Sucks she did that, but I think blaming the internet for being a cruel ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- up place is a little short sighted. No matter what you are or what you do there will always be a cluster of people who hate you for it. Her friends gave great advice to just ignore it. The latter article implied the death was more likely due to the pain from rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia with the transphobia as a secondary reason, but your post seems to imply Rachel killed herself strictly due to online bullying.
My thoughts are with her family as they go through this tough time.

I agree and have edited my above post to better reflect it. I did not mean to imply it was the internets fault.
It's sad when ever some one feels the need to take their own life. I would imagine there were many reason she decided to do so. I'd think transphobia probably would have been one of them, it can not be an easy life to live. But it is still transphobia even if is strangers on the internet and it could not have helped her emotionally.

It's a little hard for me to parse wanting to kill ones' self over trolling, but then again, my perspective is different. I love getting approbation for the few contributions I've made and posted online to my hobbies. It's nice but not critical for me. It's never really happened, but If I got trolled, change the channel, whatever. I have a ton of IRL going on - Kids, wife, dog, pinball machines, etc. But, If I was in poor health and isolated, I know the online life would be a much bigger thing.
I speak out against hate and personal attacks on the net in the infrequent situations that come up, and I don't support or use 4chan or reddit. My sympathy to her family and friends. Sounds like she was the type of dev that every project needs and doesn't have enough of.

Depression is real. People are ---uvulas---.

It's not short sighted at all. I won't go into my personal situation, but let's just say that even ignoring my medical issues I've had one hell of a year in the personal life department. Depression isn't a switch where there is one thing, it sets you off and boom you are suicidal. It's like standing around minding your own business and someone asks you to hold something for them... it's a little heavy, but hey you are willing to help out.... and then the next person asks you to hold something else, and then the next and then the next. Once you are holding 20 or 30 things someone can ask you to hold a toothpick and it's just enough to break you and you drop it all.
So yeah, if she was at her breaking point and enough people were being ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- it could have been enough to send her over the edge. It doesn't excuse the other factors in her life but at the same time, these commenters just don't get a free pass because a normal, healthy person should be able to deal with them. She wasn't normal or healthy so that logic doesn't apply to her.
Everybody is a jerk sometimes, it just happens, we are human after all, but understand that there are consequences to that. I've been trying to make a conscious effort to improve myself in this department, if not for everyone else but my own mental and physical health. At the same time though, I'm never going to be a ball of sunshine so people will just have to meet me somewhere in the middle in terms of my a-hole ratio. At the same time, I'm willing to meet others halfway as well.

This is very difficult to discuss due to the nature of the content, but when I started looking into this story, a part of me wished that I could have been there and stopped the beginnings of the eventual outcome. Hearing how these people (if you could call them that) caused this young person to perish is very hard to understand.
There was lots of personal issues going on, the constant pain, and consistant contribution to the emulation community which create so many benefits. We really do not know how much we lost, probably what has been accomplished in Dolphin is the tip of the iceburg.
The other part of me, is disgusted that the controls in place, nor the operators, did not stop the abuse, and should all be reported and looked at by the authorities. Hopefully these scumbags can be traced and held accountable.

trimmed your post to address these parts directly, hope I left what you said in context. I just want to explain what I meant by shortsighted.
I felt it was unfair to say Rachel killed herself strictly because of cyberbullying. There were obviously other factors in her life to make her do what she did. Never said to excuse ---uvulas--- for being ---uvulas---.

Although I didn't say it was the internets fault and did not mean to imply such. After Malenko's first reply, I saw how he could see it implied, so I edited it a bit. I am a person with dyslexia and sometimes my first attempt in a post miss what it was I was trying to say. Thank you Malenko for your feed back.
I think we all agree this was a sad thing to have happened regardless of the exact reason why it happened.

Is anything being done to help the family? It would be nice to show those of us who enjoyed Dolphin weren't all ---uvulas---...
