Title: Confused: rasp PI 2 and mane?
Post by: j1345 on April 06, 2015, 05:40:57 am: I've been readin about pi2 for the last few days now. The more articles and posts I read the more confused I get. some say Pi2 can not run mame in all its glory so it's trash and other say it runs mame great. The youtube videos show a lot of mame games running very smooth including even play station games. :dizzy:

Why are the opinions so greatly divided? Do I need to just blow $40 and see for myself? Lol

If you want the Pi to run everything then you will be unhappy with the result. Some people do not understand the fun of running Mame on a smaller scale. Sure you can always run many more games on a 0$ old PC cast off but that is not the point. Look at how well the Pi replaces a 60 in 1 or just consider it a fun experiment.

Ahhhh...ok. So the Rasp Pi2 is more a novelty thing then a solution for a first build cabinet. I'll stick with plan B and just take the LCD off my laptop and mount it to the inside of the cabinet.

I thought the Rasp Pi2 was my solution to play my old favorites from Pac man -->Street fighter...

Especially on a smallish laptop screen.

The RPI is not a novelty.
The millions of units it sold plus the handful of dedicated distros for it
Prove otherwise.
One just needs to check out the gaming section of the RPI forums.
However, much like an old free PC it has limitations.
Its only $35

I'm building a dedicated vertical 4 way bartop.
RPI is perfect for this set up.
I'm also planing on a classic one player horizontal bar top.
Again RPI is perfect.

If I were to build a 4 player dedicated with 2 or 3 buttons each I believe RPI may even have this covered but not sure as I haven't tried to play the d&d games on it yet.

But for a fighting cab you'll have to look at final burn alpha to see if the games you want to play work.
I'd say probably not.
I don't play the fighters.
I know mk1 won't play very well even on the rpi2.
I know some of the neogeo games do play fine as far as I can tell when I was testing things using Mame .94.

You *could* hammer a nail with a socket wrench, but it would suck for that. It's meant for a specific task. The Pi is not that different. There are many tasks that it is absolutely perfect for. In another thread it was mentioned that the Pi would be a great as a dedicated PCB replacement for tons of arcade machines.

All his machines are Pi's with controls wired to the GPIO.
