What is the recommended setting for pc-tube television?  800x600?

Taking the time to read through this (http://easymamecab.mameworld.info/html/monitor1.htm) will explain why there isn't a simple answer to your question (other than 800 x 600 is the wrong choice for a standard television).

If using component native is 720x480 so i just stick with that & things look just fine to me.
With Svideo I think you should stick to whatever the video card wants to output which I believe is 640x480
