Title: Basics of Making your own control panel overlays. Material, printing, cutting
Post by: fastline1 on March 07, 2015, 01:57:38 pm
Hello, I am not really building arcade controls but similar panels and found this group to be at least familiar with the process.  I am designing some rather basic controls that will require about a 2x3" overlay.  No membrane buttons, not cutouts, just basic pcb mount buttons under the overlay.  These will be used outdoors but usually not in direct sunlight.  I primarily need the overlay to protect an LCD screen and seal the enclosure from moisture.

I was hoping to be able to use a commercial vinyl printer/cutter for this but but sure if that can work?  Can someone explain the basics?  I am familiar with commercial printers working from clear materials and then cutting with a drag knife typical of a plotter or vinyl cutter but I assume the thicker materials won't cut as easy?

Anyone here have direct experience or offer guidance where to seek some education on these processes?  I could probably just have them printed but I have other interests in a printer so it would be a great excuse to buy one.  I am not sure what a commercial company would do them for or even where to go.
