I forgot how good that one is.  Seems like all the Atari games of that era had great music and sound though.  Roadblasters comes to mind.

I loved Paperboy's music as a kid. The bassline sounded great on that cab:

Spy hunter was badass as well. I loved the solo at about 1:00 in.

The reason I went to so much trouble for the sound system in my cab:
(xonar sound card, 8" subwoofer in custom enclosure tuned to around 30hz, silk dome tweeters because I wasn't happy with the mylar ones)
I play the NAOMI arcade version on Makaron emulator.
PSYVARIAR2 ORIGINAL Sound track PLUS - 03. Weakboson-GorgeCity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZrKXcoHkKw#)

Music for newer games don't have the hardware limitations though.
Nobody is going to say "wow I can't believe this quality of music is coming out of my bluray based game system"

For the old school, I have to go with Streets of Rage (or anything by Yuzo Koshiro).
I couldn't believe that sound was coming out of my Genesis and it made the game that much sweeter.

For old school arcade, I have to go with Splash Wave from Outrun.

Exodus: Ultima III (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npOuYlxQj_E)

This is the Apple II version, but I am familiar (and fond of) of the Atari 8-bit sounds.  Dungeon music at 3:54 is weird and spooky.

Since we are not limited to arcades, my top two are Metroid Prime and Castlevania Symphony of the Night. I also agree that the mid to late 80's Atari games all had great soundtracks too

Picking a favorite soundtrack is like picking a favorite game.  It's a hard choice.  I love all Nobuo Uematsu soundtracks from the FF series pretty much and some others.  6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, Tactics.  Loved Chrono Trigger.  Xenoblade Chronicles has a helluva soundtrack, too.

I've been to 2 Distant World concerts because I love my FF music.

The Metroid Prime soundtracks were kinda weird...some of it was more like an atmospheric music or something...not sure how to describe it, but it worked and sounded so fantastic.  The Phazon Radiation themes were on my cab and Wii for the menu/frontend.

FF6 or FF7

I remember the first time hearing the FF7 soundtrack on my PC, using a REAL soundcard that did the Midi decoding the right way - the music was orchestral and beautiful...
