First off I will start off that I am a complete newb in the world of arcade repair. Cosmetic is cake. Internal components not so much. I found a Galaga upright machine for a great price at a garage sale today. Owner let me know that the picture scrolled and the picture was off-centered and seems to show a doubled image. from the left and they did not know how to fix it. I have a cousin who did arcade repair in the 80's and 90's who I should be able to get to do my fixes (but he is always rushed on time), but I wanted the opinions of this board of what may be the problem so I can relay it to him. I noticed there are not pot adjustment controls to center it, so I don't want to risk any harm to myself or the machine.

1. is this a common problem?
2. would a cap fix do the job?
3. is this worth the cost of repair? (The cabinet has cracks in the overlay, side art is cracked)
a poor video showing whats going on is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjEefGnNaQc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjEefGnNaQc)
My other thought was that I could just gut the cabinet and mame it out and sell the internal components, which I do have experience with.
I got a little in over my head, after finding a nintendo red tent that I only needed to do a little wiring, and thought, "yeah, I can fix this too!"
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you PL1, I appreciate the pointers on my post.

Check your H-Hold and V-Hold to make sure it is not just a simple sync issue. Clean the edge connector with an eraser to make sure you have good contact with the harness and then test your +5V at the edge connector to see if it is close to +5V. I've seen Galaga do funny things when it is over or under powered.

+1 on checking the sync pots. If you post up a picture of the rear of the monitor (with the back door off) we can help you identify what type of monitor you have and where the sync pots would be on the chassis.
PS - Please don't gut the cab to MAME it, that is just a waste of a good classic cab.

Update: I cleaned the edge connector, and restarted, got a 4h Ram error on startup. reseated the ram, and we are in working condition. Now my convergence needs adjusting, which I'm reading up about. If anyone has any useful information on this, it would be much appreciated! Thanks to those of you who have given me suggestions. You are all brilliant!

Glad you got it working. Convergence = Pain and Suffering. If it isn't bad I would try to live with it. Google search for how to converge a monitor for more information and there are a lot of threads on this here and on KLOV. The G07 manual also has the full procedure. The first thing I would look at is if the rings on the neck look like they've been bumped or moved from their factory positions. There should be glue and/or a paint hash mark(s) where they were all lined up originally. But again, if isn't horrible leave it alone so you can enjoy playing a few games of Galaga first.
