Title: Space Paranoids no longer on-line - has anyone attempted a standalone build?
Post by: jukingeo on February 15, 2015, 11:52:13 am
Hello All,

A short while back there was an on-line version of Space Paranoids released by Disney that worked through Windows / Unity.   I had a blast playing the game with my twin sons.   After a while we stopped playing the game, but wanted to return to playing it last night.   As it turned out, Disney pulled the plug on the website and Space Paranoids can no longer be played on-line.

I am curious if anyone might know where there is a down-loadable version of the game.  Going one step further, I am curious if anyone has built a working Space Paranoids cabinet.  In the very least, I am curious if there is a Mame version of the game.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank You,

Geo

I found this online : http://de.y8.com/games/Space_Paranoids (http://de.y8.com/games/Space_Paranoids)   It's a german website, but it should start automatically. The game seems to be downloadable, but you have to register.

There also is the RogueSynapse site (http://www.roguesynapse.com/games/space_paranoids.php (http://www.roguesynapse.com/games/space_paranoids.php)) where you can download the game, seems to be a different version though. They also are building a cab for it.

Gidday Mates,

I checked out this game at the german link above and it was pretty good however it froze on me. So I downloaded the game I think so I have space-paranoid.unity3d on my drive. I figured i would need the program to run it so I downloaded unity3D on to my computer (Big File 1.4gb)

Cant seem to get the game to run still, any suggestions ??

Thanks
Dash

I messed around with it, couldn't find a good stand alone unity player that was cab friendly.  Trick is finding one with command line options - at which I failed miserably.  Kinda gave up on it but would like to get it cab friendly at some point.

I didn't play it on a cab, just my laptop at work. But, it worked just fine.

Hmm, that sounds promising.  Did it work without any bugs?

I didn't notice any, but I only played it for a couple of minutes.

I played the RogueSynapse one on my cab and it works fine.  I also downloaded the version from the German site Space-paranoids.unity3d and just put the file on my desktop on the cab. Then you have to download the unity3d web player and install it.

It works as an add-on to your internet browser. Once that is done just open your Internet browser and drag the Space-paranoids.unity3d file from your desktop to the internet page and it will load

After each play round it freezes. It says to hit fire to start next round but nothing happens. You have to press your windows key on the keyboard then click with the mouse in the play area, then click fire and the next round will start. I like this one better than the RogueSynapse one. Works great with joystick to move around and mouse to aim the turret and click to fire

Ok, I recently played the Rogue Synapse version and it seems more like the game they played in the movie.   The only thing I find annoying is that 'blue ball' that seems to appear out of nowhere and doesn't show up on the enemies map.   It 'sneaks up' on you and kills you.  I don't remember seeing that in the movie game.   I wonder if it could be turned off as it is annoying.

I do agree with Dashingw as the Unity version is a bit nicer.   I have to go back into Windows and try downloading it.

Edit:   Ok, I have the Windows Unity version working now.   I just associated the downloaded Space Paranoids file with Firefox and boom!  I was in like Flynn (pun intended).  I just set Firefox to full screen and was good to go.

I will say that the Rogue Synapse one has an edge in terms of a cabinet install as it asks for a coin, which the Unity version does not.   Another thing is that the Unity version would only be suited for a stand alone cabinet with no other games because it doesn't use MAME.   I don't know if Mala could be instructed to launch Firefox instead of MAME in a cabinet scenario.

Another thing I found weird is when playing two players, you figure player one continues until he/she dies and then player 2 goes, but no once you clear a level the 2nd player takes over.   Now if the player 2 dies before the level is complete, it goes back to player one.   Player one completes the level again, Player 2 starts the level he/she died on ALL OVER again.   So there is a bit of a glitch when it comes to playing two players on the Unity version.    I have to see how the Rogue Synapse version handles 2 players.

All in all I still like the Unity version.   At least now I don't have to depend on a website as I downloaded it.   I think it might be worth it to put Space Paranoids in a Vigolix style cabinet.  Would be interested to see if the whole thing could be set up on the new Raspberry 2...if it could handle it.
