Title: Player 2 Button Layout in Mame
Post by: JamesS on January 03, 2004, 11:22:18 am
Ok this may be a stupid Question.  One that have been answered before, but I can not find it thru search.

What buttons are player 2 button 5 and 6?  Even Street Fighter has them listed as N/A and I would think you would need them for Street Fighter.  Maybe not.

Are there any games that use player 2 button 5 and 6?

Or do I have to remap?

I think my Keywiz uses I,K as buttons 5 and 6, but I see them as Movement controls.

Any help would be appreciated.

I & K are correct for MAME's P2 buttons 5 & 6, at least that is the default setting for most of the popular keyboard encoders.

By default MAME doesn't assign those keys, but you can set them globally through the config menu or use the .ini method.

That was fast and Thanks Oscar.  Still new to this whole thing.

But I have researched and started buying things, so hopefully soon to get started for real.

OK, I have the SAME question!!!! I even used the SEARCH function, to kee pfrom pi$$ing everyone off!!!!

Now my only question is: HOW do I change the INI file? Where is the ini file located? Remember to "Dumb it down" for me, for I have no experience in this arena of MAME...

The .ini file will be in the same directory as your executable.  If you're using MAME32 it will be generated automatically.  If you're using a different version (DOS or Windows command line) enter this on the command line:

mame -cc

'cc' stands for 'Create Config'

and it will make your .ini file for you.  Edit to tailor for your needs.

I don't want to sound ungrateful. I am using mame32, but do not see an ini file.

What needs to be written in the ini file? I can create one. I just don't know what to WRITE in it to make my p2 buttons 5 and 6 work!!!!

Press tab during a game for either mame32 or the commandline version and then you can change the keys for mame.

The commandline version is recommended for cabs because you can use it with other frontends like MAMEWAH.  I am told that the MAME32 build also differs in other ways from the commandline as well, ("it is an ugly hack," some people say).

The rest of the value in the ini file can be set through the MAME32 windows menus so no ini file is necessary.

I am all about doing it correctly (A non-ugly way...)

what do I need to put in the commandline of mame32?

I am going to try the TAB method first. Thank you one and all!

I don't think MAME32 uses an .ini file, but that won't help you anyway.  The TAB method will work, use Inputs ALL games and then change the ones that are different.

A more elegant solution is to use controller .ini files (which is what you were originally asking).  See http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/mamecontrolini.htm

for a run-down.
