Hi all
I am building a new cab but at the "pc configuration section" i burned the motherboard , and who knows what alse.
I am thinking of buying a motherboard with build in cpu.
ASROCK Q1900M.
The mobo has the intel j1900 processor.
Can this cpu handle MAME games?
Thanks in advance.
I can give graphics power to the mobo installing a GT730 gpu.

According to cpu benchmark single core of this processor is even slower than PIV 3,06 GHz so it will run some games but for example will not be sufficient for many taito_f3 games, segas32, namconb1, pgm
You can check my benchmarks - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,146276.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,146276.0.html)

How do you guys think the CPU below will fare? Highly likely I can't oc the MB it comes with. Typical Lenovo business setup.
Intel Pentium E5200 / 2.5 GHz ( Dual-Core ) (http://ark.intel.com/products/37212/Intel-Pentium-Processor-E5200-2M-Cache-2_50-GHz-800-MHz-FSB)

thank you haynor.
The games i like to play are not too "heavy" like nba jam , bubble bobble , TMNT , shinobi .....
I have watched the games that taito f3 has (at youtube) and no one of them are familiar to me. So its not bad to me to have a cpu which cant handled those games.
I have a question. What is better for mame. J1800 (2 cores 2.41ghz) or j1900 (4 coes 2.0ghz)
Isnt the gpu i mentioned (GT 720) do the things better? Or its all about cpu power?
-
For single core J1800 has 554 points so should be a bit faster for mame. Graphics it's not really important unless You are planning to use some effects.

So... if i got it right.
For MAME its not an advantage for the CPU if it has 2 or 4 cores. The thing that matters is the hz of the (one) core.
So a P4 3.2ghz is a good choice?

The CPU architecture plays a role as well. The P4 would be OK for many games, but it it isn't as fast a more modern CPUs even at a lesser speed.
-
The good choice is the fastest processor you can get or processor that serve your needs. on PIV many games can't be played at 100%, too many.

Not specific to your CPU question, but just an FYI. As the Mame devs more accurately emulate the hardware (discrete sound seems to be a big one) the CPU power to actually emulate the hardware keeps increasing. So, if you use an older version of Mame you will, probably, get more speed and thus need a less powerful CPU. But, if you plan on using the latest version, then a the same CPU that works for older version may not be able to run things at full speed on the latest build. Just food for thought.

until TK stops selling what he has, those PCs are the best bang for the buck.

A friend gave me a DELL optiplex 330 with a E2160 processor 1,8ghz.
What do you think. Is it ok for mame?
-
For performance, it depends on what year your retrogames stop. It will run fine until you get to 3-d fighters. Mortal combat might not work right either. I think there is an onboard video restriction there, it's not just the processor. CPS2, neo geo and of course the classics will all run fine.
For that computer I would be more worried about putting that time into set-up when it might crap out at any time. If the computer had light use maybe it's fine, but most of the optiplexes were corporate leases that got kicked around and had parts swapped out. At that time had motherboards and power supplies go bad frequently. If you do use it, I would set something up that isn't tied to the computer. I have an extrernal drive with a full hyperspin set-up. If I switch computers, it's fine for most games and the ones that don't work usually just need direct x installs.

Nice. I dont like 3d fighters (like Tekken) so it doesnt matter to me. I like bubble , shinobi , ssfii , toki etc.
You are right about the computer and its lifetime remaining. I will clean it up and i will do the double hard drive you recommended.
I will put a gpu like 6450 or 5450 hoping it will help with games like double dragon neon , treasure andenture game , maldita castilla , hydorah.
-
I tried the optiplex playing mame with frontend maximus arcade. The browsing between systems is a bit laggy.
I think that the gpu 5450 will help on that.
I tried playing nba jam , bomb jack , cadilacs and dinos and the emulation is fine.
Oh and also the optiplex is E2140 1,6ghz..... i think i will change the cpu with a E8400 which i read is compatible.
-
E8400 is much better than E2140
1322 points vs 655 points
