Hello All,
So I have been reading about Golden Tee Fore! on the board and that sounds like something I would like to include on my mame cabinet (still in progress). I'm sure this is a noob question but what steps do I need to take to update to .162? I currently have .155.
I read a bit on having to update all your roms... that seems like a chore. Does it need to be done to just update the emulator?
Thanks for your help,
-B

You can just update to your version of MAME to 0.162. Probably 99% of your ROMs will work on the new update. I would download the current version of the ROMs and CHDs for Golden Tee Fore though.

Leave your current set up alone and just gather the needed files and try it from a different folder on your system. You need a power house computer to run it currently. No sense in going through the trouble of updating if it won't be playable on your system.
good day.

Get the new version from www.mamedev.org (http://www.mamedev.org)
If you aren't used to the official command line version of MAME and are used to using some MAME derivative like MAME32 or MAMEUI, download MAMEUI from here:
http://www.mameui.info/ (http://www.mameui.info/) (64-bit only)
Only roms that were changed would need to be updated.
The changes are usually just renaming or reorganizing files.
The affected rom will not work because the newer version of MAME will be looking for the files under the wrong name or in the wrong place.
See the what's new file for each version between yours and the new one.

....or just wait until a game you want to play doesn't work and then look it up.
If you want to dive into the world of keeping your romset updated without having to check the whatsnew, do a search online for clrmamepro
I've done it in the past, but anymore I just don't update until there's a big reason to. At that point I just get a new romset from scratch.
My cab is still on v.146
I probably won't update it until I build a new computer for it several years from now.
Since this game used a hard drive, you will need the CHD image in addition to any roms.

the $10,000 question.
Where is the best place to find the new Golden Tee Fore! games?
I've got 30k+ of roms, but I did it the easy way and found the roms on a newly purchased hard drive.
Thanks,
-Bob

The only answer you will get to that around here is, "Google is yer friend".

make a backup of your roms folder before you do any updating. im slowly working on updating to 161. instead of keeping a full set of 28k roms im just going to only keep ones that actually work. puts me down to about 6-9k depending on if you get rid of the bootleg and hacks.

Are you using a frontend? If so, who's got time to scroll through 1,000's of games to get to the good ones. I kept 390 mame games that I thought my friends would actually play. I have all the rest in case someone says "hey you don't have pac man on here!"

im using hyperspin. what im doing is 3 things. im keeping all the working roms that i have in a back up folder(for like you said if someone wants a game i dont have added i can add it.. which is about 6k. then im making a set from that of the roms i have the controls for so in my case two sticks(4/8 way) 6 buttons ea player. which is about 2k that reduced list will be the one that hyperspin uses. then my favorites list will be the most played and/or my favs which for me is about 20 games. im using romlister to make all the xml files with a lil editing from my self. like i dont want puckman but i want pacman so i take puckman out of the final XML altho it is in the baseline xml.
