Title: Whats the difference between a Happ Super and Competition?
Post by: leapinlew on August 02, 2015, 09:58:44 pm
I've primarily used supers and I'm not sure I know what the difference is between the two. The reason I'm curious is because I'm building a bartop and I like the color selections for the competitions more. What arcade games back in the day used competitions? Maybe I already know what they feel like. What I like about the supers is they have a good long not stiff throw.

Another thing, why are the competitions a little cheaper than the supers?

all the Mortal Kombats shipped with comps.

Supers have a shorter throw to hit the switches than the competition, and it also has a larger range to hit the diagonals (I think the comps are 10* and supers are 15*)

Comps can move and react far faster and easier than the Supers.   Supers are kinda Stiff and have a much heavier resistance.

Comps responses are very clear and defined.. and so theres no accidental diagonals when playing fighters .. for example.

Only problem with Comps... in the arcade, where games are played over 12 hrs 7 days a week... is that the sticks gets so much use that the plastic spacer will eventually wear down.  You will see plastic dust in the control panel.

After the spacer wears down enough... the stick will not function properly.  BUT... you can flip the spacer over, and use the other side of the spacer.     In a Home use setting... It may never be much of an issue for many many years of use.

I think the Supers were created differently to try to solve the wear issues...  however... people preferred the feel and control that the comps gave out... for most arcade machines.

Ultimates were the even earlier generation... and they were far worse with the wear issues.   Maybe two months of use,  rather than 6 to 8 months for the comps to need a spacer flip.   I believe the directional control was not as good as the comps either.  (Maybe a little too much throw.   Its been a very long time since Id messed with one)

I have used both and to me the Supers are easier with diagonals while the Comps feel more forced.
The Comps are much more durable and superior for most classic games.

What color supers are you looking for?

The differences are pretty simple:

The Super uses a round actuator, and switches with blades on them.  This allows for adjustment of the size of the dead-zone, diagonal actuation zones, and actuation sensitivity.  All three are affected simultaneously, so striking a balance between the three is necessary.  The actuators can also be flipped, to alter the range of adjustments possible.  Stock units are available only in a black bat.  There is also a leaf switch version available.

The Competition uses a square actuator, and blade-less switches.  There is no adjustment capability.  However, they are designed to be stronger in the cardinal directions, and less sensitive in the diagonals.  They are usually a good choice for the basic panel, expected to play 8-way, as well as 4-way games, reasonably well.  Their "out of the box" lower sensitivity in the diagonal zones, with the ability to still achieve them when desired, is what makes them attractive for multiple game type use.  They also come in colors.

Spring tension, durability, mounting methods and general feel, are on par with one another.

Personally, I like comps.
I've never used IL Euros but I hear they're actually better than Happ comps.

I have Super knockoffs on machine and the bat top is red. Works and feels just like a Super.
