Title: Not sure how to connect my Happ Rotatry Joystick - HELP!!
Post by: kerrycorcoran on July 06, 2015, 03:17:06 pm
Did a quick search and didn't find anything that outlined this specifically.

Finally got my Happ Rotary (mechanical) Joystick and Ultimarc Controller.  The wire harness plugs directly into the controller board, but the thing that is throwing me off is why do the pots have 2 posts?  My basic joystick has only 2 posts.

Any insight on how to properly wire this up?
Thanks ins advance.

Welcome aboard, Kerry.   ;D

The Happ Mechanical Rotary joystick needs two types of encoders: (or a hybrid that combines both)
-- Rotary encoder (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Rotary_Encoders): The 12-position rotary switch (13-position connector) that connects to your Ultimarc Rotary controller
-- Keyboard or Gamepad (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Encoders) encoder: The 4 microswitches that connect to the Up/Down/Left/Right encoder inputs just like any other 4-way/8-way joystick

The Ultimarc rotary interface only handles the rotary switch -- you need another encoder for the joystick and button microswitches.

MAME settings and game lists here (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Joysticks#Rotary_Joysticks).

P.S. The Happ Mechanical Joystick doesn't have "pots" but it does have 4 microswitches (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=FAQ#How_do_I_wire_microswitches_to_an_encoder.3F).

The 3 tabs are Common (COM-#3), Normally Open (NO-#1, #2), and Normally Closed (NC-Not used) -- some microswitches don't have NC tabs.

Kerry,
It may benefit you to post some pics of what you're dealing with here.
The mechanical rotary stick doesn't have any pots.
It has a 12 position rotary and 4 micro switches.
What are the Ultimarc boards you are using here?

I assume by pots, you're talking about the micro switches.
I just noticed Scott already showed how to wire those.

He mentioned that the rotary harness plugs into the "Ultimarc Controller" which I assume is the Ultimarc Rotary Joystick Interface (http://www.ultimarc.com/rotary.html).

No idea if he has another encoder for the joystick/button microswitches.   :dunno

I apologize for not seeing this sooner - I wasn't getting notified that I had replies.

I have the configuration in the image above and also another 2 player controller.  I have been able to make the basic 4 directions work...but unsure what I am to do with the additional leads on the micro switches.

I really appreciate all the help thus far.

Leave the NC tab on each microswitch empty, just like in the pushbutton picture above.

Ok, so right now I have the 1st tab (on the micro switch) connected to a power and the 3rd (on the micro switch) connected to the ground - repeated this on on 4 micro switches - these are connected to my two player controller, from there USB to the computer.  This allows the movement of up, down, right, left and diagonal in each direction.
Then I have the wire harness plugged into P1 on the Ultimarc controller.

If I hop into Mame and set the Positional Analog to None, Dec to [ and Inc to ] (as stated in this thread: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119626.msg1268420.html#msg1268420 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119626.msg1268420.html#msg1268420)

But still, no rotational response.  I assume i am missing something very simple.

Ok, so right now I have the 1st tab (on the micro switch) connected to a power
The 5v is already present on the encoder input (i.e. "1Left" on the I-Pac) no need to wire a separate 5v to it. (you didn't do that, did you?  :scared)

Make sure the rotary harness connectors are oriented so the purple wire (center of the rotary switch) of each is on pin 1. (ignore the LS-30 part of the pic)

You can take MAME out of the equation by opening notepad and twisting the handle to type "[" (P1 left turn), "]" (P1 right turn), "\" (P2 left turn), or "/" (P2 right turn) -- each click of the rotary switch should type one character.

You also need to adjust two more settings in the analog menu. (as mentioned at the "MAME settings and game lists" wiki page (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Joysticks#Rotary_Joysticks) linked in my earlier post ::) )
Quote
For mechanical rotary games:

Input (this Game) menu

    Positional Analog to none

Analog Control menu

    Positional Digital Speed = 0
    Positional Sensitivity = 100

For optical rotary games:

Input (this Game) menu

    Dial Analog to none

Analog Control menu

Dial Digital Speed = double the default value
    Dial Sensitivity = default value

Ok, I tested with notepad as you suggested and I see the "[ ]" via Notepad when I rotate the stick.

After re-reading your information below, I noticed I needed to locate the Sensitivity and Speed settings in the Menus of 'this game'.  Once I made those adjusted in that menu all is working as it should!!

Thank you for your help and patience.

Hope you guys don't mind a gentle bump for further help.

I have had my rotary joy down for ages and finally need to play some Heavy Barrell. I've tried the above with the in games setting with no success. When I open notepad, I do not get keystrokes!

The buttons and joystick work in game however! I am just not able to rotate the player??

Anything else I need to look for please. I have the setup that PL1 shows above.

Cheers.

Which setup?   >:D

I'm assuming Happ Rotary sticks rather than LS-30s, right?

Sorry if this is obvious, but please verify that:
  1. The harness connector is properly oriented (purple ground wire is on pin 1)
  2. The harness connector is properly positioned (purple wire is on pin 1)
  3. The USB cable is plugged in

If it still doesn't work in Notepad, check continuity with power off between ground (pin 1) and only one other pin at a time.
For example:
- turn switch so you have continuity between pin 1 and pin 2
- turn switch one more click so you have continuity between pin 1 and only pin 3 (or 13--depending on rotation direction)
- turn switch one more click so you have continuity between pin 1 and only pin 4 (or 12)
. . .
- turn switch one more click so you have continuity between pin 1 and only pin 13 (or 3)
- turn switch one more click so you have continuity between pin 1 and only pin 2

Just noticed that either Andy or his photographer made the same mistake in this picture -- purple wire toward the USB.   :banghead:   :lol

EDIT: Turns out that the picture is right -- P2 pin 1 (ground) is next to the USB.
