Title: What size LCD screen to achieve correct aspect ratio??
Post by: lettuce on July 04, 2015, 08:22:02 pm
What size LCD screen is needed so if the screen is set vertically and you display a horizontal game on it the game has the correct aspect ratio?.

Im toying with the idea in the future instead of having to resort to having 2 cabs (vertical & Horizontal) or display vertical games on a horizontal screen (small screen for vertical games) just having 1 cab but with the monitor set vertically so you get proper size vertical games whilst also getting your horizontal games filling the width of the TV whilst maintaining the correct aspect ratio but still getting the same screen size you would if the monitor was set horizontally and thus killing 2 birds with one stone!

I can't say for sure but I think that's the best way to go for the best of both worlds.
I have a vertically mounted 27" CRT and it really does well for playing both verticals and horizontals on.

On my monitor, horizontals are equivalent to about 20"

I would think a vertically mounted 32" LCD would do nicely for this.

Ah thats cool, im thinking id need in the region of 42" to get a equivalent 28" screen size for horizontal games??

Now my next question, is it possible to move the active display area on the screen, so its not in the middle??. What im thinking is have the display toward the bottom and then possible have a marquee for the game being played at the top....im not even sure if its possible or software about to allow a game display and then a marquee display on a single screen at the same time and then at definable positions??

A 4:3 20" display is roughly 16"W x 12"H

A 4:3 25" display is roughly 20"W x 15"H

A 32" 16:9 Lcd is 15.7" x 27.9"

A 42" 16:9 is 27.4" x 20.6"

So horizontals on a 16:9 32" mounted vertically would be around equivelent to a 20" 4:3.
You can do a little better if you use a 16:10 lcd.

Tvcalculator.com is nice for figuring screen sizes.

What you're looking to do with the game and marquee showing on the same screen like that, I believe is possible. I seem to remember seeing a Bartop on here once with that setup but I can't find it now

A 42 inch TV will display 3:4(vertical) games at 31.5 inches and 4:3 (horizonal) at 23.625 inches.
