Title: Baton placement on Weecade cabinet
Post by: tdmame on June 22, 2015, 01:37:52 pm
I purchased a pre-cut Weecade kit from Amazon seller Bartop Cabinet. The kit has pretty good reviews and are supposed to be cut to the specs on the Deganatron's Weecade Clone Project. The panels used on this kit are 3/4" plywood however and I did find a review that mentioned this and how it changes things (below). I'm struggling with the dowel placement. I am using 1/2" square wood and I found a thread on this site (As of yet unnamed WeeCade clone) that has a baton placement guide that I printed and tried to use but it's a bit smaller than the actual wood pieces. Can anyone assist with this as I can't proceed with the build until I have the batons in place. Thank you!

Review that mentions variances caused by using 3/4" plywood:

Arcade parts are cut according to the CNC files created by Deganatrons in his Weecade Clone project (freely available). However, those plans were designed for 12mm MDF panels, instead of 3/4" plywood (~19mm). The CNC file was not altered at all to account for this, so extensive modification is required for a nice build...

The routed guidelines were designed with 15mm square dowels (and the aforementioned 12mm MDF panels), you'll need to ignore them and mount 7mm further from the lines away from the edge, in many places

Did you contact the seller for any advice? I've only messed with 1/2 inch bartops.

write "return to sender" on the box and get a refund. Haruman and Rick both sell kits on here and Ive never hard of either of them having that problem.

Only 1 reviewer had this discouraging information. Other comments said it worked out fine. What is beyond me, regardless of width of the panels, is where is the dowel placement actually documented? I didn't see it in the original Weecade plans and as mentioned the one from the other thread on this site is a template that is too small and also provides no measurements.

If using 3/4" panels - you will want them 3/4" in from where you want the outside of the panels to sit !

Ie. for the bottom that you want flush with the sides you want to place the bottom of the side baton 3/4" in from the bottom of the side panel - so that when you attach the bottom piece to the side the 3/4" of the bottom piece fits under the side baton and sits flush with the bottom of the side panel. - same for the back panel - then same for the rest but 3/4" down from where you want the top of those pieces to rest.

Okay (pardon my mental blockage on this) so you basically just line the pieces up how you want them to fit and then mark the sides of the cabinets?

The seller has the worst youtube video ever where he just nails it together and apologizes for it being crooked LOL

Pretty much -- Here's a video made by degenetrons that shows the batons around the 3:10 mark (he uses a straight edge measure to the proper distance which for 3/4" wood would be 3/4" in then just run a pencil mark around the outer edge to help line up the batons - (adjust if you want to leave a lip on some parts - ie. if you want a 1/4" lip make the mark 1" in from the side for that portion (3/4 + 1/4)
