Title: Ultimate iPac - 7 button layout - Mapping quick question
Post by: darryldale on March 15, 2015, 05:21:44 pm
OK, so I just picked up a pedestal that a guy custom built with 4 players and a trackball using an iPac Ultimate I/O.

He's got the trackball wired separately and doesn't go through the iPac. The iPac is configured with 4 players.

Silly question. He's wired 7 buttons for player 1 and player 2. Laid out in two rows of three with the 7th button underneath the two rows and offset a bit to the left. What is the standard switch settings. I'm assuming:

Top Row from left to right = SW1 / SW2 / SW3
Bottom Row from left to right = SW4 / SW5 / SW6
7th button = SW7

Is typical for a 6 button setup or is it:

Top Row from left to right = SW4 / SW5 / SW6
Bottom Row from left to right = SW1 / SW2 / SW3

7 button layout

xxxx
-xxx

or

-xxx
xxxx

Mame uses config files where you can change the input for a button in each game. I guess the correct way would be to wire each button separately and use the config files to have neo geo games use the 4 button row, and everything else 6 buttons or less use the 2 rows of 3 buttons inline. Not sure if CFG Magician app still works with the latest mame.?

The more I think about it, the more I will probably just stick to a 4 button layout in my build. Street Fighter is cool, but I can't even play anything well that has too many buttons. I don't know.

Your first example is how I intended to set it up. Ended up using both button 7s as mouse buttons anyway, so it didn't matter much.

Changing setups in games takes 10 seconds anyway, it's never a big deal no matter how you want it to go.

I would map them like this:

 123
 456
7

That should take care of most games, including all fighting games using the street fighter layout (top row will be punches, bottom will be kicks).

Then I'd use a Ctrlr file (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Ctrlr_file) to change the layout for all NeoGeo games in one go, so you can use the bottom row (7,4,5,6) for them.

Here is a post where I explained the process for an 8 button layout: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,138781.msg1434079.html#msg1434079 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,138781.msg1434079.html#msg1434079)

Excellent. Thanks for the tips. I actually did go ahead and map them as you suggested as that seemed like the most logical approach.
