Title: Which is easier to setup?
Post by: sleong on August 24, 2015, 08:00:05 pm
Hello all,

I just want to see what some of you think would be easier to setup.

A PC emulated cabinet or JAMMA boards?

This does not include the cabinet building.  I have thought of putting together a few cabinets back then and at that time jumped ahead of myself and picked up a Street Fight II board,  a 2 slot Neo Geo and 2 x 2 slot NeoGeo boards.  Then I put it off for a while and finally getting back into it. I've  some what put onebar top together ( still in the works) but i do not have any experience with JAMMA.

I do know with JAMMA i will be only limited to that game board compared with a PC with all the same games. Also in terms of perfomance which would run better?

Your thoughts and comments are welcome.

It depends what you want to play as well as what kind of monitor you're using. If you're using an arcade CRT, JAMMA would be easier. LCD?  Go with a PC.

I'm not allowed to pass judgement on people's choices anymore, remember?

What yotsuya said. Also is it for you or someone else? If for someone else then a JAMMA board.

It will most likely be a LCD monitor or maybe an old TV.  But more towards the LCD as it will be lighter weight and not as bulky.

It will be for myself.

If it were up to me, I'd scour CL for a non-working cab with a CRT monitor you can pickup on the cheap and use the original hardware in your own JAMMA cab.

However if you're sure you are going the LCD route, you probably should just sell the hardware and use the money to do a nice MAME setup...

Just don't build a four player LED/LCD monstrosity.

I agree with your points. But keep it positive, mofo!!!!

you're right bruh! Goldstar!

So I totally won't bring up the fact that a JAMMA cab with the button config needed to play both those boards would be a horrid compromise (assuming of course he got the NEO GEO's for Art of fighting etc).

Personally,  I've become intrigued by JAMMA stuff the past few years. Anything I build from here on out will probably be JAMMA.

Are there any Jamma boards that save high scores right out of the box? (Without a janky hack)

It depends on the board. My Macross, for example, doesn't save them, but I did an EPROM burn and added a chip for my Super Pac-Man that does, for example. NBA Jam saves records. I'm going to do a EPROM burn for my Rush'N Attack eventually.

I think I will build one with a PC and one for a JAMMA board.  Or maybe the NeoGeo since I have a few cartridges that I like playing and or others like.

I think most JAMMA harness has all wires pre connected on one end but if I was to extend or redo the wiring what kind of connectors do they use and with what tool to crimp them in?  This is for the harness since I have the quick connects for the buttons and joysticks.

I will try to find a CRT for the JAMMA  build.

BTW is it JAMMA  or is jamma or does it not matter?

In this timestream, it is JAMMA, but we are not gonna care if you don't hold down your shift key when typing it.
