Title: Info on building a CNC
Post by: Slippyblade on April 03, 2015, 10:08:35 pm
I'm on a fact finding mission about building a large bed CNC.  2'x4' at the very least.  I'm not even sure where to start looking for info/plans/kits/etc.  I'd love some pointers or links to good sites and reputable dealers.

Thanks in advance

If you have metalworking skills I'd suggest Mechmate.com the finished product from their plans is very industrial in quality and there is a fairly active forum of people with helpful experience. The plans used to be free and they've started charging for them which is a bummer, I don't think there was any license when I got mine that said no sharing, since they were free at the time anyway. If it looks like a machine you are interested in I'd probably be willing to hunt down the PDF plans.

I've lusted after the Joe's 4x4 with the cast parts and rack and pinion options, and also the Mechmate but with the advent of Linear rail extrusions I think my next build will most likely be an OX CNC.

That looks pretty nice but is seems you are limited to a 2x4 machine if I am reading things correctly.

From most of what I'm finding it seems I might be best served by building a desktop version fast and dirty and using it to machine the parts for the larger one.
