Title: High Score Competition #173: Kamikaze
Post by: popsicle on August 25, 2015, 12:15:28 am
High Score Competition Rules and Scoreboard (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,143138.0)

-----------------------------
Game Name :   Kamizake
ROM Name  =   kamikaze
-----------------------------

I remember playing an Astro Invader at a local convenience store when I was a lad.  Apparently, Kamizake by Leijac was first (1979) in Japan.  There is a difference in the dip settings for points needed for extra life between these two versions, but aside from that I don't know if they differ.  Either way, let's use the kamikaze rom. Oh, and it uses "invaders" sound samples. This  (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=76552.0)thread talks about the game a bit.

Move left, move right, and fire.  Get in to the groove!

Last day: Sunday, Sept. 6th 2015 midnight Pacific

From the 'Astro Invader' Wiki :

"Even the point value of the saucers can be exploited if the player has the patience to count his/her shots; the player obtains the maximum 400 points by shooting a saucer with his 15th shot fired, and with every 16th shot fired thereafter. Like the saucer pattern, the shot count also resets when the player's ship is destroyed."

Quote from the Twin Galaxies forum :

"Played a clone of this in a MAME comp recently and I thought this game was absolutely horrible. Kudos for being able to play it for more than 1 minute :D"

Hmm I get 800 points every 15/16th shot though. Guess that is just the kamikaze difference.

I can't get this working to save my life.  I get the first 800, then try for 16th shot for next saucer...get 100.  Rhythm off, can't find it again.  Do you start counting again after shooting the saucer, trying to hit the next saucer on '16', or is always your 16th shot, no matter if you've pegged a saucer or not?  Are missed shots still counted, or only ones that find targets?

Figured it out.  Count your shots always, no matter what you hit, and even between 'phases'. Still easy to get off by one, getting 100 in the thick of battle.

Could the mothership move any slower?  :banghead:

This is when you grab a swig o' ale. You don't even have to rush to put it down.  Savor it.

I know this is just a space invaders knock off, and I thought as much as a kid.  Seemed like a b-movie video game, even back then.  But there is something mesmerizing about it today that when I see it go by in my game list I have to give it a go. Unlike the impending doom of the invaders landing in Space Invaders I always feel like, if I really try, I can dig myself out of the hole and make a recovery when things get really frantic.  Of course it's only a matter of time before you are overwhelmed, but the hope is still there.

Quick and dirty.  ;)

Aside from the space theme I don't see any comparison between this and Lunar Lander. No capisce.  Are you drinking your homemade Kahlua again?  Stop that, you'll go blind.

Ah, Lunar Rescue.  Still I don't see much of a comparison to this invaders variation.

Lunar Rescue is fun though.  Future pick!

Finally figured out that it is the 15th shot that needs toit the ship the first time and then the16th shot each ship after that for the 800 point bonus (was hitting on 15th shot and thought I was miscounting for a while !) -- 11,330

Now just need to get the timing down and avoid the stupid explosions !!

I've found...
* If you get off count for the saucer on shot 16, hit him on 12 for 400 points, then ease back into 16.
* I've had better luck overall shooting one or two in each but every row than trying to clear out a bunch in one or two rows.
* Try to work on the side that the aliens are not currently filing in to unless it's an emergency.
* Saying the number of the shot you just fired out loud each time the mother ship interrupts you makes your wife think she married Rain Man.  8. Definitely 8.

I kept trying but I just couldn't do it.  :'( How you managed to pull of this score is beyond me popsicle  :applaud:

After counting shots for over an hour and then finally giving up and switching to another activity, I still felt the need to "count" whatever I was doing. ---goshdarn---  :banghead:
