Title: Basic CP button question
Post by: get2daachoppaaaa on April 30, 2015, 10:45:26 am
Hey all,

I am building a 2 player cab, I know I need 2 joysticks and 6 buttons a piece for a basic 6 button layout, but what other buttons will I need? 1 and 2 player Start, 1 and 2 player Insert Coin too? are there any buttons I am forgetting? I am running Hyperspin, will I need Enter and Exit buttons for that?

Also where is the best place to get buttons and joysticks?

Thanks!

You need a start for each player. Depending on your encoder, you can get away with less buttons. For example, you can hold P1 start and push P1 button 1 to add coins, and hold P1 start and press P2start to exit games. As for best place to get buttons, there are many. I always order mine from Tornado Terrys.

It depends if you have a coin door or not.  If you do, you don't really need a button on the CP.  There are many other options such as modding the coin door to have a microswitch behind the coin door reject button (I believe it's non-destructive to the coin door).  Another option is to place a NovaGem coin button on the front of the box of the CP (not on the top of the CP).  Edit:  And as Malenko mentioned above, you can use shift buttons (built into the I-Pac or Keywiz keyboard encoders as player 1 start button) to insert coins or any other function.

As for the enter button, you can re-assign the keyboard encoder (I-pac, keywiz, etc) to have "enter" as button 1.  This will solve A TON of issues with PC games.

Just another note:  Joystick encoders don't work with Hyperspin's menus.  Only keyboard encoders do.  It's a known bug.  There are software workarounds, but you may as well stick to a keyboard encoder to nip it in the bud.

Have fun!

What do you mean by keyboard encoder? I am ordering an IPAC2, does this mean I can't navigate menus with the joystick in Hyperspin? Sorry if that is a dumb question.

If I order the Killer Instinct set of Tornado Terry site (6 buttons per joystick and 1 and 2 player start) will this work for me and my IPAC2 for my two player cab? I'm looking for like an all-in-one set, buttons, switches, joysticks all together to make it a little easier.

IPAC2 is a keyboard encoder.  You'll be able to navigate hyperspin just fine with it.  As for Terry's kits, you can always add buttons to it just in case you might need more. Tell him Malenko sent you :p
