Title: I Love Craigslist - Found Ultimate Monitor I Have Been Looking For
Post by: csnow on April 15, 2015, 11:52:21 am
As much as I love arcade cabinets (have several), I really love sitting on the couch or in a comfy bean bag to play my retro games.  I have always wanted a mix of retro consoles and MAME at my figertips but outputting MAME to a TV has always been very blah to me  I have been searching CL and found this wonderful gem last night.  I know it probably won't impress many, but I feel like a kid at Christmas time.  Nice big 36" CRT TV with (2) SVGA ports and a plethora of other goodies on the back. This beast will allow me to connect a MAME PC via VGA,  Dreamcast w/VGA, PS2, and Wii.  Here is a picture of the massive TV sitting in the back of the Excursion this morning.

PC input with RCA connectors, and a PC input with a headphone jack connector? Thats awesome.

I like the speaker outs too.

The thing to be careful of with some of these "Presentation" monitors is that they often just used an inexpensive scaler inside to display VGA.  This is fine for most purposes, but the quality might not be very good.  If you were lucky enough to find a true multi-scan (usually a Mitsubishi), then you hit the jackpot.  I found three of them for close to no cost about a decade ago, two 36's and a 27.  They are a nightmare to store and move, but I would never give them up :)

It is a RCA MM36100.  I hope the picture looks good via VGA but I have to wait for my son to get back into town this evening to get it out of the Excursion.    Luckily, there was a construction worker at the apartment complex where I bought it at that  helped me load it.  There is no way I could have come down the stairs with it.  Well there is, but it would have elbows and legs rolling in fast succession all the way down:).  This thing feels like it weighs a ton.  If it turns out to be a crappy internals on the VGA, I am only out $50 for the TV and $10 that I paid to the guy to help me load it.  I will still make use of it regardless for my old consoles.  Fingers crossed.

Update - Very positive threads about the VGA quality on AVSforums.  I am hopeful.

Try mounting one vertically by yourself. http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,97260.msg1025567.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,97260.msg1025567.html)

From here (http://support.radioshack.com/support_video/doc59/59865.pdf):

The RCA Digital High-Resolution Monitor is a true SVGA 800x600 pixel
progressive scan, (multiscan/multisync) display. This gives you professional
quality monitor capability with a multiscan/multisync system that automatically
detects signals with horizontal scan rates from 15.7 kHz to 37.7 kHz. Connecting
your computer to this SVGA input delivers 480,000 pixels of resolution.

Congratulations!  If the picture is decent, you made a major score.  Don't forget to get some GunCon2's and an old PS2 for some excellent lightgun action, and hack your consoles for RGB output wherever possible. :)

I have a 36" CRT TV in my basement that I've had for ~15 years. It's about 200 lbs and a beast to move.

hahaha!
I have 32" JVC CRT.
I thought that was a monster until I saw the 36" ones lined up at the thrift stores.

Mine has component in & the picture is really amazing when being driven by a PC so i've kept it.

my uncle had a beast 36" ish Panasonic CRT tv. some kind of "home theater" edition branded model. GREAT picture, near flat tube...LITERALLY took both of us to lift. ...and I moved it more times than I cared to count.  :-\

Thank god for LED LCD TV's. I can easily lift my 50" LCD with the tips of my fingers one handed, something 10 years ago would be nearly impossible.

I bought a Sony 40XBR800 off craigslist a couple of years ago for $50. That's a 40" flatscreen CRT. 325 pounds. I moved it once, and the next time I moved, that thing got sold. Great picture despite some geometry issues, but WAY too unwieldy. Had DVI in the back, was capable of 1080i widescreen, and I thought I could maybe force 1440i out of it, but no dice. Internal scaler was crap. I wish I still had it to play around with, but meh.

@csnow

Hello,

I know your post about the RCA mm36100 is a few years old now but if you still have it (and its working) would you be willing to sell it?

I purchased that TV/monitor brand new back in 1999 and reluctantly sold it to a friend when I joined the Navy in 2004. I've always wanted to get that RCA back in my setup. Unfortunately the friend I sold it to donated it a few years ago because it took up to much space and I was not available to retrieve it from him. I have a Sony KD-30XS955 I could trade or I can pay cash. Please let me know either way.

 Thanks for your time

 Jarid
