So i found the barrel of kong while surfing the net,i thought it was great, and in the right cisrcunstances,it can be cheap to build. Anyway, as always my buget aint that great so i got to keep costs lows. I found the barrel at a local garden shop, it does not look that great, but hey, its a wooden barrel.

So to start thing up, i paid 65 dlls, so tomorrow ima buy some sand paper and start the hard job....
-
There's a human being inside that barrel. I hope you are aware of that. It's considered rude stealing the home from a human being making an arcade out of it. :lol
-
He's even got a red hat like Mario. If that kid comes out with full 'stache I'm leaving.
-
Yeah thats my son, he couldnt resist to take a picture as the little fella "El chavo del 8" mexican cartoon very popular here at the border...

And today i went with a carpenter friend, so he can help me with his sander machine, as tthe wood in the barrel its all burned up, i think a nice sanding will take care of it. And in the afternoon i found an old whisky factory, where they got tons and tons of barrel in better shape for 65 dlls, so for my next projet i know where to go. Ill post more pictures tomorrow.
-
so today i made some progress, i sanded the barrel and removedd most of the burned from the sun wich made a crusty layer on the outside of the wood, so after the sanding it look alot better, not in the picture , but it does.

And i started to build the monitor, controlers holder out of 3/4 plywood. I know its not the best job in the world, as i do not own any fancy tools or a cnc machine, but when you love this hobby, you build with the heart... :)

I ordered some joysticks wich use leaf switches and look nice, plus they are very cheap, hope they work fine.too bad the will be here until wensday... anyway, in the mean time its time to clean more the barrel, maybe start painting and drealing the holes for the buttons...

Please please please put the dk logo in the side. The one thing all the barrel of Kong's have in common is NOT having it.

Im not sure about this one in particular, but im planing to make another one, so maybe the next build....

Probably because the idea for it is rooted in the arcade version, and that barrel is from the console version. If I were making a Barrel of Kong (and trust me, I NEVER will), I wouldn't use any console assets, either.
-
If I were making a barrel of kong, and I'm not, I would sacrifice screen size as necessary to eliminate cp overhang which destroys the lines of the barrel.

I thought about it to, but it will have to be a 13in or smaller screen size, and i wont look so good, i think cp overhang its not that bad....

Or retractable CP's.

Now thats an idea.

Nah.... The overhang looks good. It would look better if you could match the wood with like weathered wood to keep the look symmetrical however.
I like the barrel of Kong idea. Modern take on a cocktail cab.

I would modify the sides of the CP walls to look more similar to a midway profile. I feel the cutaway would make it more aesthetically pleasing from side view profile.

small update, as im not a big story teller, nor do i have fancy tools, all i can say, today i sanded the barrel a little more, applied paint , painted te rings as well and i painted the control panel as well, all hand made, wich in my taste, makes the barrel look more original. I have not received my joysticks, damn mail will take 2 weeks to deliver, the stupid post service in mexico sucks, in the mean time im gonna print the artwork sometime tomorrow and going to buy the electronics. hope it gets nicer as the days go by.

Looks good. I'm digging the barrel color.
-
Finally found more info on those joysticks. the joysticks are made by Asahi Seiko, the same company that made the first gen coin doors for nintendo cabinets. the model is AJS-II-L and comes with platinum plated leaf connectors and a plastic dust cover that goes over the leafs.
From what i gather, these sticks are extremely popular in Latin America but i still haven't found any place that sells them in the US or Europe.
-
Very cool, the color looks very good I think.

Did the vendor ship these to you directly or did you have someone else or some kind of shipping service ship these to you? Now I really want one of these. Might be time to have a bunch of these shipped over to the states.
-
The seller i got from ,looks to be a reseller, he did ship the controllers to me directly, but used the mexican post service, when i went to the post office to get the controllers, they told me they have a faster service but twice the priceservice, wich still afordable, so i spoke with them about shipping the things faster to me next time. They got some sort of pc to jamma adapter that goes into the paralel port, but works just fine using joytokey .......
-
so i have to put the barrel build aside as a customer ordered 7 cabs so im gonna post all the news about that in here as well, as he is going to buy the barrel from me too. so today i started cutting the pacman cabaret size sides, and started the ms pacman cocktail too, as well as small portable jukebox.

more pics of today works
