What hinges should I use? I am seeing mixed answers online. It looks like I am wanting European style inset hinges. I know that I don't want a piano binge showing.

European style hinges work great with panels 5/8 or 3/4 thick. You have to route the recess pockets out for them though so 1/2 wood is likely too thin.
If you don't feel conformable with that or lack the tools for that, they make some that don't need that and are directly mounted on the surface without routing, but they are usually more expensive and harder to find. Plus they are iffy because all the strain is on the tiny little screws instead of in the cup in the recessed area. So that would be something to look out for especially since screws don't hold well in MDF if you are using that.
Rockler has a great page to show you different styles of hinges. http://www.rockler.com/how-to/understanding-hinges/ (http://www.rockler.com/how-to/understanding-hinges/)
Hope that helps.

Yes European style hinges are what you want.
I actually used the non routing type years ago for my first controller and they worked great.

Here's great tutorial on how to install European hinges with a hole drill bit (either forstner or spade bit). Seems pretty simple.

Thanks everyone! I guess I should have been more specific. I am using 3/4" this birch plywood for the top and 3/4" x 5" common board for the sides. I am about to go to Lowes and try to find these hinges. I couldn't find them at my local Home Depot. Also I think you just need a forstner bit for the euro hinges, not a router. Either way I have both.
