Now, this is a great idea. Maybe consider something similar for your next build?

I don't know -- as many machines as I 've seen with the coin doors busted open putting the clear plexi so people can see how many quarters are in there seems to be inviting problems :dunno (even if it is for charity there are those out there that wouldn't be deterred by that fact) Hopefully it is in a secure location that has security patrols. Also need to include some sort of drop chute other than the quarter slot for those donating without wanting to play.

I dont think petty theft is as big of an issue in Sweden. There is a slot in the front for what I assume would be for paper money and or coins.

YOu're right on both counts -- didn't see the slot in the plexi even with the big arrow pointing directly to it :dizzy: - Guess I should drink the coffee before posting !!

It's in an airport. If your hair pin looks like a weapon, they know about it. And honestly, it's no different than any ordinary clear plexiglass donation box you see at various locations. It would be much easier to rob a water fountain, but most people don't do it. Not worth the risk when your bail would be more than you were stealing. Lol
I think this is a very cool idea! I would have included a bill validator. People who donate bills should get a play too! :p

Maybe American airports, when I left the US to go to Taiwan, it was a nightmare. When I flew back from Taiwan it was not a hassle at all, quite pleasant actually.
I don't think a DBV would work, it would have to accept any paper as a credit like the coin mechs accept any coin as a credit. The coins dropping in just hit the lever to insert coins its not set for any particular denomination , type, or value ; much easier to do with coins than paper. I guess if all you had was foreign paper currency , you could just drop a krone in and play (worth about 12 cents USD).

Re: bill validator
I don't think there is an international DBV. :dunno
Just think of the money hoard. They could hold the coin until it traded at profitable exchange rate.
*derp*

I know there are programmable multi-coin validators. They work based on diameter, thickness, and size. Maybe there is a paper currency version? Regardless, it's for charity so any donation is worthy in my opinion. I just thought a paper currency acceptor would give it even more of an arcade feel.
Video posted was cool. :)

I kinda liked the design of these cabs also. Notice that it's just the side panels that differs between them.

Not to old guys like most of us.

Those are a pretty good idea

Curious...what do people think would be the legality issues with doing something like this in the states? Think any of the copyright holders would agree to machines being built like this?

As long as they're equipped with original PCB's I really don't see how this could be a legal issue at all.

Of course you would still need to pay the license and registration fee for each machine to the state so the first several hundred dollars collected would go to that.

Oh sure, I can hear the sirens the from here.... (rolls eyes until only white shows and everyone things I've just gone blind)
Let's see, licensing fee for a non profit and amount owed in taxes from non profit to the state for all donations is... wait let me carry the one... and it's a big fat nothing.
Oh, and as for copyright holders - just stick one of those "illegal" 60-n-1 boards in it since the copyright holders are doing such a great job of stopping the sale of those.
I mean my god, is the horse dead enough already?

haha, i've had like half a dozen friends show me this in two days. i was wondering if this would make it on here before the weekend or i'd just post it myself.

Those look like LCD panels so probably not original PCB's.
Think it's a cool idea.

Just wondering why you think you cant hook an original PCB up to an LCD?
-
Pretty sure it is those 60-in-1 boards (based on VGA output and the games).
So they are abusing both copyright (original manufactor) and MAME usage policy. And I'm pretty sure they don't pay the license fee to the Swedish government (Lotteriinspektionen) having these machines in public. But hey, it is still a good idea in my book that hopefully will be for the better for people that needs help in some way

By the way, I have been working at that airport - and as long as you have (same parts of) the staff monitored you will keep the theft down...

Ya don't say? Well I'm sure the proper authorities are en route. Just give it a bit more time *snicker*

I don't think you can't.
I just think the company building these wouldn't.
