 6 months and can't even get a probationary license for 30 days.

My experience with the legal system in the past two years has taught me a lot.  I have had conversations with several people involved directly with trying to help people get back on their feet after getting busted for drugs and cleaning up (lawyers, people who monitor parolees and those out on bail, etc.)  Some people within the legal system here (cops, judges, etc.) have a racket going, and they make kickbacks from every part of it.  The goal is to keep people in the system as long as possible.  Arrest them for something like Minor in Possession or Public Drunkenness.  Then there's a company that handles 100% of the District court drug and alcohol cases.  No choice, you have to use this company.  Of course, the judges get a kickback from this company.  Community service - you have to pay.  Yup, it costs money to do community service.  Then you have to do an evaluation with a psychologist, and you can't pick the doctor, THEY pick them (who happens to work for this company).  That costs you another $350.  Then that doctor will tell you that you are an addict and need a drug and alcohol rehab program.  There's only ONE place you can do that program too, and it costs $2500 for the basic program.  Often that doctor will tack on others, like if you have ever been to a casino, you're also a gambling addict, so that's another program.  And the rehab clinic.. guess who owns it?  The judges.  One is in jail already, but the rest evaded the racketeering charges and still own the clinic.  There's other clinics that have that program (as well as churches with certified counselors who could do the program), but you can't use those if you are convicted in District court, only if you are convicted in City court or Federal court.  Once you finish, they try to nail you on something, get you back into court, and then get you back into jail so you have to start all over again.  Oh, couldn't pay the $1500 fine in 3 months?  Back to jail, start over, a new fine, another charge to do community service, another evaluation for $350, and another round of therapy for $2500.  Can't afford it?  Back to jail you go!

It makes me sick!

So, that's my big downer for the summer.  I was positive the charges would be dropped once a competent lawyer presented his case properly.  He had other charges that he was guilty of (driving without insurance) and he was prepared to pay the price on those.  But this DUI was BS, he wasn't drinking and he stood up for himself only to learn that it doesn't matter.  Did he deserve it based on the things he didn't get caught for?  Maybe, and frankly he could be in prison with the other people he used to run with, but he got out before the hammer came down on them, so despite this setback he's still better off than he could have been.  But it still pisses me off.

Frankly, an appeal would end up costing $10-30k in legal fees.  It isn't worth it.  For $5-8k I could have hired my lawyer to handle his case and he might have gotten him off, but again, the cost isn't worth the result.  The worst part (aside from the drivers license) is he might lose his insurance, and that is already high due to his age and low credit score.  But the rest is financial mainly and it will cost less to just eat it than to fight it.  They count on this sort of thing.

In fact, when charged with something you know is BS, the best thing to do is to ask for a jury trial.  Trials cost the system money, jury trials cost a lot of money, and in the end this isn't about stopping people from breaking laws, it's about money.  They bust you for driving 40 in a 35 it's not because it's unsafe, it's because they can get you for a $150 fine.  If tickets were about safety or enforcing the laws because it's the right thing to do, they wouldn't cave nearly 100% of the time when you are going to cost them more than they want to fine you for.

And get this: if someone steals from you and you catch them and press charges, when you win the case in court the city, district, state, etc. will levy a fine.  Guess who gets paid back first?  Until that fine is paid, you don't see a penny of restitution.  It isn't about righting a wrong, it's about money.

I think a lot of it has to do with the metrics bureaucrats want to measure law enforcement performance by.
Base a teacher's performance evaluation on how students do on a test, teachers will focus only on the test.
Judge law enforcement job performance on number of arrests, and more people who weren't bothering anyone will be arrested over trivial stuff.

On top of that, they'll go for the low hanging fruit that doesn't require as much of their time so they can get more arrests.
You can't get any simpler than checking pockets for drugs.  Not much to dispute or haggle over in court there.
Harsher sentences are a judges bread and butter for their next election campaign.

Although incarceration rates are at an all time high, arrests for violent crimes that actually require an investigation are way down.
If you're murdered in the United States, there is a 1 in 3 chance nobody will be arrested for it.  That is down from 1 in 10.
With all the added technology, you'd think the number of murderers identified and arrested would be going up.

There was an early episode of The Andry Griffith Show where Barney Fife runs around arresting everyone in town for minor infractions to show how good of a deputy he is.
That's pretty much the current state of things in my mind.

This doesn't apply everywhere, just where number of calls and arrests weigh heavily on evaluations.

EDIT: Oh and private companies getting $50k/year per inmate surely doesn't help either.  And of course the less you spend (unless it's billable to the state), the higher your profit.

Oh, forgot to mention also.. that new Fridge I bought 4 weeks ago already ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- the bed.  Fan sounds like a single prop plane taking off and when you open the freezer drawer it's like that commercial where the couple is trying to talk in front of their refrigerator but can't hear each other.  And the ice maker is now down to making about 9 cubes per day (12 if I turn on fast ice but then I also get water down the front of the ice bin.)

Good thing I spent $2500 for a brand new product!  (and it looks like that 5 year warranty will come in handy too).

After getting a $300 utility bill I figured today is the day to fix the leaky bathtub faucet..

1.50 seat and couple .79 washers.

Easy right?

Curb key
Faucet puller
Set of stem wrenches
Seat wrench

That'll be damn near 80 bucks sir.

Meh, cheaper than a plumber.

Whirlpool.  A buddy who owns an appliance repair place told me they have the lowest rate of failure of all brands.  Guess I just have crap luck.

There's a "lemon" clause in the policy that says if I have to have it repaired too much they will just replace the whole thing, but I will have to read the fine print to find out if I can qualify.  In that case, yes, it would be chufftastic, but even this repair was a pain in the butt to arrange and they told me outright if the guy shows up and it's something I could fix on my own, they will charge me for it.

That's what happened with the LG dryer I bought not too long ago..  Needed a second dryer (lots of laundry in my house, lol) and I wanted to get a steam feature.  The one I picked out doesn't connect to the tap, it just has a reservoir you fill up.  The salesman told me it's an advantage because I can use filtered water so I don't clog up the nozzles with our hard water (or get stinky clothes from the smelly water).  So I did but it ended up filling up the dryer with a gallon of distilled water.. not exactly good.  I called in and asked and they sent a repair guy out.  He tore the thing apart and then called LG and they said "You HAVE to use tap water, the sensor that determines if water is flowing uses electricity, and hence you need the minerals in the water for it to work"..  They tried to charge me for the visit but I told Sears to bill the salesman who told me to use filtered water.

Word.  I lived in a house for a couple of years and it was the same size.  $475 for heating bills.
My power bill averaged $280 when I was married..  When I got divorced and kicked her out, even with kids living with me 50% of the time my power bill dropped to $70.  ---smurfette--- sucked the energy right out of the house, lol.

This past year with all 3 kids back at home full time, it crept up into the $200 range before I put the hammer down on lights and TV's being left on.  However, in the summer up here in Montana at 3000 feet elevation it gets into the 100's often, and when you have 100+ days for weeks in a row, AC never stops.. My house was built in the 60's, and the exterior walls are 2x4, not 2x6, and the main living space is all vaulted ceilings with little insulation, so yeah, the bill jumps up to $300.  But gas is separate, and in the winter it hits around $300, in the summer it's only $20-25 but I use budget billing so it's around $100 every month.  Water is also separate, and that's up to around $60 because they took $10 per month off property taxes and moved it to the water bill (sewage tax) so the politicians could say "See, we lowered your taxes!".  Irony is the taxes went down an average of $70 per year, but water bills went up $10 per MONTH.

All in, I average around $300 per month, upwards of $450 for a 2500 sq ft house (2800 if you count the game room, but that's well insulated and even if the AC and heat are running it barely uses $15 per month).  Add the $200 cable bill and things get a little ugly..

Oh, the city just passed a new ordinance to re-evaluate home values for taxes every 2 years.  Nearly everyone in our city saw a mil hike of over 20%.  Try telling the bank or the realtor your house is worth 20% more this year compared to last year, lol.  See, the school district just got a 250 million dollar mil levy passed 2 years ago and are already coming up short after spending it all on new schools (now they want more teachers, which they didn't tell all the idiots who voted for the mil that it wasn't included), and then last year they tried to pass a new mil for more law enforcement and a new jail, which failed.  So they just increased the value of everyone's home by 20% and they got the extra money they wanted.  Brilliant huh..

Accounting.  I started as a restauran accountant, and then moved on to a staff accountant.  Was there for 5 years or so.  You were there in Eden Prairie?  I worked for Kathy Schmieg as a staff accountant. I remember a lot of people from there.  Still have some friends.

I started after the move to Eagan. Been with the company almost 10 years. I bet we know a lot of the same people.

Weathered two bankruptcies, but this has been much harder to deal with. The people here are good, I hate seeing this all happen.
Yep..knew both Jim and Linda...what about Brad Thill and Tye Card?

At 6 am this morning my cell phone rings.. I don't get up until about 6:45, so I groggily answer.  It's the service guy for the fridge, asking me to verify my address.  I asked why he was calling so early.  He said the apt was set for between 8 and 10..
yeah, it's 6 am.
No, it's 8 am.
Uh... Where are you?
Michigan..
Uh, yeah, I'm in Montana
he reads off the address.. got the street right, and the city and state started with the right letters, but otherwise they missed the mark by about 1500 miles.
So at 8 I call the place Lowes scheduled for me.  They don't service Montana.  So I call Lowes back.  Oops, sorry, we got your zip code wrong so it went to the wrong service company.

Got it rescheduled for tomorrow, so one more friggin day listening to the airplane in my kitchen.  I mentioned to the Lowes guy that most of the food in my freezer was thawed out, so he sent me the form for claiming food loss (part of the warranty).  Gotta provide receipts.  Who keeps their grocery receipts until after the food is eaten?  It's in the freezer so it will last for weeks and months.. So now I gotta go back and find receipts (I haven't emptied the trash next to my nightstand and all that's in there is receipts I throw out every night, so I probably have some I can use.)  Guess I will be getting the max $250 back since I can find receipts for that much frozen food from the last 35 days since I bought the fridge.  Downside is there really is some food that is closer to refrigerator temp than freezer temp, even though the freezer is set to -3 degrees.  It's still cold enough to not go bad, but once a frozen pizza thaws out that much you're better off throwing it out.  The expensive stuff (frozen meat) is in the bottom drawer, and that stuff is still frozen solid, but I suppose it will have thawed out as far as they know.

After 2 out of 3 years of record snowfall, I just want a regular winter.. A few inches of snow every week or two and never below -10F.  When we get 120 inches of snow that lasts for 5 months straight with several -35F days I start to wish the 90+ degree days would last a little longer.  These days I am happy if we get more than a week of Spring and Fall weather (75 in the day, 50 at night).  Seems to go from -10 one day to 90+ the next.

Ah, ---fudgesicle--- it...

Your cruel device,
 Your blood like ice.
 One look could kill,
 My pain, your thrill.

I wanna love you, but I better not touch (don't touch)
I wanna hold you, but my senses tell me to stop
I wanna kiss you, but I want it too much (too much)
I wanna taste you, but your lips are venomous poison

You're poison runnin through my veins
You're poison, I don't wanna break these chains.

 Your mouth, so hot
 Your web, I'm caught
 Your skin, so wet
 Black lace on sweat

I hear you callin and it's needles and pins (and pins)
I wanna hurt you just to hear you screaming my name
Don't wanna touch you, but you're under my skin (deep in)
I wanna kiss you, but your lips are venomous poison

Yeah, I can't say I blame him. He felt like his comments tended towards the negative, given that he was a straight shooter and he wanted to cut that out.

Still,  I'll miss his honest feedback, especially when things get circle jerky.

I don't even look at the hardware end of the hobby anymore.  All projects fall into two categories.  Cabs so well done with so much money thrown at them it makes me feel bad about myself or cabs that are so bad or poorly designed that the creators should be ashamed to let them see the light of day.  The middle fell away a long time ago.

I think unless we are talking restoration or recreation, the whole "mame cab" thing doesn't appeal to me anymore.  I don't mean that having a mame cabinet doesn't appeal to me, I just mean the design aspect.  At this point I just pick a design that'll work well for what I want it to do, build it really well and put a nice coat of paint on it.  Sideart and blinky buttons and what-not.... eh... I just want to play games.

That isn't to say I can't appreciate a really well done cab, it's just the wisdom of being around here since the beginning has taught me that spending 500 dollars on sideart isn't the best idea considering in a few years the technology will radically change and you might have to scrap the whole thing anyway.  I mean the whole switch from 4:3 to 16:9 monitors really threw me off.  I always thought pc monitors would be 4:3 because for computing it makes more sense.... but I guess cost won.  Also this trend to put Japanese controls on everything... I'm still resisting that one, but I think eventually we may not have a choice.

That too, Howard. Gimme a great looking restoration anyday. Spyridon's threads here are what really caught my eye. Otherwise, I'd have a X-Arcade Tankstick and call it a day. But Spyridon's restorations inspired (---fudgesicle---, I'm starting to hate that word) me to really tackle fixing up dedicated machines.

How come jamma gotta be so expensive

You know, that's probably the only aspect of this hobby I got in on the right side of.  I started buying JAMMA boards 2000-2001 and paying more than about $25 shipped was 'expensive' for a lot of them.  I mean, some games were ALWAYS expensive relative to the others, but more than $75ish for anything was fairly rare.  Flipped all those things a year or so later and cleared hundreds in profit.  Now when I stumble across them on ebay there's no way I could afford them.  Bad Dudes for $100+?  I paid $19 shipped for that.  Oh well, it funded the MAME set up and probably paid rent one month.

Yeah, there are still deals to be found, but rarely are you going to find them on eBay. Your best bet is to pick up untested boards and hope you got a good one. That happened to me with a Yie Ar Kung-Fu board. $30 shipped, works perfectly. Whew! But most of the boards I buy are from KLOV.

Most I paid for a board was like $150 for Macross, and that was shipped from South Korea. Now that board is at least $200 or GTFO. And you want a Macross Plus board? At least 3 bills on eBay.

This is what private facebook groups are for..

Whenever a forum dies (or turns into something a lot of users don't like) and a bunch of "internet friends" want to stick together, someone ends up starting one and eventually all the old "regulars" end up getting invited through someone.  It's kinda nice, right up until all the old issues that made them abandon the original forum start cropping up again, lol.

I never understood the CNC thing. I mean... it's a box. Unless you're cutting ten of them, a CNC just means you spend more time at the computer and less time building the thing. Might as well make an IKEAcade. Oh wait... IT'S BEEN DONE!

It's a cynical view on life, but the fact is, bad stuff WILL happen in your life.  Nobody makes it to the end unscathed.  And the longer you go without hardship, the more difficult it is to deal with when it happens.  I think you have the right attitude in calling it a challenge, because that means you have the ability to overcome it.

In the grand scheme of things, the only thing that can't be overcome is death, and eventually we will ALL succumb to that one.  There is ALWAYS someone who has it worse off than you (well, other than the one sorry soul who has it worse than anyone - there's always a last place.)  Remembering those things can help you get through even the toughest challenges.

You didn't just overcome a frustrating situation that was bringing you down, you turned it into a win.  This should be in the other thread.  :)

I thought the thread, for the most part, was a real downer. And I have no idea how to remove threads from my "New Replies" section. This incident was a downer, but I chose to turn it around. If anything it was more of a metaphor, (it really happened, but I was also trying to make a point).

I guess it could go in either thread, or half in each. Why not add a few flowers to the junkyard?

Yeah, the whole IPA thing is over around there thankfully.  The place close to my house makes very drinkable stuff.
I drive new bartenders crazy by ordering stuff by what it actually is.
"I'll have a wheat beer and the chicken sandwich"
They go to the POS machine, don't see anything labeled "chicken sandwich" and then look at the menu.
Hardly any of the goofy names make enough of a reference to the actual food that you could figure it out.

The area where I live is so saturated with micro-brews that I view the beer no differently than anything else on the menu.
It's no different than two places selling cheeseburgers.  One might be better than the other, but really it's just a cheeseburger.
If I'm in the mood for a cheeseburger, I can get one at either place.  I'm not ordering one based on it having a clever name.

EDIT:  The beer pictured above was brought to me by a friend who absolutely buys beer based on clever names.
The last thing he brought me was some kind of "walking dead" beer.

I've just about hit my limit on "whimsical" craft beers.  I've thoroughly enjoyed this fad and have had many delightful brews... but it's done.  Time to put away the clip clop double bock triple ipa cider and go back to Shiner for a few years.
Craft beers becoming too "mainstream" for you?  You loved it when only you and a handful of others knew about it, but now that everyone's doing it, it's "so yesterday".. ?

I have accepted the fact I am a bona fide hipster and come to peace with it long ago.

After 10 years of craft beers, I'd just like some regular stuff for a change.  I was in a total dump of a bar last week and the taps were Bud Light, Miller Light, and Sam Adams Rebel IPA.  I mean, wtf.  What do you even do with that.  That's "never mind, I'd rather have some water" territory.

The craze will end, the market will normalize.  Remnants of the improved tastes and enhanced selections will remain.  We're all better off for the experience.  Don't worry, your grubby flyover town will be right there with me in 3-4 years.

I went to see a friend fill in with a different band on Saturday night.
Got $60 out of the ATM for the evening.
$2 cover, drank $2 miller lite pounders, got a couple 2/$1 hot dogs on the way home.
When I get home, I'm shocked to discover that I still have $46 in my wallet.

This made me reflect on my $35-60 evenings at the brew pub, but the thought passed quickly.

Wow - that's hella cheap for a night at the pub.  Kinda jealous.

As the summer comes to a close, one final "F U" from the Anti Chuff dept.  It got chilly the other night, so I fired up my furnace.  I replaced it about 8 years ago, although it feels like a year or two ago.  To me it's still my "new" furnace.  It came on, then turned right off and then the air blew cold for a few minutes.

So I called a local HVAC guy and of course he wanted $150 to come out on a weekend.  He figured it was the flame sensor, and sure enough, the flame sensor read bad.  He cleaned it up and it was metering perfectly, except it was still only running the gas for about 5 seconds before stopping.  After a half hour of tinkering he announced the control board was bad on it.  Of course, they didn't have one in stock, so I ended up having to wait until Monday anyway.... So much for the $150 weekend service call.

So the board is $457.  I already owe $150 and now it will cost more to install it.  The guy who called me actually said maybe it's time for a new furnace... WTF!!  I mean, sure, it is older than I think, but my last one was 30 years old when I replaced it.  "Well," he says, "You are already a quarter the way to a new furnace with repairs..." FFS, this should be under warranty still, and I'll be damned if I'm going to replace the whole thing again!

Am I just getting old and feeling the years slipping past too fast?  I seriously feel like this thing was installed just a couple years ago, maybe 5, but even so why do I feel like a $6500 furnace and AC should still be practically brand new after only 8 or 9 years?

And WTF is with all my damned appliances failing suddenly?  Last year it was cars.. 2 engines and a transmission along with a dozen other repairs that totaled well over $10k.  This year I'm somehow replacing appliances that aren't that old.  Granted, aside from the fridge I am replacing the rest just to match, but damn, first the fridge, then the water line, then the furnace....

Yesterday me and my son and my girlfriend walked through the house and I explained all the things I WANT to do in each room.  It took over two hours just to go through each room and point out what projects I had in mind.  I am sure it will be around $30k to do them all, which is why they have been projects on the back burner for ten years.  Thing is, most of the stuff I did 10 years ago is already needing a refresh.  And this is all if I do it myself, if I hire it out, which I might have to since my back is getting so bad, it would be twice as much or more.

I start to see why people want to buy new construction homes that are completely move in ready, even if it means being in a townhouse or duplex with a hundred square feet for lawn and your neighbor's window seven feet from yours.  I can't even imagine what it is like owning an older home if you aren't handy and in good health.  I suppose that is why you find so many houses on the market that are just dumps and need more work than the house is worth to make habitable.

Anyway, I almost made it out of Summer without another blow, but the Naff caught me at the last second.

Do you do the yearly maintenance on your furnace? Change the filters as required etc? If it's just a "control board" isn't that usually a circuit board with a few ribbon cables coming off of it? It might be something you can do yourself.

Was considering replacing my 30 year old furnace which still works fine.
You've convinced me not to fix what isn't broke.

Post by: dkersten on September 21, 2015, 02:32:52 pm
Yeah, I do the maintenance.  It's easy to swap but I already paid for the guy to be there on Saturday, so the $30 more dollars for him to come out and swap it in isn't a big deal.  Plus if the board doesn't work, this way I'm not liable for buying it.  It's always good to have someone you can point the finger at and say "He did it."

I might see if I can get a hold of the guy who installed the thing originally.  He can get the board at a discount and even put it in, but I will still owe the $150 for having a guy show up and not do anything.

That guy that "didn't do anything" also wasn't able to go do something else while he was dealing with your walking catastrophe ass.

That guy that "didn't do anything" also wasn't able to go do something else while he was dealing with your walking catastrophe ass.
I agreed to pay the $150 for him to drive to my house, spend 5 minutes testing then cleaning the flame sensor before declaring it wasn't the problem, then another 10 minutes staring at the control board before calling his boss and asking a couple questions then telling me he couldn't fix it and he would call back on Monday.  If they charge me the full amount, I will pay it, but I won't be happy about it.

BTW, the $457 part costs $125.  I had the guy who sold and installed the furnace check on it and he will have the part here tomorrow.  The downside is if the $150 diagnosis is wrong I am stuck with a $125 board I don't need and still have to fix it.  The upside is there is only 4 parts that can really go bad on these, one is the igniter and one is the valve, both work fine.  The third is the flame sensor, and that costs about $20, so worst case scenario the guy who charged me $150 to come by on a Saturday morning got his diagnosis completely wrong and it will STILL cost me 70% less than it would have to have him fix it.

was getting down to 45 degrees on Thursday and Friday.. Back up to 80 today, but this is Montana, it could snow tonight and be -30 tomorrow, lol.

Friday morning it was about 55 down in my basement, and that was just chilly enough to turn the heater on.  Glad I did though, would suck if I waited until the first freeze and then found I had no heat.  If it had been that cold, that HVAC place would have charged me $1500 and then told me I have a leak in the heat exchanger and insisted I replace it..  lol.

It's still pretty hot here.  I wore shorts today at least.

The old furnaces work better and last longer... definitely don't replace it until it breaks.  We got an industrial unit from my grandmaw's house and it doesn't heat/cool as well as the old one did and it was half busted!

So I got the dash on my car halfway presentable and I was ready to take the car to paint.... now the speedo dies and the door buzzer is coming on when you turn the lights on.  Ugh...old cars.

I was informed today that my bosses have sold the company and new owners are taking over next month.
Not sure if I'm chuffed or anti-chuffed since I hate my job anyway.
I'd always hoped they'd just close up shop and I could collect unemployment for a while.

I'm anti-chuffed at the moment because I got the structural issues on my house taken care of just yesterday, and I was getting ready utilize a personal line of credit to remodel the bathroom which is already halfway gutted.  :-\
Now I'm not so sure I want that extra debt/payment.

At the moment, the feeling I have is that I'm going to tell the new bosses to go ---fudgesicle--- themselves over the terms of the employment agreement.

After 6 years in a leadership pseudo-supervisory role at a company I've been with for 12 years I have to go back to production Thursday in what feels a whole lot like a demotion.

Why didn't I become an engineer....  Oh yeah Physics....

And really I do need another job, one that pays like 100k a year to build arcade machines, drink PBR, and tell people why their arcade machines suck.

I'm pretty sure it does.  Ever seen Angry Video Game Nerd?  It's pretty much the console version of this job.   Now if I could just get that time machine finished so I can go back to when it was possible to be an emerging youtube celeb I'd be good to go.

I'm pretty sure my wife and I narrowly avoided being gang raped by bisexual swingers last night.  I'm not sure which one of us got touched more.  That flamboyant guy in the custom made half unbuttoned shirt that's down to party at the bar and sure likes stroking your back and squeezing your arm?  His friends show up and they're just like him.

When it got down to, "what's it going to take to get you to come with me to this little private club down the block...." = GTFO.  NOW.

Pork brisket. Cheap.  Huge.  I'm intrigued, so I buy it.

Turns out when they destroy ribs by making them St. Louis style, they've got to do SOMETHING with the good part they lopped off.  So they creatively bundle them and sell it to idiots like me.

Ho hum.  I'll be eating this while the Cowboys lose.

Boss gave me a stack of employment papers to fill out for the new owners and then left for the day....W4, citizenship verification, etc.
So I'm supposed to have these filled out by tomorrow, but I don't even know the name of the company I am now employed by?!?.  ::)

I'll go along with it until they put a non-compete clause or anything else I'm not going to sign in front of me.
As far as I'm concerned, if the company I was working for last week doesn't exist anymore than the non-compete clause they have on file is null.

If I lived by you, I would buy you a drink, brother! Don't expect the circus to end anytime soon.

My boss just put in his notice last week, so if I don't get fired as part of the fallout, I won't have a department or a boss. It will be an interesting situation how it will play out, because my office doesn't have authority to assign me to a new department, and the buyers don't have any experience in my realm of work, and they mostly don't even acknowledge that I exist. I could very easily end up like Milton from Office Space.
