Title: cheap sound effects w/out a computer?
Post by: SeanFu on December 22, 2003, 09:07:24 pm
Alright - it seems like I'm wasting my time trying to finish this cabinet: I had the control panel on the floor the other night and my three young kids were in heaven pretending to pilot their "space ship".  They were fighting over who got the next turn.

They have begged me repeatedly since then to play with the panel again.  Which gives me an idea:

Anyone know a cheap way I can add sound effects to a cp?  My kids would think it's the greatest toy ever.

Hm. Back in the early 90s, there was a keychain you could buy at places like Spencers that would make sounds when you hit a button. Perhaps hacking one of these?

Yeah just goto Toys R Us and find ANY toy that makes a noise by pushing a button.  Hack it apart and connect the wires from the microswitches to the leads in the toy.

hmmmmmm...

Are you sure you want to squeeze as many noise-button-toys into one box as possible, and make them simultaneously accessible by your kids?   :o

Maybe you should hide an "oops it's broken" switch in there so that every now and then you'll have to spend a week or two "fixing it" when it "breaks"....      ;D

That said, there were younger kids over this holiday, and they do seem to enjoy waggling the joysticks and buttons around far more than actually trying to play a game.

It's something about the "real" hardware I think...  The kids can tell the good stuff from the toys.

As far as the secret "broken" switch, currently we rely on the short life of batteries: we never seem to have enough replacements around...
