Title: Modding Hori/Madcatz sticks
Post by: ras2a on June 13, 2015, 08:00:11 am
Hi guys

It's an AGE since I last posted here (had LOTS of help with my cab, arc-eden).

Having sold my cab years back (a very sad time that was) and due to budgetary and time constraints now, I'm looking to mod an off the shelf stick. So, something like one of thr units from Hori or Madcatz.

My main aim is to replace the cheap parts with the good stuff. So, I'm thinking a good ball-top that can do both 4 &  8 way for the stick. For the buttons, I really don't like convex or flat buttons and was wondering two things:

1) Can you get hold of 'short' Happ style concave buttons?
2) What Hori/Madcatz/Other cases would accommodate the concave buttons.. Again, if these are even available?

I was also wanting to go wireless for convenience, but don't know if any of the stick manufacturers do a wireless stick?

Oh how I wish I had the funds/time for even a bartop... Sadly, it's going to have to be an off the shelf job

Thanks in advance for any sage words of wisdom
Ras

Rather than waste money purchasing an HORI or other stick that you just plan to strip anyway why not just build one ??

Figure by building you can concentrate on the parts you want to use and spend the money on them rather than spend on an expensive box. Building also means you just adjust the plans to fit the longer Happ buttons or adjust the layout to one you want ( for example I like the dual joystick games so made mine setup for 2 joysticks and 6 buttons iin an 11 inch wide design (kept it 11 inches wide so I could print my own art)

For example Here is a pic of a Kade Barstick I am building for playing games like Robotron/Smash TV/Crazy Climber on my desktop system (since I keep finding myself playing games on it rather than going to the rec room and booting up the bartop)  :dunno

Figure my cost on the build so far is $0 ( I had the piece of 11" x 48" 1/2 MDF and 2 11 inch strips of aluminum left over from another project as well as the wood glue and furring strips and the artwork is printed from my laser printer on full sheet sticker/label paper)  But even if buying everything it wouldn't have cost anywhere near what an HORI stick would have cost and that would leave just spending on the other parts for the build !!

Do you know what, I think you're absolutely spot on. I'd most likely not be happy with it and obviously I could build something to my precise requirements.

I'd want to be able to use this with Hyperspin and will need to investigate what the best interfaces are these days. I think Ultimarc may have what I need.

Design time it is :)

Thanks mate
