Title: Light Guns & MAME - How taxing on the hardware are these games on average?
Post by: gregor7777 on August 04, 2015, 10:47:53 pm
How taxing on the PC hardware are the lightgun games in MAME on average? Many of these are 3d and have higher end graphics for their times.

Would a 2.5ghz Dual Core Pentium and onboard video cut it? 4-8 gigs of ram, not that that matters much. I figure the CPU is doing the lion's share of the work like with most games.

Thinking about buying a lightgun at some point, curious if my PC is suitably equipped.

If you are talking 3D games CarnEvil, etc.. then you'll need more CPU. If you want to play less demanding ones like Duck Hunt, then you'll probably be ok. But, you'll have to test it out to see.

Depends on the specific games you're trying to run.
It will probably choke on 3D gmaes like CarnEvil & Time Crisis.
Older sprite based games like Terminator & Lethal Enforcers will work fine.

Virtua Cop and House of the Dead are playable with model 2 emulator.
You may need a 3D card for that depending on the onboard video.

Can you play them with a mouse? I want to try some game play before I commit to a gun.

yes.   the guns actually act like mice, pulling the trigger is like left clicking.
