Title: First build
Post by: Haligonian on August 12, 2015, 10:35:43 pm
Just wanted to share the progress on my first build. It's a slim cabinet powered by a Raspberry Pi. The most recent picture is about 3 weeks into the build. All that's left is to install some trim (not t-molding unfortunately) and a scrolling LED marquee inspired by the Ikeakade project.

Why is it so tall?

That thing is BEGGING for a bigger screen mounted vertically.  The tallness of it makes it look like a shoot-em-up (SHMUP) cabinet.

Whoa. That is super slim. Remind me of my aunt Maude. She'd always look like a clothes hanger in a hat at weddings.

I don't think that's is too much taller than most other cabinets at 72". The fact that it's only 20" wide and 12" deep probably makes it seem taller. I wanted to use a screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio and that's the one I had laying around. It wouldn't be too difficult to switch it out for a larger one down the road.

It's a nice build, but a LOT of wasted space in my opinion. I understand the want for a 4:3, and it's your machine, so if you like it, that's all that matters in the end. Also, maybe it's me, but that control panel looks a bit small for two player.

+1  A vertical screen would be more appropriate in this cab.

Also, call me crazy but I don't even see P1's Joystick. It looks like P2's Joystick is nearly centered on the panel. Is P1's joystick behind the clamp?

EDIT: I've looked at the pictures even closer. I don't think this is even 2 player. Rather, just one player stuck on the right side. Am I right?

Could those all be Admin buttons on the left, and player buttons on the right? Me thinks so.

The controls are single player. I've included a close-up below. My original plan was for it to be two player but I didn't take into account the width of the joystick body and the supports for the control panel. As a result my original control layout wouldn't work in the space available. As a side note, the graphics for the controls were printed on 12"x18" photo paper at Costco (only $5.99!).
