I just saw a recent thread on RGVAC about a horizontal Ms. Pac hack. The author gives instructions on how to accomplish this hack in MAME, too.

nice find

Have you tried it? Does it look better on a horizontal then a squished original?
-
I haven't tried it yet, but the screenshots on the authors website sure look interesting! If I get a few minutes today, I was going to try it out just for kicks.
-
I just gave it a try - interesting :)
It certainly looks 'big' on a horiz. screen. A bit wierd that the maze is rotated tho...definately worth a try :)
-
actually, the maze isn't rotated, the sprites are. Not a tough modification. Figure out where the graphics are stored, rotated them, modify how the text shows up.
It's weird to play though.

I see what you mean. As far as the player is concerned tho, the maze is rotated - the 'tunnels' are top+bottom rather than left+right.
-
Sorta. It's still vertical, you have to rotate the screen.

I actually looked at the images this time... (didn't think to click on the 'i'.... kinda hate searching others ftp sites... always worried about finding those 'special' pictures of his wife that wheren't really ment for public consumtion.... and don't worry... I already made sure that replacing the 'i' with 'xxx' or 'xxx-wife' doesnt' work).
It gave me a headache to look at them... just feels wrong... so wrong...
and mspacman is upside down for part of the time...
cool... but wrong...

Maybe that's why my head hurts....
I agree. It's VERY strange to look at. Wrong.
it's just not right.
It might be neat to add as an additional game but I don't want to have to be messing with my zip files all the time...isn't there an easier way to add a hacked game into MAME? or would I have to recompile MAME with my added hacks in it?

Speaking of Pac Hacks...
Are there rom hacks for a 2 player simultamious Pac out there? 2 pacs, or player 2 controls a ghost...
I don't want you to send them to me, I just want to know if it's myth or real... I know I heard of a guy named Widel (http://d_widel.tripod.com/pacsim.htm) that's doing something like this, but has anyone seen it in MAME?
a Google search turns up next to nothing...

Well, Ms. Pac-Man on the Sega Genesis had that mode of gameplay....
never seen it in an arcade version though....

The guys name is David Widel and he has some interesting hacks. I played around with the simultaneous 2 player pac and it is interesting. One person is Ms Pac Man and the other is Pac Man. You get 5 guys between the two players which means 1 player could use up 4 out of the 5 guys while the other player would only end up getting to use the one. I think that aspect takes away from the competitiveness of the game but it does keep separate scores for each player.
