Well, I got everything together and absolutely love my MAME (and my control panel, actually). The thing is, I'm using the Mag-Stik Plus and it just isn't doing it for me. I really love being able to switch between 4/8 ways, but the corners are so tight and I'm always banging the diagonals. If I add a dedicated 4 way joystick now (and change the other 2 players to 8 ways) it'll make my control panel art look pretty piss poor, so are there any solutions here? If I need to drill out the art I definitely will, but are there any other joysticks that work well for universal play? :dunno
Thanks guys!

Make sure your shafts are sitting in there right. Take them out and put them back in again. I had a little problem at first and i did that and now they work excellent. You shouldn't be hitting the diagonals if they are in right. I love mine.
Open your panel up and make sure the switch is turning all the way when you pull up and twist as well
Another option I thought of before getting the Mag Plus was cutting out the bottom of my drawer and hinging it back on so whenever I wanted to switch 4/8 way with my Estik I could just twist a lever that would swing open the bottom so I could quickly reach in an turn the restrictors and swing the bottom closed again
