I finally completed my first build, and I put in a nifty manual screen rotation. I give you, the nameless-for-now bartop (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,146678.0.html).
Anyway, I'm using mgalaxy as a front end because my computer is a weak Gateway laptop from 2005 and I needed something lightweight. Because of this, the screen orientation is set in each games settings, and the menu screen is always in landscape. This works fine, but when I have guests over, they HAVE to rotate the screen to go from things like pacman to joust. It's impossible to drop, and I designed it so no damage could be done by handling, but it still requires a lesson on how to operate, and that's more than I'm interested in giving at a party.
SO.... Here's the main question:
Is there a lightweight front end in which both the menu and the game can be rotated whenever I want via a button or key press?
The alien bartop I mentioned in my post did that with MaLa, but I can't tell if that's through a feature or a script he wrote, and the guy who built it hasn't been active in 2-3 years so I'm not hopeful for a reply to the pm I sent him. Any help is appreciated!

If you go mala- it hasn't been updated, yes, but it still works. the orientation of each game is read from metadata and a plugin by DaOldMan called (IIRC) Malaori tells it to switch between the horizontal and vertical layouts.

You can map a button in mala to switch orientation without any plugins.

Thanks, that's great news. Thank you both. I'll try that out as soon as I can assuming my computer can manage it.
