Title: Rowe AMI Laserstar IV doesn't like some commercial CDs.
Post by: MSP on May 26, 2015, 01:44:48 pm
Hello all, I've been lurking for a while and finally had a question I needed to ask, if you would be so kind.  I have a Rowe 100E, CCC version 4.0, and a CDPro installed.  According to a decal on the drive looks like they installed a new laser assembly back in February.

Anyway, my issue is that the player just doesn't like some commercial CDs.  Seems to be more modern discs affected.  None of the discs I'm having trouble with have run-times over 80 minutes.

So is this normal?  My success rate with my CD collection so far has been about 90-95%, so it's not a deal breaker.  But I have some discs I'd really like to load.  And I know this might be heretical, but is there a particular brand of CD-R that might work?  I've tried copying my stubborn CDs to TDK CD-Rs, with mixed results.  Some work a little better, others about the same.

Nothing...?  Nobody has had experiences or advice regarding commercial CD playback issues?

behaps copy control CDs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy_Control) ? it's CD which had errors. Audio CD players must correct error on the fly but CD rom try to correct them.
I got some errors on my car radio with copy control CD.

Yeah, might be.  Seems to be that my old CDs from the late 80s early 90s work fine.  It's the newer ones from the 2000s that seem to be little fussy.  I've ordered some Taiyo Yuden "Grade A" CD-Rs, by all accounts those are the best for error free copies.  I've try duplicating my discs and report back.

OK, here's what I have discovered:

*  The commercial CDs that I was having trouble with also reported read errors when I attempted to copy them on my computer.  Seems like certain discs might be prone to this, as I had not one but TWO copies of one, and both reported errors.

*   The Taiyo Yuden "Grade A" CD-Rs work great.  Running through a batch right now, so far 100% playback success.

*   How the discs are burned is important too - 1x-4x, disc-at-once (DAO96), finish disc, no gaps.

So all's well that ends well.  I was just afraid that I might have some problem with my juke.  Turns out not all commercial and CD-R discs are created equal.
