Title: Virtual pinball
Post by: jackiabu on May 22, 2015, 09:46:42 am
Hi

I decided that my next project will be a virtual pinball.  This is something I wanted to do long ago. But I had no space in the room, until now.

anyway i want to order some part, and i see this one http://nanotechent.com/mot-ionkit.php (http://nanotechent.com/mot-ionkit.php)

my question  is there simple way to connect Plunger With micro switch?

Thanks for the help

so far...

Check http://www.vpforums.org/ (http://www.vpforums.org/) for more information on the pros/cons of the Nanotech kit vs. the newer VirtuaPin™ Digital Plunger Kit v2 (http://virtuapin.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8&products_id=105&zenid=97502ef89e6ac19bb82b8e4977a31262) -- users have reported issues with both options.  :dunno

The upside to these kits is the analog nudge feature.

my question  is there simple way to connect Plunger With micro switch?
Many builds have used a microswitch with a plunger, but the microswitch can take a pretty bad beating, depending on how it is mounted.

IIRC one build used a fender washer mounted on the tip of the plunger using a cotter pin through the plunger shaft.

When the plunger was pulled back, the washer would press the lever arm of the microswitch.

There were also blocks that kept the washer from pulling back so far that the switch is damaged.

Many builds have used a microswitch with a plunger, but the microswitch can take a pretty bad beating, depending on how it is mounted.

This. I think the micro switch would get hammered pretty bad if the plunger makes direct contact with it. You could rig it so that the plunger engages a switch when it is pulled back like in this old thread http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,7361.msg53235.html#msg53235 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,7361.msg53235.html#msg53235)

Something to bear in mind with these setups that use a microswitch is that although they have a "real" plunger, they effectively reduce it to a "button". You could just get one of those large "launch ball" pinball buttons that were found on later pinball machines http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=1685 (http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=1685)

On my pinball build I have gone with the V2 from virtuapin, but can't really comment on how good it is yet. I suspect it is better than the nano tech because it auto calibrates everytime the PC is turned on. I think I read than the old version regularly went out of calibration and was a pain to fix.

The advantage of these expensive plungers is that they adjust the power of the shot based on the position of the drawn back plunger (distance). The microswitch option adjusts the power based on how long (time) you pull it back for. They should be more "authentic" (and I use that term pretty loosely), but whether it is worth the extra $$$ is up to you  ;D

Microswitch- may as well have a launch ball button.

Nanotech plunger- I have one on my pincab, the analog nudge is crap, everything else works great.Initial calibration is a bit querky. Only the nudge loses calibration. Unless it's a big cab, i wouldn't use analog nudge. I would put buttons in front of the flippers for nudge, but it's your cab. If you use analog nudge you better make sure everything is mounted solid, or you will be chasing down wiring problems. i thought about trying one of these on mine http://www.amazon.com/Parts-Express-Mercury-Tilt-Switch/dp/B0002ZPBKM (http://www.amazon.com/Parts-Express-Mercury-Tilt-Switch/dp/B0002ZPBKM)

Mouse plunger thread http://www.vpforums.org/index.php?showtopic=14861 (http://www.vpforums.org/index.php?showtopic=14861)

A DIY nudge device I made but never hooked it up http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,143794.msg1493345.html#msg1493345 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,143794.msg1493345.html#msg1493345)

Another tidbit is I spent a ton of time setting up my nanotech plunger for each table. Some are easy, some are hard, and some the plunger won't work.

I have the VirtuaPin™ Digital Plunger Kit v2 and been using it for about a year now. Its working great, plunger and nudging is working like it should.

And i have all the buttons also wired to this kit , so you dont need something like a ipac

http://www.pinballlife.com/ (http://www.pinballlife.com/) is a good source for parts.  I have a standard cab virtual pin using Zeb's controller/plunger http://www.zebsboards.com (http://www.zebsboards.com).  I also have a mini pin that's in the works, I'm just using a mini Ipac on it, no plunger.  If your going to use a plunger, keep in mind that it's about 10" long and will have to slide under the monitor.

Here's my mini pin that's in the works:

Nice cab you build there  and thanks for the links

i have some question to you...can you show me pic how you connect your The Digital Plunger Kit v2 with all the wire, pcb, to your cab?

allso i have some difficulty to put my LEd tv on my cab :banghead:  can you show me how you put your  led/plasma on your cab?

Thanks!

On my Fullsized cab, I routed the sides and just set the LCD on rails attached to the sides.  The I cut strips that fit the gap in sides above the LCD and attach them through the side rails using binding posts.  The glass channel still fits in place like originally.  The plunger was moved down so that it passes under the LCD on this cab.

The mini cab is just a simple tray that the monitor sits on:

Here's a picture where you can see the plunger and the controller for it.  This shot is the Nanotech plunger kit bottom center. I'll have to snap a new photo with Zebs board installed.  These just use a USB cable to the PC.  Each button/flipper connect to a port on the board.  The LEDWiz controls my LEDs and Contactors

How did you cut your panels? They look like they're laser-cut or something. Very nice work!  :applaud:

The plunger (Zeb's) is plug and play.  You calibrate it once like any other gamepad/joystick and that's it.

I might have missed it, but what are you using to make it so nice and shiny?

And can you give details of how you fashioned the lockdown? doesn't look metallic....I'm trying to come up with ideas.
