Title: Max buttons need for vertical games?

If I were to build a cabinet with a vertical screen, only playing vertical mame games, what would be the maximum number of control buttons I would need?

I would think 3?  Can't think of too many vertical games that require more than 3 buttons.

Im thinking a micro vertical using the Pi2 I bought a while back.
