I was laughing with my wife about the sounds my MAME cab sometimes makes during gameplay so I wondered what some of your favorite in game sounds might be.
Things like "Shell Shock," and "Toasty," are iconic, but the one that has us cracking up is in Mystic Warriors when Brad is abducted by SKULL at the beginning and our hero yells "BRAD! !!!" Freaking hilarious!
-
the 'bong' sound sound when you put credits into atari games like paperboy :)
the 'chink' sound when you throw a knife in double dragon and it hits a wall :D
and finally, the sexy, satisfying sound of kicking someone in the face in kung fu master ;D
(what?)
-
Death of pac man
-
The pew-pew from Asteroids is my fav.
But I also like the Robotron sound effect for gaining a life, especially if you time it right when the wave changes, the sound effect plays an "extended" version as the psychedelic warp screen happens. It's so satisfying.
-
A few more I like...
Scorpion in Centipede
"Rise from your grave"
The dude in Donpachi
"Warrior need food badly"
-
Man, there are so many game sounds I love.
I love all the sounds of Road blasters
Gyruss has the greatest sounds. I especially love the sound that plays after the game. It starts kinda low and bassie and then gets higher and more shrill. One of these days I gotta make it my text alert tone.
I have also always loved the sounds and speech in berserk and gauntlet.
Sometimes I just enjoy having my arcade can on with a game that has audible attract mode and I just go about my business doing other things. My wife hates when I do that.
-
Extra man in Centipede.
Williams power on.
All the sounds in Pole Position.
Moon Patrol BGM.
Extra city chime in Missile Command
Explosion music and sound in Star Wars.
-
Defender sounds (all of them)
Rudy from Funhouse
-
Is this arcade limited? Because my favorite is the sound when you jump on a croc in the first donkey Kong country. It makes me laugh.
-
The free ship sound in Stargate just as you finish a wave. The greatest arcade sound ever!
-
Vigos favorite sound effects:
WaooWaoo!
PewPew!
ShuvadaShuvada!
Dong!
BeepBeep!
Youuuip!
$%!#?
WakaWaka
Weeeeeeeeeeooh!
Dekekekeke!
Blip Blip BAM!
Screeeeeeeeeeeee!
AIAAIAIAIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Great thread.
Space Invaders progressively faster "thump thump" sound effect. What makes it so cool is that it's in tune with the movement of the aliens
Tapper sounds effect, great overall package
Asteroid's fire sound effect
the Q-Bert "swearing" and the knocker sound effect
Ok, not arcade game but the knocker going off in a pinball when winning a game is pretty sweet
For the home
Impossible Mission intro speech was pretty fantastic
Is there a "best tunes" thread? I don't know if the little tunes fit in but if they do, you can add:
the cute tunes in Frogger
the "how high can you try" in DK
Spy Hunter classic tune
Time Pilot tune at the start of the level
Gyruss' awesome music
-
This is tough!
It's not 'in game' necessarily and I'm not much of a pins guy so I never got the pleasure of hearing it nearly enough, but the old match-knocker slamming at the pinball machine is music to my ears. There's something really, really satisfying about the DK - Needley NEE nee too.
Of course, all the gauntlet voices. I love the SF2 credit/start sounds (usually my text notifications!) but the two end-all-be-alls for me in two different X-Men games for some reason...
Colossus - RRAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH (we all knew one kid that would just plop tokens into the machine simply to spam that yell!)
and
Wolverine - BERSERKER BARRAGE
And not arcade, but the ka-CHING-pssshhh of Duck Hunt and Hogan's Alley on the NES is forever etched in my brain.
-
We had a pin in my local burger joint growing up Eight Ball Action maybe? And it would always say, "quit talking and start chalking" loved that growing up. Same place had Gladiator and Ikari Warriors so the ambiance of your afternoon meal would include gems like
"AGATON FIGHT"
"RACK EM UP"
"duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh didda duh"

Hands down the one I strive for, the one that makes me grin ear to ear and pump my fist in the air, is when you rack up a 20M+ Bonus on TAF and Gomez howls, "Who says you can't take it with you!?"

Never heard that one... Then again, I suck at pins. Gonna have to try and get it this year at Zapcon.

You realize this was an accident? The speedup effect was unintentional. I read an interview with the creator of the game and he mentioned that the original hardware simply had an incredibly hard time rendering that many sprites all at once and it bogged the entire system. As you removed the aliens it lowered the sprite count and the entire system sped up. Unintentional, but folks loved it, so they kept it when they finalized the hardware.

The diamond in Mr. Do!
The Challenging Stage Bonus in Galaga

Every time I play Xmvssf or something with Wolverine in it, all I ever hear is "Potato Claw" and "Racist Barrage". :laugh2:
Favorite sounds?
Robotron level change.
Afterburner missile lock-on.
Road Blasters Rally 5 (and every 3rd stage after that) end music.
-
the little "how high can you get?" jiggle before a game of DK.
-
I like the music that plays in between the levels of Robotron a lot
-

OMG, I was just about to post the same thing! :)
The sound effect when putting a coin in Pac-Man is also a fav.
-
I like the Space Invaders firing sound effect - brings back arcade memories for sure.
Asteroids sound as well - the jaws like one.
-
Big money! Big prizes, I love it!
-
I laugh out loud every time a 2nd player joins in on a game of Bust-a-move.
I think the Dinosaur guy is yelling come back but I really have no idea.
-
Big money! Big prizes, I love it!
Good luck! ...You'll need it!

You realize this was an accident? The speedup effect was unintentional.
Cute story, please stop believing it.
-
My favorite sound bite in the Addams Family pinball:
"Why, thank you, Thing!"
-
Boomshakalaka!

The sound in galaga when the bugs come at ya.
Which by the way has apparently made it into the crane game at one of the local pizzeria's.
So wrong.
-
Dropping a coin into Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
When MJ screams at the bad guy in the cuts scenes in moonwalker
One of the D&D games, "sticks to snakes!"
-
The sound when you get a perfect score on a galaga bonus stage. That and sinistars "Beward, I live!"
-
The Killer Instict boot sound on full volume!!
To be serious, the Elvira pinball tilt sound :applaud:
-
I normally prefer the "golden age" games but the boss explosions in DoDonPachi are my favorite arcade sounds of all time.
-
The free ship sound in Defender!
-
Winning.
