Right now, It will most likely be Linux, if it is, what would the best distro be to just have Xmame on? I do not want anything bloated.. Right now the harddrive is 2GB, it will be upgraded when the cabinet is done.
Or should I go with *BSD?
Update: 'Linux From Scratch' looks interesting, I will check it out when we get to that part of our project.

QNX, nah just kidding. I personally wouldn't use Linux for a Mame box unless I wanted it to be "up" 24/7.

I wouldn't recommend linux, only because there isn't as good of a choice for frontends. But if you're still willing to use Linux, maybe you should look into AdvanceCD(if you're worried about space). It's basically a cd you burn that is bootable, and boots up into a frontend, and what I think is AdvanceMAME. The Linux and mame part of the cd is only 16mb. Maybe you could burn one of those cd's, and just copy all the files onto your hardrive. It's probably the smallest distro you're going to get that can run MAME
It's really easy to burn. I was able to get a fully working CD, with a bunch of roms on it in a pretty short amount of time.
I wasn't really able to explain it well, go to http://advancemame.sourceforge.net/cd-readme.html and read up on it.
