Kick starter $9, 1Gh, 512mb ram, 4GB sotoege.

There are so many of these projects it is hard to get excited for any of them. This one is very cheep and small, so it peaked my interest. At least it should play Galaga.

Thats a nice looking box. Speaking as someone living in a developing country, there definitely could be a market for something like that. Although at $169 per unit I hope they have a lower price point in mind for there intended market.
My first thought about the "Chip" was I may could find a way to do something here to help a local school. Mame is usually something I try up just because.

A computer connected to a television....
Reminds me of my childhood.
-
The more things change, the more they remain the same...
I agree that the point of these devices is to get computing to the masses. It just cracks me up that 30 seconds after they're announced, some yahoos are scheming on how to get them to run MAME. >:D

Oh, it was schemed up well before the product was ever announced......
Connect bluetooth controllers to C.H.I.P. and play thousands of games both retro and new. Been missing that amazing DOS game from your childhood? C.H.I.P. plays it!

How long until we get requests for a C.H.I.P. subforum?
-
My first thought was not mame. I end up trying to run Mame on just about everything I play with. Because why not? :dunno
I'm always looking for interesting linux boards. This one seems particularly cheep and small so I thought I would share as it seemed like something people in this community may take interesting.
-
I pledged. For $14 shipped, why not?
-
I actually pledged, too. But I have no intention of running MAME on it. Instead, I want to look at some other functions, like mobile computing, or digital signage.
-
I figured people here would be interested. Yotsuya's, using one for a version of your high score board is a good idea.
I back it to see is I could use them to build computer lab in a local school here in Dar es Salaam Tanzania. I'll definitely but DOS box on it for all the simple free ware educational games. This custom versions of the Free DOS (http://superkeen.com/peacecorpsweblog/learning-software/)operating system is a good example of making good use of older educational games. I'v also been playing around with the idea to find a very affordably business model for local people to have technical training centers. Using this model (http://tunapanda.org) but with cheep more modern hardware.
I'll probably try sticking name on it as well, just because I can.
I have no plans to ever build one, but it could be use full to guys who do Micro Arcade projects (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Micro_Arcade_Projects). It's cheeper and smaller then a Pi and the GPIO's would make it a easier to hook up controls to then a smart phone.
-
What a fantastic, modern age we live in.

Same here... for $9 a pop I can think of a couple of my projects this will go straight into. The add-ons are cheaper than I expected making that HDMI module very attracive but I hope no one is expecting the world from this device. Afterall it's still a 1GHz ARM at the end of the day.

I like this and will pledge to get mine, but I think i'm a little irked by the video output & how they charge $10 more for vga connector.
Where you are, what is more plentiful?
old crt tv's with composite in or old monitors (crt or lcd) with VGA in?
I can't help but feel like i'm getting huckstered with this device.
"hey, here's a computer for only $9"
"but, it only connects to an old TV that you probably don't even own, however for more than the actual cost of the PC we'll throw in a $2 vga connector soldered to an old floppy drive connector that you can plug into the Pc to make it actually useful."
like I said, they will get my money because it's a cheap cool silent device that i can use for all kinds of projects but I probably won't buy a vga adaptor.

yes & no.
my first pi, the original model B did cost more.
The place I bought it from charged me like $10 shipping.
And i needed a power adapter.
but that was when they first came out and I didn't have that type of phone charger but I had an hdmi to dvi adapter already and spare USB keyboards & mice.
all in all my first rpi $35 computer probably cost me $55.
I got my RPI2 when they came out and still feel I paid too much for shipping/tax ($45 total) but didn't need anything else.
MCM just had a $5 shipping special so I ordered another RPI2 for $40 shipped.
I got enough spare parts in totes these days where I don't need to buy anything, but someone new to this stuff wouldn't have it on hand or know where to get things cheap & buy's the $100 to $150 rpi kits.

Run it headless.
What OS? Android? Vanilla Linus Torvalds?

Hmmm, seems cool but tbh by may 2016 we'll probably be running 2000ghz processors in our eyes if things keep progressing at the rate they currently are :-o
also, I'm extremely dubious of this "wynter" character. Oh, and the guy in the bottom right. He looks particularly oily.

Call DARPA, they'll have what you want today.
Might have to go through a security check and maybe a body cavity search or three. Then there's that pesky NDA.
Oh well.... it was nice knowing you 8)
I'm a big believer in parallel multi-core systems myself. 3,120,000 CPU's for the top contender is nothing to sneeze at. (http://www.top500.org/lists/2014/11/) It'd be a might hard to shove that into your eyeball though.

Yeah, but can it play Gauntlet Legends at 100%?

Finally I can use all those altoid tins I have laying around. And no I don't have dog breath. :lol

Playing Gauntlet Legends at 100% might not be what we want. It's like knowledge about the universe. Once we reach 100%, MAME devs will go fdestory everything there is about MAME, complicating the entire system and sending all of us back to square one.
So NO.
-
Well, granted, it's about as complicated as arcade games ever got. Except for golden tee. Golden tee is so epic it will never happen in our lifetimes.
And joke all you want. No PBJ = no dank BYOAC maymays
-
also, I'm extremely dubious of this "wynter" character.
my thoughts exactly. Doesn't seem too keen on showing his face, perhaps not proud of their product? What was his job, writing and recording the various OS beeps and boops?
-

It would be a toss up. There are probably more cheep used composite TV's then Cheep used VGA monitors here in Dar Es Salaam, but the price of electricity would make the VGA monitors the better long term deal.
100% agree about the connector being to expensive. No way a VGA adapter should be more expensive then the computer. Unless there's some copyright royalties I don't know about. That said, the brand new LED television in my living room has a composite input that I could use.
Edit: The Gert VGA 666 – Hardware VGA for Raspberry Pi (https://www.pi-supply.com/product/gert-vga-666-hardware-vga-raspberry-pi/) is £6.00 or $9.25 US Dollar. That about the same as the chip VGA adapter so it may be a fair price. :dunno

I bet he just got that guitar.

Did anyone get update #13 about BackerKit?
Are you going to take them up on their offer. I would love to snag another CHiP with free S&H and if I understand the email correctly, the accessories if I pay S&H? I'll take them up on that offer. I was thinking I might want the HDMI or VGA parts too.

I will snag another chip for the same s&h.

I'll get a second as well.
It looks like as long as you don't add enough stuff to change the price of shipping for them.

Wonder which one's kicksarting vanessa... ooops... please excuse my vulgarity...
-
I think I'll wait for the first one to show up before I order a second.
-
Chip is shipping.
two shipments though.
One now with no OS and needs to be flashed for the backers who paid the highest tier & everyone else should get theirs with an OS by mid October.
-
Are these the "Alpha" CHIPS? I think only the ones who paid for the dev package are getting those?
-
Are these the "Alpha" CHIPS? I think only the ones who paid for the dev package are getting those?
Yep.
I saw a 15" 4:3 LCD TV yesterday at a thrift store for $9.
I immediately thought of the CHIP i'm getting next month with only composite out.
I have two coming but only bought one VGA adapter.
Which appears to be coming after I get my CHIP's?
-
I was indecisive about getting a VGA or HDMI out, so I held back. I'm hoping they'll sell those seperately later on.
I want to replace the crappy video player in the van with this and the monitor is composite only anyways. I also have a mobile network that will see the other CHIP I bought. I hope the decoder works well, otherwise I'll have to use a $50 Pi.
-
I bought one with VGA out just because it was cheap. But I really don't have any plans for it. I'm not going to cram Mame on to it, or anything like that. I like the idea of a carputer or something like that.
-
Didn't participate, but I'm impressed that they are delivering and in a timely fashion.
I'm only backing kickstarters by hipsters from now on.
-

First time for everything!
-
Got a email that they have shipped. Has any gotten theres yet? It will take me longer to get min as I am in Nepal.
-
I think I'm slotted for May because of the VGA adapter I'm getting.
-
Assuming you play 1 hour a day (which you won't after the novelty wears off) then CRT will use 17 cents more electricity per month than the LCD would. Assuming the LCD cost $50 it would take 25 years to hit the break even point. Of course the LCD and this joke chip will both be long dead before then and the bartop it was put in will have been in the trash for at least a decade.

Right, but here it is, right in an arcade forum, where impressionable young stupid people with short attention spans see it mentioned, think it is good and then ruin their projects with it.
-
Ha! There are no young people in this hobby.

Just got the email that mine shipped. I can't wait to get it an not install MAME on it!
I actually have an idea for a kick-ass interactive wall clock/display for my new classroom, so I'm planning to use it for that....
-
Got mine a while ago... and of course it has since died. :badmood:
Supposedly I can flash the firmware to fix it but I haven't tried that yet.

I just got mine.
My initial first impression are the composite video quality is poor, the composite standard composite cord is to short, and I wish the single USB was a double.
I ordered an additional composite cord that is longer and a VGA shield that I haven't tested yet. Because there is only one USB port, I need to go to a thrift shop to get a USB key board with a built in USB Hub.
In the short time I have played with it, I think for most users it will be a good option for embedded devices like digital signs. It is clearly designed for use with a TV's.
I have been working on an idea to build a low cost, low import, computer lab and this may fight right into my planes. The Raspberry Pi line up offers a lot more, but at this price point the fact that wifi is included may make this worth investigating.
-
...I need to go to a thrift shop to get a USB key board with a built in USB Hub.
Or... you could just pick up a cheap 4 port usb hub and use any old keyboard.
-
You need a powered USB port.
-
I'm going to build a bad - ass clock/weather station/sign with mine. I got the VGA shield and a 19" LCD for $8 to go with it.

Played with it a bit. I ordered a powered USB hub for the keyboard and mouse, but I'm a little iffy on the quality of the VGA. I have some lines on the monitor I don't see when it's hooked up to the Pi.
