High Score Competition Rules and Scoreboard (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,143138.0.html)

------------------------------
Game Name: Son Son
ROM Name: sonson
------------------------------

Default Settings:
   3 Lives
   Normal Difficulty
Bonus Lives at 20000, 80000 and every 100000 after that

Controls:
    Joystick: 8-way
    Buttons: 1 (shoot)

KLOV: http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9620 (http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9620)
Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SonSon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SonSon)

Quote from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SonSon
The game is a 2-D sidescrolling platformer. The screen scrolls automatically, only stopping to fight major enemies. The screen features six continuous platforms that occasionally feature small gaps. Sonson and Tonton walk automatically across these platforms. Pressing up or down will cause them to jump up or down to the next platform. Pressing left causes them to move more slowly than the screen scrolls, essentially continuing to move forward but at a reduced pace. Pressing right does the opposite - SonSon and TonTon will move across the platforms faster than the screen scrolls. The duo have only one attack - the ability to fire energy blasts from their stalves. Touching an enemy or an unfriendly projectile causes the player to lose a life. If a player has any additional lives, they will return to the screen riding on a cloud that will give them temporary invincibility. If the player presses the control stick in any direction, the cloud will disappear and the character will resume its usual walking mode. The cloud will eventually disappear on its own if the control stick is not used.

Power-ups come in the form of various fruits which produce points (with enough points giving the player an extra life). Gathering certain fruit will cause all enemies currently on a screen to turn into point-bearing fruits. Walking across certain platforms will randomly cause a bamboo shoot to sprout, yielding many extra points.

It is possible to play the game co-operatively with partner who plays as TonTon (who is Zhu Wuneng in the original story).

Thanks a lot to harveybirdman for the suggestion!

20,020. May just be my Ultrastik but the controls seem especially finicky. I'm jumping a lot when I don't mean to.

Confirm that difficulty setting, please Waki.

Your top post says "normal."

MAME 115U2 shows "easy" as default, with "medium," "hard," & "hardest" as the other options.

Interesting game - takes a bit of time to get used to what is going on and how best to score points but should make for an interesting competition -- After a couple tries 38,800

@jasonbar - Mine (0.149) also shows Normal as default with Easy, hard, hardest as other options so looks like they changed it at some point but looks like normal would be medium !

Here is a screenshot of my DIP switch settings in MAME 0.163. Maybe check that your switches are in the same position as in the pic? Or just upgrade your MAME version, 115 is really ancient :P

This setting matches the default setting as shown in the manual (http://www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/S/sonson_manual.pdf) (though they forgot to print an "OFF" and some switches are not even documented):

Revving MAME isn't in the cards for me now...probably never will be, actually...

Upped to medium. Did way better. Probably b/c I used the keyboard & not the joypad. Way way more controllable. This smells like a 4-way stick game, not 8-way.

61,360.

Thanks,

May just be my Ultrastik but the controls seem especially finicky. I'm jumping a lot when I don't mean to.

I made an UtraStik map for it. Works better than normal 4-way, but not as good as my gamepad set to digital.

Maybe some experimenting will get better results.

I'm also playing this with my JLF set to 4-way. Might be a 4-way game, I dunno. Use whatever feels best to you!

Two questions :

What's the deal with this guy ? I don't believe that he can be shot, he just runs through the screen and then vanishes.

Second question : Do you always get an extra life at 100,000 ? I sometimes get one, but more often don't, even though the dip switches are set to extra life at 100,000.

That guy appears when you let a big fruit item scroll off the screen. He carries it to the right giving you a second chance to collect it for half the points it was originally worth.

Also, remember this from U.N. Squadron? :D

Haven't noticed anything about lives, I'll pay attention the next time I play.

Nothing new there apart from the 'get the bamboo as fast as you can' part. And of course the green guy whom I don't see that often (must be doing something right).

6x small food = big food
8x big food = POW sign

these were both new to me
Title: Re: High Score Competition #169: SonSon
Post by: yamatetsu on July 03, 2015, 10:17:00 am
Hmmm, I must have overlooked that one. I just assumed that the small food is worthless because it yields next to no points. I only get the POW once, always at the same spot, I think that's because I always collect the same bamboos until then.

Sigh. Seems like I have to collect the food now too, besides blasting everything that moves ... That will take some fun out of the game.

Their are preset POW signs too. It's all mentioned in the wiki :P

Not sure but the setting shows 20,000 - 80,000 - 100,000

which I think translates to one extra life @ 20k - one @80k and one every 100k after that so next one at 180,000 not 100,000 !

Oh well, seems like I need to read the wiki again  :)

So we need someone to reach 180,000 points ...

This is correct, I just did a quick test with cheats: nothing at 100k, extra life at 180k, extra life at 280k etc.

They are actually worth 2k when collected while they are still growing. Plus you get 500 for uncovering them.

136,140. I'm beginning to suspect that Waki's score is pretty good.

I'm beginning to suspect the same because I haven't gotten anywhere close since then  :D

That, and the fact that I have to use the d-pad on my gamepad. Not very precise and tiring on the fingers.
