Title: Classic TMNT Arcade look with Ultimarc Goldleaf Buttons Question
Post by: fettsvett201 on May 18, 2015, 12:27:00 am
Hello

I am in the planning process of building my arcade cabinet.

I have decided on a 4 player cabinet and wish to "echo" the colors to my favorite arcade game when I was young; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The classic color layout is blue, yellow, purple, and red.

I see that the Goldleaf buttons have the yellow and red I want.

I think the dark blue will work for the blue.

However, the goldleaf buttons do not have the purple I would like.

Can I get the Happ purple buttons and put the insides of a goldleaf button in it?

Thanks

I don't think so.

The plungers and switches are completely different.

You might want to look into using Rit dye on white buttons using the tutorial Rodney linked here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,130522.msg1372664.html#msg1372664).

Several BYOAC'ers have successfully dyed pushbuttons.

That certainty is an idea.

Do you think I would have to sand these buttons to get them to dye correctly?

Also, the Goldleaf buttons look to have metal contacts on the bottom. Can I remove these or do I need to figure out how to cover them? I don't know if I want to put them in boiling dye.

Never tried to dye this type of button, but AFAIK the people who have tried didn't sand the buttons.   :dunno

Buttons are cheap -- buy a couple extras for testing the dye process/timing.

The plunger, body, and switch assemblies separate easily.   ;D

 - First, press in the two tabs on the side of the plunger to pull it free from the body.

 - Then use a pair of foreceps or needlenose pliers to squeeze the tabs on the side of the switch and push it through the body.

Have you considered using normal Happ Buttons with GGG's Microleaf switches?

I had not. When it comes to buttons, I wanted quiet, easy to wire buttons that I can wire to the i-pac board.

The gold leaf buttons looked to be the best buttons to get, in terms of response, quietness, and look.

Are the Happ buttons you mentioned have the same look and sound as the gold leaf buttons? Nothing would bother me more then having 3 players with buttons with the same sound and look and have the fourth player be something different

I'd give them a shot. I have two installed in my panel next to my 4-way and they are super quiet. Hence the name. With the panel closed you can't even tell. They feel "leafy".
