Title: King of Fighters '98 on Steam Playable in Low Resolutions
Post by: vicosku on February 27, 2015, 08:30:52 pm
Hey everyone.  I just picked up King of Fighters '98 on Steam since it's on sale today.  I was surprised to find out that I could use any of the resolutions made available on my system by CRT Emudriver and VMMaker.  Using 320x224 and turning off the soft filter makes this game look almost perfect, except for a slight issue that only be seen when scrolling.  I assume even this can be fixed as well.  It's quite a nice surprise to play a recent release with online capabilities at 240P!  I'll have to be on the lookout for other games like this.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but I enjoy this game a lot, and I just wanted to share my excitement to be able to play a near-arcade perfect set-up of it against other people since I never got to play it in the arcade in the '90s.  And it's all thanks to this project.  Hopefully some others will enjoy this information as well.

Are you using WinXP or Win7?

Windows 7.  Using super resolutions like 2560x224 just makes the image a thin column in this game, so I switched back to the regular resolutions.

Just in case, super resolutions can happily coexist with any other normal resolution you may need for games that don't support those.

Ah, thanks!  That's good to know.  I just switched to Windows 7 and have only begun messing with super resolutions.  I haven't fully absorbed the documentation and settled on a configuration yet.

I'll have to try it out on KOF 2002 UM and see if that works in low-res as well.

It does!  I picked it up today as well.  I didn't realize how different and how much better it was than the Neo Geo version, which I didn't care for.

Awesome, great to hear!

Yes, the character roster on these 2 games is insane, I love the Neo Geo KOF 98, but the UM editions are incredible updates to both games.
